I think what the Free Indicates under the HS Codes is that those goods are free to be imported in India meaning they are permitted to be imported in India not particularly meaning that they are exempt from Customs Duty etc.

Double check if it is marked as a gift. It it is, tell your seller to initiate a replacement while not making it as gift. . Custom duty increases exponentially is marked as gift It should generally cost you at most 50% of the original price+shipping price

So whoever you buy from internationally, request them to never mention it as gift and only for personal use That way tho the taxes are still massive. I just had to pay 2.5k for a 4k shipment as i used express shipping(UPS express) My tips would thus be - 1) request seller to ship package without labelling it as gift. 2) use cheap shipping services and never express services if possible. Wait times are much longer but custom duty needed to pay gets reduced

One of my friend imported a 4700 inr product with post office(economy shipping) and 1000 RS was charged While I used UPS express and got charged 2600(~70% of original) So if you use express shipping then probably you have to pay around 500$. Can be less if you use cheap shipping by means of post(which is not always available and is very slow), but if express is used surely 500 or more My friend got the item in 1.5 months and I got it in just 6 days

Add 22℅ of your purchase price to it. For e. g. Purchase price is 100. Now add 22%. It's 122 and that is your CIF value. 42℅ of your CIF value will be your custom duty.

Don't trap for "Free" Greed. Secondly, don't believe unless you yourself has ordered something online from international seller or your close relative is sending from abroad. Track the shipment with tracking details. Lastly, wait and watch, because custom duty has to be collected by delivery agency like India post, dlf, fedex etc. Against a valid custom challan with duty details mentioned in it pointwise, at the time of delivery only. There is no system of advance duty deposit in the case of personal import. 😌
