When I was in, I qualified expert with pistol (1911A1 at the time), rifle (M16A1), and grenade (M203). Never failed to maintain my expert badges every time we qualified. Pretty proud of that.

@old Goat Yes, I learned “The Pig” inside and out. Had a love/hate relationship with it. The ones we had were probably Vietnam era issue and by the early ‘80s, they were in sad shape. I had to use 100-mph tape to keep the buttstock on. The Ma Duece....yep, when I went to Ft. Irwin. I fired a crap ton of .50 cal. At what that stuff cost out here in the world, I think I cost Uncle Sam several tens of thousand dollars. And I was in between ‘83 and ‘87.

I was a single man 50 cal gunner. I got punishment in jrtc so my section chief made me mount maintain did join and clean the 50 cal. The cadre scolded me for letting go that butterfly trigger to quickly but my section chief liked a quick trigger guy. The only time I used it in a real situation it was a car speeding through our checkpoints so I did 3 five second bursts from maby 60 yards away and it hit everything and the engine block. And when they checked for weapons and explosives nothing. This man was a regular citizens who had two girls in the backseat one of them had to be 13 maybe the other was the wife I don't know but women have to be in the backseat. It hurt my soul

My dad passed away at the age of 83 years young. He served in the Korean War. I want to put his infantry badges in a display case. Do one on how to do this and what goes where. We lose hundreds of soldiers everyday..... To those who have died in combat and to those who have died period. Thank you so much for your lives !!!! You are not forgotten, many of us love you all. I'm in the same situation. Had one grandfather in WW2 and one in the Korean War. I've managed to get all of the badges that my family could find. I'm trying to get them put into display cases but I'm not even sure if I have them all. Neither one kept them organized or in great storage. For example, from the grandfather who served in WW2, I have two badges from the 123rd Infantry Regiment and one badge from the 22nd infantry regiment. Nobody in my family seems to know much of his exact history but I've tried to piece together what I could. I'm assuming he started in the 22nd Infantry Regiment as I know he was in Germany at one point which is where the 22nd was from what I could find doing research. And I'm guessing that once the Regiment was Inactivated, he was transferred to the 123rd. I'm not sure why there is two badges from one of the regiments but only one from the other. Does anyone have a possible explanation for this? Am I missing one?

A wooden box can be lined in the bottom with felt. Depth can be cut down and an appropriate sized picture frame mounted to the front. Pin medals in, hang on wall with 2x screws and string or wire. A great 1 day build after a visit to the opportunity shops.

I take a lot of pride in my Combat medical badge . When I first joined I never thought I would earn it . Expert field medical badge ,sure . But Combat Medic Badge was and still is a source of pride . I earned it in blood and guts .

As someone who served in 1983 I would LOVE to know how you received combat wreaths to ANY badge. As an Infantryman, and Air Assault qualified I would be HIGHLY interested in how you LEGITIMATELY obtained these in 1983. Sounds like someone here is a PX Ranger and not very bright to boot. The Panama invasion was not until late December of 89, and I know because I got my Jungle Expert there in 83. Without having made a serious typo on this post - you have lied my friend and been BUSTED by someone who was SERIOUS about collecting the badass badges. There was ZERO combat action in 1983. Even our failed attempt at rescuing the 52 hostages in Iran (why I joined and went Infantry) was 1980, and you would have had to be a member of Delta Force if you participated, and you would not be proud about ANY aspect of that epic failure. 1983 saw no combat action ANYWHERE! So feel free to share with us where you jumped into a combat scenario in 1983... this is not the forum to get away with the fake stories you tell your friends.

Jon W carrying a flame thrower was considered hazzardus duty and thus an extra 15 dollars a month according to my grandfather. 15 dollars might not seem a lot but in 1944. We went to see saving private Ryan. He had never seen the beach aspect of D Day as he parachuted in to France. Went the guy carrying the flame thrower blew up he was startled and when they cleared out the pill box with a flame thrower we said that is how it is done. He also carried a Thompson submachine gun into battle. Said at first he could not hit the broadside of a barn with it but he got really accurate shooting short bursts. MY grandfather's brother scaled point du hock with the 75th rangers now be had some great stories. In my 13 years time on service my grandfather wrote me a letter every week. He did not know how to usef a computer so at mail call I always got a letter every week. I have all 673 of the.

