Thanks for explaining exactly what they are, I could never get my head around it as I also heard that Edinburgh was built over an older city, I get it now. I got the concept after doing street view on top of cowgate bridge and could see the lower level, thanks again

I could never understand the location and arrangement of the vaults, until I took a tour into that mysterious lair. An extensive labyrinth runs beneath South Bridge, with dark and hellish subterranean chambers concealed by the overbuild. By all means, if you've never seen the vaults, get yourself a tour through this intriguing part of Old Town! Thanks for today's installment, Tony.

LOVE the vaults. Thank you for telling the story, I never get tired of hearing about them and you explained it just fine, really enjoyed listening, you sir are a fine storyteller! 🙂 I miss them quite a bit as I was a guide with Mercat for 5 years before lockdown and adore hearing and talking about the city's underground secrets 🙂

I Loved your video "History" chat re the Vaults in Edinburgh. I had the great pleasure of staying in Edinburgh in 2017. I toured the Vaults and did the Ghost walking tour as well. I absolutely loved the stories even though I was scared half to death in the vaults at one point. Being highly sensitive to spirits ( don't think I'm crazy) I could feel the presence of some in those vaults. I also believed the old stories about a city underneath and it being closed off during the plague and a new city being built over top. Glad to have that straightenend out!

If you're ever in Seattle, you should tour the Seattle Underground. It actually is an underground city of sorts. After a big fire, they moved the roadways and sidewalks up a storey, leaving the existing structures underneath.

Love the Border appearance! :D The vaults are fascinating, when I was a kid I always thought people were living under there 😂 all I heard about was the 'city under the city' and assumed it was something from Futurama...

Good to see you and Merlin! This video is very interesting and educational. I went on a tour of the underground caverns about 13 years ago. The guide told us that the city was built on top of the old city. I'm glad to know that it's an urban legend. Now I won't be telling others false information.

Well good morning and welcome back. As interesting as the history of the Vaults is the Engineering is amazing. As a builder the first time I saw the buildings on the Royal Mile and the Castle was HOW did they build on such challenging ground. By the way.....who layed the first base stones for the Castle waaaaay out at the edge right next to certain death?

Tony, I remember when I toured Edinburgh in 1990 our guide told us the story of the closes being walled up after people got the plague and left in there. Interesting
@Jessical07163 жыл бұрын
Same! And, we just did a tour in 2019. Our guide did talk about the business that had used the vaults and the darker things that happened after the businesses left, just as Tony mentioned, but our guide also talked about how it was sealed up due to illness, plague, and some people chose (or were left)to stay behind and were sealed in

Weve done 3 tours of the vaults really fascinating highly reccommend doing 1 when you visit. We met our guide on the royal mile and she told us a few stories before heading down into the vaults. It was lit up by candle light really gave you a feel of what it must of been like when they were in use. If i remember rightly some of the vaults were also used for witch craft.

I always visit Edinburgh when studied in Aberdeen and I never realized there is a huge underground story in it especially when walking around South Bridge and I didn't know why the street named as bridge when I couldn't see the bridge And I rarely explore the oldtown beyond Royal Mile and Edinburgh Uni What a waste... Thanks for sharing to enrich my knowledge on the Scottish Capital.

When we visited, it seemed like all the tours of the vaults were scary houses. Maybe because we were there too close to Halloween. But we passed on a tour with 2 littles with us. We don’t like scary stuff, but I would love to tour it on next trip. We’ve toured the underground city in Seattle years ago. It was ok.
@Jessical07163 жыл бұрын
We did a walking tour, that included the vaults, in 2019. It was an evening tour so it did include Greyfriars Kirkyard and a few ghost stories but wasn’t particularly scary (but depending on the ages of the children, I can see how it could be creepy). I think going earlier in the day would make it better; we went in the evening. The tour was fascinating but we did get creeped out while touring the vaults. While down there we started hearing voices and our guide seemed genuinely alarmed because no one else was supposed to be down there. Turns out another group was ahead of schedule because some of the streets were closed due to the filming of Fast and the Furious 9. So, they came down and “ambushed” us. I can definitely say, 100% though, the vaults are not a place that I’d want to go by myself- I got a little claustrophobic 😂
