Explainer: 15 years of MGNREGA: From Crisis to Solutions

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has shown what it can achieve by putting down water conservation at its core.
Down To Earth's 14 reporters covered a staggering 16,000 km in 15 states across the country, hampered by restrictions posed by a pandemic, to gauge the impact of the world's largest public wage program in its 15th year of implementation. These were the first villages in the country where MNREGA was implemented 15 years ago.

Too sweeping and general. India has 600k villages. Highlighting the water conservation and management efforts of a couple of villages can at best be treated as worthwhile efforts others can follow. Beyond that, considering the amount of money spent on MNREGA, the results are disappointing. It is at best a scheme of dole ridden with corruption. There are better examples with a fraction of the money on water management.

I wonder about Nehrus huge 5year plans of building dams etc hoping that was the essence of progress. In those days we unfortunately did not pay attention to our past history of water management based on diferent landscapes in each village. Now these simple water management technique and permaculture have proved to be real solution for any landscape. Thanks to internet we all come to know the reward for efforts which guide all the ruralrolks.

👌🙏✊ Jai Bharat. People will work their way towards a better future, all that the government has to provide is little technical guidance, support and proper organization monitoring. Its a brilliant idea, but the implementation has a lot of scope for improvement in many ways and areas and also a few loop holes. Observed some people stopped their regular work bcos of this scheme where they idle their time and get paid, out of which a an amount goes to the officials. Thanks for the beautiful program. You are concerned about welfare of the people, then please also show the shortcomings and some suggestions to improve the system. 👌🙏✊

In my village seance 1972/78 dry. I see no any Rega working what can I do to do something about it. Tell the other side also sir its sounsing like magic to me comw to my village & plz show where is manrega & why Pani foundation & Nana patekar foundation have to come to do work if manrega was working

Mgnrega is big mess in my village in Madhya Pradesh. It give daily 190/- so no work works. Secretary at village, rojgaar-sahayak do not work..they clearly say they do Not work without corruption. All kind of politics applied to delay the work and do not document any work done in a the village. Thier clear intention to spoil the image of sarpanch who do not allow corruption. As a result after 3years only 5% work is done.

Recall as a child going to the river Chambal to play. So crowded with development but not a single plastic in sight as we consumed less _ one bar of soap or one bottle of shampoo in glass containers _ never plastic. Tetra pack, plastic came in when the West came in to set up their companies in India. Housewives preferred working and left the home front for money and we started living in squalor.