Very interesting Chris. I was 6 years in the Australian Army Reserve and we didn't have nearly the number of badges that the US Army guys had. Also we had far fewer Enlisted ranks. For example a Corporal is regarded as a Junior NCO and is rated as an E-5, which is a Sergeant in the US Army. A Sergeant in the Australian Army was regarded as a Senior NCO and is rated as an E-6, which is equivalent to US Army Staff Sgt. In Australia, the rank of Staff Sergeant is being phased out. It was an E-7 equivalent to US Army Sergeant 1st Class. The Australian Warrant Officer Ranks (WO-2 and WO-1) are regarded as Enlisted Ranks and are equivalent to Sergeant Major (E-8) and Command Sergeant Major (E-9) respectively. Actually the term "enlisted rank" is not used in the Australian Army. These categories are known by the term "Other Ranks". So a Sergeant is actually an OR-6, not an E-6. I have lived in the USA for 22 years and am fascinated by the comparison of the US force rank structure with the one I am more familiar with. Combat Action Badge and Drivers Badge is what I have from my tour 2009-2011 in Afghanistan. CAB not fun to get, but it gives me the most pride. Grandfather got Combat Infantryman Badge in WWII. It was his favorite as well. We are a wreath wearing family!

He failed to explain that in order to be awarded the combat infantryman badge that soldier or unit must have closed with and destroyed the enemy. We dont get awarded for just being shot at like the other MOSs we only get awarded for fighting back.

CORRECTION ON SOME WORDING: In the video i said the CIB and EIB can only be worn by Colonel and below when i should have said it can only be earned by colonel or below as a general can wear one if they earned it when they were a CPT or what ever but cant earn one if they are a general. Second deployment was to Italy. After my eight years, I went into the Aerospace and had a long career in the Space program.

Glad to know Brother! Remember you are in the less than 1 percent of the US population. Besides being an Infantryman in the Army and had to endure the famous Airborne School at Ft. Benning. You are an elite fighting man along side of our other Brothers who are Rangers and SF guys along with the other services elite units like SEALs, CCT, Para Rescue, and Recon guys etc. I respect them because they went through the same school to get Airborne wings like we did. As a Brother Paratrooper you did beyond what we are expected and required to do with our bodies, mind, and soul to be the best the U.S. Military can produce by your own initiative and free will to be an Airborne Warrior made out of flesh, blood, soul, and mind. Yes, there are many 'badges'. My grandson has his 'wings' now. He's an AH-64/Blackhawk helo mechanic. Just graduated from AIT at Ft. Eustis, VA.

I was army rotc in high school. Which I completely understand there is no comparison to what you did for me and I hole heartly thank for your service. We did recive a number of ribbons and metals what we excelled at. I’m in Kentucky so a lot of where we did our test per say was at Fort Knox. I remember the one award I was extremely proud of was in marksmanship with a rife with the flip iron peep sites. Now what we did was 10 shots prone at 100 meter then 10 in prone at 200 meters. I’m sure we was scored completely different from how they scored active real soldiers but I scored expert all four years of high school. So being a kid at that time with recruiters coming to class once a month I couldn’t wait to show him my award my freshman year and that gentleman never forgot me and how I walked up to him before class chest all puffed out like I was a big dog. His first visit my jounier year he pulled me aside and asked if I would be interested in taking the asvab test just for fun. I’m 40 so this was long time ago I have no idea what my score was I just remember him acting like he had never had anyone my age score that high and just continued completing me, called my parents several times. By the last few months before summer break he had me so big headed I was really to sign at 17 and my parents was on board as well. Now for the kicker.... my mom took me for just a yearly eye examination. Never wore glasses always 20/20. One thing that they checked this visit they hadn’t done before was for colorblindness. Which was found I was mildly colorblind. Mainly just some shades. But after the recruiter was told about it talking to my parents he was like a ninja and I never heard anything from him again. Can you shed some light on this for me I’ve wondered for years why and never seemed to get a clear understanding answer

Jump Wings and the CAB can be awarded to members of other services if they meet the requirements, the CAB also means that the service member was engaged in combat while attached to an Army unit, it's pretty rare for other services to get it but I'm in the Air Force and have met a total of 3 Airmen in my 4 years with it, 2 of them were Security Forces airmen amd one was a Civil Engineer.

