Pokhara, Nepal - Another beautiful evening here by the lake. Initially, I came to experience the amusement park, but it did seem like functioning; maybe I was too early. But I ended up with an even better experience in a local restaurant and met this lovely couple and spent around half an hour with them chatting, talking, and getting introduced to a new local drink.

The drink u had is pronounced as Tongba not Tungba. Its made with fermented millet always served by soaking it with hot water. You have to wait 10-15 minutes before the millet is properly soaked only then u get to taste the actual taste. This drink can actually be very strong, the longer u ferment the stronger it gets, meaning u can actually get pretty drunk if u have like 2 or 3 servings.The reason u didn’t like the drink in that restaurant is because either they do not know how to prepare or they didn’t ferment long enough which is around 6months traditionally so there is no flavour at all.

Thongba is basically fermented millet, and best had in cold winter conditions as it helps in heating the body. They pour hot water on the fermented millet and then you sip it through the straw. It has a nice high as well. I am not sure if it's a Tibetan drink, but its had by the people in the Himalayan regions, mostly in bamboo containers. It is also referred to as 'Bamboo'. Do also try the Nepali distilled spirit called Raksi, which is made from either rice or wheat, and tastes a lot like sake. I like it. Nice of you explain the Azerbaijani type of Govt. I was watching an indian vlogger 'Destination Hopper' as he was in Baku, and Baku looked really nice, modern and very cool. Hope to visit one day. Enjoy your travels. I love momos too, the chicken, pork & beef/buff versions, especially with the spicy red homemadesauce.

Tomba, you need to let it soak in water while you are socialising and eating other foods. You will start tasting it stronger gradually. Stir it and you will get strong taste. You can drink it hot or cold.

You should try tumba in very typical tumba making places otherwise you will not get the exact taste of tumba. Typically kirati communities makes this drink and I am guessing they didn’t brew enough portion of fermented millet in your drink that’s why it’s taste weird.

Tomba is a traditional and cultural alcoholic drink of limbu and Sherpa ethnicity who are natives of eastern Nepal, it’s made from millet and fermented in natural yeast n stored for several months before using it, the longer it’s stored the stronger tomba gets. One can use hot or cold water, whatever one prefers

I haven’t seen that kind of Tongba 😂 they gave you only liquid of Tongba 🤷‍♀️ normally they fill the pot with Tongba made by (millets )and you put hot water in it and you leave for 5 minutes and you have to drink, again you put hot water again & again until you feel tasteless!! If it’s strong they put water again & they drink 🥤

Hey Davuud...i wish that the next time you visit Nepal....you come by land and visit my city, siddharthnagar...which is also the doorway to Lumbini for tourists crossing into Nepal from India...i live some 20 yards off of the immigrations office here at the border and as a local...i'd be happy to show you around...forgive me if i have only managed to annoy you with my comments...however if you do come and come by road...i live only 20 yards further up the road from the immigrations where you get your visa...its very likely we'll meet...and you can email me...or reply to my comment to notify....if you can manage to come back to nepal again, that is...(oh and I'm just about smart enough to get us out of trouble when i get us into one 😂😂)

It's tongba, not tumba. Aryan people can't pronounce native words and make them tumba, Tongba is a drink from eastern hill and himalaya used by Matwali (Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, Tamang) group of people. Tumba means Uncle ✌️
