Wow, that intro is nostalgic! When I first watched this video, me and my mum were struggling to setup a Raspberry Pi after a suggestion from a school teacher. 10 years later I'm a year into a computer science degree, rediscovering your channel whilst looking into building a home server. Still as helpful as it was back then, so thank you. Who knows, without the Pi, and your resources, I might not be doing this degree today.

I also admire that you are brief and your talks are well planned, so that we get all the knowledge without distraction and can concentrate on the topic rather than the speech. As I've researched Arduino, Beagleboard, Raspberry Pi, and others for a project, I have watched a lot of videos. I'm an experienced software developer and electronics engineer but these videos would be helpful with or without my background. These videos are, by far, the best and most professional technical videos I have watched. The videos are very professional. The speaking rate is just right as is focusing on the topic rather than rambling or conversation. This maximizes the amount of learning I get for my investment in youtube time. Very well done! Thank you.

And I am subscribing due to the excellent quality of the video. There is no better way to learn something at this point than a video like this, DONE RIGHT. Video tutorials on YT are plentiful, but excellent ones like this are much harder to find. I look forward to watching more. The minimum recommended specs for a minecraft server with 2-4 players are; an Intel Pentium 2 300MHz or AMD K6-Based CPU or better, 256GB of ram, 1GB storage. So could be possible but I HIGHLY DOUBT it would be powerful enough to run the server at a playable level. P.S. Great video, big fan right here :)

This is a not (by modern standards) a fast computer. I would not personally use it as an office PC (though may write one article using it to show it can be done). This sais, once loaded the word processor and spreadsheet are perfectly acceptable to use. But it cannot edit video, do 3D modelling, play complex games -- or even handle complex web pages. But it is great as a media player, controller, etc, etc. I understand Firefox OS is available, if currently with no keyboard or mouse support! :)

Just got my Canakit B+ a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be more happy with it. Is it slow? Well, that depends on what you're used to I guess. The main machines I use everyday are an 8 year old Dell E1505 with a Core Duo and 2 GB or RAM, an Asus eeepc 900 with a Celeron 900 and 1 GB or RAM, and a fairly recent Apple MacBook Pro with an i5 and 8 GB or RAM. As far as boot times go, The Pi is the fastest, then the Asus, then the Dell, and then the MacBook (SSDs are going to be faster than HDDs). As far as application launch and speed, it's the Dell, then the MacBook, then it's a bit of a tie between the Asus and the Pi. As for video playback, the Pi is dead last but I've been tweaking it and getting it faster so that it's at least usable. XBMC runs video streams great on it (still working on VLC). As for a general purpose computer, the Pi has the others beat in terms of price to performance ratio. Considering it was $68 US for the kit and hooked right up to my TV, it's a great little machine. Price to performance...the Macbook is dead last because even though it's much newer and has technically much better specs than the others, it takes at least 5 minutes to boot and be usable. It was provided by my employer and frankly, I hardly ever shut it down because it's just such a cumbersome slowpoke to get up and running. I blame the OS here, not the hardware. Everything past OSX 10.4 has been a pig when it comes to resources. TL;DR: The Pi is a perfectly usable computer provided you know what your getting into and are happy with it. If you insist on everything being instant-on, you're in for a bad time and need to just get an iPad. If you can be patient though, it's a heck of a little machine and will be more than enough for what most people would want or need in a basic general purpose computer. And it has everything you need to get into coding right out of the box. No sudo apt-get build essentials going on here. :D And you'll learn stuff, which is the whole point.

Its slow until you over clock to 900 MHz, my issue is for day to day computing, it lacks support. I have no HDMI monitor so using composite all the time can be annoying as windows go off screen and not be resizeable. Not bad for programming, and using as radio transmitter thanks to PiFm.

Thanks for making this instructional video. the operating system you installed looks to be too heavy for the hardware. Which is the LEAST heavy of the bunch that you got the installation option for? I'd like the hardware run as fast as possible. I'm considering of using the Raspberry Pi to build a custom PDA/Pocket PC.
@knfbnny10 жыл бұрын
rasp pi wasnt really designed to run an operating system as a workstation like shown here, but there isnt any reason why you cant switch desktop environments, or even get rid of the desktop environment all together if you are concerned about performance

@159tony10 жыл бұрын
realgroovy24 tech The fact that certain applications run a tad slow shows that the operating system is just a bit too heavy on the device. I'm sure that an OS like Puppy linux or some other lightweight desktop would run even smoother on this device.

yeah although it is running on a sd card which is i think slower than a hard drive. although it should run better on puppy or damn small or something

knfbnny Actually, I think the Raspberry Pi was designed to run an operating system as a workstation. The Raspberry Pi is the result of a project to create a tiny and affordable computer for kids around the world as an educational tool. It's adoption as a favorite in the hobby robotics and hobby automation field came later. That it can run a functional operating system and make the original price goal of 25USD is absolutely awesome.

Chris, another great video tutorial. Just one thing. I downloaded xbmc (Kodi) to my raspberry pi 3 with sudo apt-get install xbmc after setting up my external CD/DVD RW device. I had to reboot my Raspberry PI 3 for it to recognize the CD/DVD RW drive. I'm also getting a "(failed) to load kernel" error message in the very first line of the boot process. It downloaded everything and after downloading, I ran it to watch a DVD. The Kodi started but only played up to the start menu and went no further. When I exited the program, something awful happened to my raspberry pi 3. Now it won't boot at all. Do you think the program corrupted my boot card? I'm running a 32 GB class 10 UHS-1 PNY micro SD card and everything worked well until I downloaded the Kodi program. I don't understand what happened. I'm waiting on my wife's new Dell laptop to be delivered and a USB card reader so I can re-format my micro SD card and re-load the Rasbian Jessie PIXEL operating system. Do you think that the KODI program fried my Raspberry PI3 or just corrupted my operating system? I'm now using my old Sony Vaio running Windows XP and it is running without any virus protection because Windows doesn't support XP anymore. I'm being very careful to only go to sites that I can trust. What gives? I'm definitely at a loss about what has occurred. Could you possibly help me? My e-mail is TwoLane2 at msn dot com. Thanks.