I was with Helo assault companies from 92-96 in the USMC. We were constantly trying to get the air assault badge authorized (we could go to Army jump school for jump wings) but alas, the Commandant wouldn't authorize it. I personally became a HRST (Helicopter Rope Suspension Technique) Master and rigged the birds for fast roping and rappelling. Damn I wanted that badge.

I was 11H MOS and went to Fort Benning over 40 years ago for basic and AIT. I kept my badges and have the Expert qualification badge for rifle, pistol, grenade and missle (TOW). I had the 4 bars hanging from the expert badge and I see now you're only supposed to have a max of 3 per badge. I don't remember if that was the case then, but I kept them all on as I remember.

When I served with General Mills, I was deployed to Kellogg's island. After two tours I was awarded the silver spoon with oat clusters. I’m most proud of my crewman wings, or enlisted aviation wings. You earn those by being or have been qualified in an MOS in the 15 series. A lot of hard work, 8 months long, got me that badge.

I was in Aviation, and fellow Aviation soldiers would lose their minds when I came around. Remember that in Aviation, it's extremely difficult to have your command pay for you to go to these schools. I contractually obligated my unit to send me to Airborne, and Air Assault on my second contract. I refused to reenlist without them being in, and sure enough, within 8 months of reenlisting I had my jump wings and Air Assault badge. Combined with Aviation Wings, CAB, and Pathfinder Torch (which I was lucky enough to get a slot for because I was on a TTCS team), I had a 5 stack. Even outside of Aviation, that wasn't all too common. I would go to WLC, or TERPS School, or ALC, or wherever else, and I always just felt a sense of immediate respect from people. I don't mean that in an arrogant way, because I'm one of the most laid back people on Earth, and I don't have a cocky bone in my body, but it just felt good to be able to have that sense of pride when I saw other looking and saying things like "holy shit, that stack" or other things. I'll never forget that feeling.

If you already have the mechanics badge...then you should also have the driver badge as well. Mechanics have to have a military drivers license and drive the vehicles

Since your video, the Army has created a few new badges. They have this “space/satellite” badge I don’t know much about. They have Instructor badges now to go along with the 8 SQI in 3 levels (Basic, Senior and Master) And they also now have a Master Gunner Badge as well.🐼💯

I joined the Army in 1/75 after Nam a guy could could only get a medal at the pawn shop. I earned my Aviation wings you needed to have logged 25 flight hours. working on Chinooks and field problems and reforger 76 got me the wings. And I didn't have to go to the pawn shop.

As a former Force Recon Marine, we were only authorized to were two badges at a time, ( other than marksmanship qualification badges) parachutist badge (basic or Navy Marine Corps gold wings) and Scuba diver’s badge or combatant diver’s badge. Most recon marines have multiple qualifications,.. ie pathfinder, Military Free Fall, Jump Master, Ranger school, Special Forces Q course,... etc. Now I believe there’s a Raider badge for MARSOC marines. The Marine Corps has always been a bit schizophrenic about badges, patches and labels, ( it took over 70 years to officially designate a Special Operations Force), so to say that the Entire Marine Corps is a special operations force serves no real purpose in today’s world.

You can purchase all kinds of badges and awards and whatnot at the PX, so if you go over the top (such as building a little ladder of bars under your Marksmanship badge, like Rifle, Pistol, Grenade etc.), you are called a PX Commando. Soldiers typically just put one qualification bar on their badge.

I gotta Drivers badge. I’m pretty proud of that badge because I got it while responding to Hurricane Sandy. I got the worst truck and It kept breaking down. Every piece of mechanical knowledge I have , I learned from fixing that truck.

I'd add that the US army has a few other badges & skill awards not listed in the video. air crews & pilots wear wings, the pathfinder badge was common in my era(90s). The eod & diver badges were rare but some wore them too. a new bad %&* SOF diver badge came out about ten years ago. The US army had "recondo" & jungle expert badges too but both were phased out. Green Hell jungle school was in Panama for many years.

