@dale gend It's pretty much possible to get all kinds of old soundtracks used, if you're a collector and really care about owning it. I even see two copies on Ebay right now, one of which is still sealed.. Also, the Castlavania Box with all soundtracks from the series was released few years back. That one's more expensive though.

@binkinater The names come from the soundtest (hold down A + B + Select, then hit start, at the title screen), so they should all be correct. I passed on naming them "Level 1", "Level 2", etc, because that depends on the path you take.

I remember hearing this song on a Sonic rom hack, and basically they remix the theme and I fell in love with the song. I then years ago found out it was from a Castlevania theme, but I could never find it. Finally after three thousand years, I finally found this freaking theme lol. Took me at least 6 years

To each their own, I say. I made it easy to compare the different versions because I find it pretty interesting. :) Some I like more with the VRC6, some I don't... But for clarification, there is no FM synthesis in the Japanese version. It has 2 additional pulse waves (with more duty cycles available), and 1 sawtooth wave.

I prefer to listen to the Japanese version as it clearly sounds better but this version fits the game's overall theme much better, it has a more creepy mythical style. The japanese version has a more epic tone with better instruments and bass.

It's cool to get this flavor but it's even cooler that the Famicom edition wasn't juggling musical parts like this one had too. Being able to enjoy/realise each instrument fully after hearing this version was a real treat.

Even tho the game was made with the VRC6 sound chip in mind available only for the Famicom since it can support third party custom mapper chips. Both are still better in their own rights because Konami is always making great music in any hardware at the time (Arcade cabinet with FM chips, NES/Famicom or the MSX)

@moviemovies1 I did a quick but careful comparison, by isolating all the other channels and only listening to noise + DPCM from both soundtracks. The both use standard DPCM and noise for the drums. Two things make them sound different- the noise is used differently. You have much more sloshy, loud open hi-hat sound in the JP version. The US version I think uses mostly the same samples but only truncated to save room. The samples sound bigger in the JP version because you get to hear 'more'.

What's with old nes games and their almost eerie like appearance? Honestly, the harsh lighting and almost dotted like shadows reminds me of a Romantic era styled dot painting combined with Caravaggio's style. Which is why I guess NES games really capture the eerie and the disturbing.