In the Army Signal Corps there is a badge awarded by the Airforce to Satellite Controllers. The story goes that Controllers were primarily AF, the Army was quickly growing its usage of Satcom and needed more controllers than the AF could field. The AF decided to allow Soldiers into the course, but were believed they couldn't pass it. All the soldiers passed (they were 31S, now 25S, literally the smartest and brightest MOS the Army has) with high scores. The AF was impressed and awarded them the badge they normally give Airmen for passing. AF doesn't have a subdued badge since they didn't wear badges on BDUs (the old camo uniform prior to the late 90s). So the soldiers darkened them so they could wear it on the BDU's. Airforce got a little ticked because it was seen as defiling the award. Nowadays the Army primarily handles the course and the controllers are pretty much all soldiers. And as far as I can remember (since I got out 10 years ago), soldiers were still darknenign the award to wear on ACUs.

I qualified on the 16 back in 1969 with a sharpshooter badge. I might have gotten expert if my rifle hadn't jammed while I was on the range and having to clear it while targets were going up and down :( I didn't have to qualify on the M-14 but did have to fire familiarization and preferred it to my jam-o-matic M-16, despite the harder recoil.

I barely qualified on the rifle range during basic with Marksman but later upgraded to a Sharpshooter about 6 months later. But after my ETS, my DD Form 214 states Marksman . I’m branded for life

CIB is sometimes referred to as a Free IB. Sometimes its earned byproxy, simply by being in a combat zone but not actual combat.

My grandfather had the marksman rifle badge that's the only badge I have ever seen of his. He was in the Korean war. I got it today thanks for the tips about it. He was good at shooting his rifle so I think he was in a higher rank but he isn't here to ask since 2011 and I wasn't old enough to know then.

Served in Vietnam as a 13E20, went out as an RTO with our Battery’s FO, Quang Tri Province, 1970. No CIB for Red Legs, did air assaults but no Award, Served as Artillery Officer 1980s and 90s, before the combat action badge. Other than a patch on my right shoulder nothing denotes various aspects of my service.

Never a medic, but The Expert Medical Badge hardest to earn. I earned the Expert Infantry Badge while in OCS. Also have the basic Airborne medal jump wings. We were scheduled to jump into Santo Domingo in 1965, but the airfield was secured so we landed. Good thing as our drop zone was then a vinyard with wires and stub poles.

Airborne, Air Assault, and I would have expert for rifle and pistol but as an Officer, we don't wear marksmanship badges. I also have the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge in silver (missed getting gold, but I think silver looks better on the ASUs anyways lol). Would love the opportunity to go to Pathfinder, but as an MP, chances are slim that they'd send me unless I get stationed at Benning and manage to walk on. Great work on the videos!

One badge i have and a lot of pride in was the German sharp shooting badge.It is a large over 3-4 inch wide with aa German Eagle and silver brad coming down. That and while at Ft Know all the e-1 would ask me what it as. Thanks for the video glad to see another vet putting out quality stuff.

In your shooting or marksmanship badges, you missed the three possible Distinguished badges. Bronze, Silver and Gold. You can earn those in EIC (Excellent In Competition) Imatches throughout the country. They reach as high as Gold in Rifle and Pistol. There is also an international Marksmanship badge. How to wear and how to get you need to read up on. These badges are worn instead of standard expert badges. If you can achieve it.

Forget to mention that other branches can attend jump and air assault. For air force most badges are dark blue but army badges are sewn on with black thread. So if you see an airman with blue jump wings they are most likely officers that went through air force academy jump school, and if its black then that airman went to army jump school.

I'm reminded after watching this of something I read about in Fredrick Forsythe's autobiography when he qualified as a pilot in the RAF and got his wings. He stated a pilot's wings are not something you can inherit, marry a pretty girl to get, or buy. You earn them and they are yours alone. I imagine the same can be said for all these badges listed here.

EFMB Expert Field Medical Badge and not easy to earn. There are many Medics who treated casualties under fire, but will never receive the CMB due to not being assigned to a combat arms unit. They will get a CAB. Know a lot of Soldiers who never received any medals or badges for their time in combat.

I earned the expert rifleman's and the expert handgrenade badge at Ft. Sill, Ok. Basic Training 1980. Later after returning from Babenhausen W. Germany. I earned the parachute badge at Ft. Beginning. While stationed at Ft. Bragg. I also earned the Canadian parachute badge. Those I consider the high water marks of my life. And hopefully I will as they say in the 82nd. "PUT MY KNEES IN THE BREEZE" once again.
