I've made almost 200 videos tearing down blown up engines. Here are some of my favorites:
The worst blown up engine, 8L V10 Ram • 8 LITERS OF DESTRUCTIO...
The Second Worst Blown up, Kia V6 • Taking "Blown Up Engin...
Nissan VK56DE Total Neglect • OIL IS CHEAPER! Nissan...
Audi S6 V10 Extreme Carnage! • DEVASTATED Audi S6 5.2...
Today we tear into a very HOT engine. By that I mean, that the demand far exceeds the supply which is why these engines used are $5500-$7000 PLUS core charge, and why the core charge is over $1k! This is an L86 6.2L Gen5 GM V8 from a 2014 Cadillac Escalade. These direct injected, all aluminum V8's pump out a stellar 420HP. You can find these in 2014+ Escalade, Yukon, Silverado, Denali, Sierras, etc. Because of their extremely high core cost, its rare I get one of these in. As well, most of the cores I see on these look like this one, totally pooched! But why are they failing? Why do they fail THIS BAD? What caused this amount of damage? You'll have to watch the video to find out.
Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto recycling business called Importapart. Part of our model includes dismantling blown up and core engines to salvage the good, usable parts. We do not rebuild or repair engines, merely supply parts to those who do.
I really hope you enjoyed this teardown. As always I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!
-Eric

I was a GM tech when these were introduced. Almost immediately they had problems. I had one give up backing off the delivery trailer from the rail yard. They didn't like when it got below 40° f . They constantly have misfires, the mechanical fuel pumps fail , the afm fails, the rings fail, the head gaskets fail honestly the only redeeming quality is a toddler can tear these down and rebuild them. Your bent push rod is most likely from a failed afm lifter...super common. I loved it when they managed to get wedged in the bore and you'd have to replace the 8 thousand mile engine because you broke your pry bar and slide hammer trying to remove a hammer forged lifter .

Lots of folks these days just don't check their oil. My daughter (age 44) dropped by the other day for a visit. Said her car (an Infinity QX-80, 2014) was making a 'rattling sound' on cold start up. Checked the oil, it was FIVE QUARTS LOW. It holds six. I said, 'hey hon, when was the last time you checked the oil?' She replied; 'oh, the oil light never comes on when I'm driving, so I figured it must be full of oil'. Many people still believe the oil pressure idiot light is the oil LEVEL indicator light.

Nope. High pressure fuel pump leaks when it fails. That's fuel dilution. The gas vapor builds up, and the pcv dumps it into the intake and massive misfires. That's why so much of the engine was washed clean.
@DaveFromColorado
@DaveFromColorado 28 күн бұрын
@@craigquann all those GM displacement on demand engines are known for consuming large amount of oil, the old control ring is usually the culprit. I'm not saying your theory is wrong, because that is a possibility, but looking at the damage I'm guessing it started out with a rod knock and it went ignored until the rod finally broke. I've got a 5.3 with a rod knock that has been sitting not moving for 6 years now because of the oil control Rings failing it that badly. But without having access to the rest of the vehicle, I guess we will never know. Again that's not to say your theory is wrong, I'm going with my anecdotal experience to saying why I believe my theory is correct.

Back in the 50s,60s.70s,80s, and most the 90s, when block and heads were made of cast iron and we beat the hell out of them with missed gears and such and the tach was coming down from the 7 or 8 grand and only BBC had a problem once in a while because the valve stem keeper would pop off and destroy most of those engine. People only bought them for one reason back then and that was to drag race anybody they could find back in the day. All the problem started when they redesigned engines with aluminum blocks heads most other part with aluminum parts. All they needed to do was to fix the good engines made way back and update them to todays standards.

GM issued a notice specifically regarding the Gen5 6.2 and they are having a huge shortage of cores themselves. But apparently some “techs” are putting head bolts back into cores and impacting them without cleaning the head bolts holes of coolant and debris….

Blows my mind how a corporation as HUGE as GM is can have shortages of ANYTHING. They can pick and choose suppliers at will. Something hasn't been adding up with all of this ever since covid hit. Makes me wonder if this is an under-handed way to FORCE people to buy new vehicles, and kill the used vehicle market. Seems there's been many attempts by our government to do the same thing (Cash for Clunkers). I think the whole "shortage" thing is manufactured. Just my humble opinion.

Oddly enough, I don't see a lot of pursuit videos that feature Escalades. Of course, that *could* be a sampling error. Perhaps the FTY demographic in Arkansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Florida prefers other cars (Chargers, Challengers, and...Kias). And the occasional motorbike, because you haven't lived until you've laid the bike down doing 100 on an off-ramp and played pachinko in the trees beyond.

@christopherreed4723
@christopherreed4723 27 күн бұрын
@@friedpickle9828 FTY is a law enforcement acronym. It stands for Failure To Yield. In other words, when some doubtless upstanding citizen sees flashing blue and red lights in his or her rearview mirror, and does *not* pull to the right side of the road at the next opportunity. But it's often used to describe any pursuit of a fleeing vehicle by police. Technically, if we want to be pedantic, that is all it is. In Arizona state law it's covered under A.R.S. 28-1595A and defined as "The operator of a motor vehicle who knowingly fails or refuses to bring the operator’s motor vehicle to a stop after being given a visual or audible signal or instruction by a peace officer or duly authorized agent of a traffic enforcement agency..." and is called "Failure to Stop". Actually fleeing from police in a vehicle is (in Arizona at least) called "Unlawful Flight" and is dealt with in a separate statute (A.R.S. 28-622.01 if you're curious). End of lecture 😄

@@tatianatayts3051 The variable oil pump slides break and cause no oil pressure. The fuel injectors are failure prone too but that usually only gives a P050D code and misfires on startup. AFM lifters are a far more common failure and in the 2021+ L87 engines bottom end failures are stupid common even at low mileage.

I knew a machinist who made a cart out of square tubing. It was just an open frame on wheels. Rectangular in shape it would accommodate most V8 engines. He could roll and shift around an engine block as needed. Being just a flat rectangle on legs he could install/remove pistons with ease, flip the block over (frame was sized to have oil pan edge rest on the frame) and install heads. He had a ledge at ankle level that held a sheet of plywood to store parts or catch fluids. He never needed an engine stand, said they were too risky and he liked all ten of his toes.

Short tripping + DI = fuel dilution. GM recommends 5W30 for the Corvette LT1 but 0W20 for the SUV's with an L86. Thin down 0W20 that already has thousands of miles on it with a bunch of gasoline and the bearings can get a little unhappy when you floor it to get your 6,000 lb SUV up to merging speed on the on-ramp.

My L87 engine seized at 12k on my 2022 Yukon AT4 6.2. When torn down found all rod bearings seized and welded to the crank which was discolored from heat. Found only one bad main bearing. When researched found that my issue was very common. Also found that my bearings are same part number as the corvette LT2 engine. My engine uses 0W20 oil while the corvette LT2 uses 0W40 mobil 1. The Corvette LT2 doesn't suffer from my issue. I guess oil is the culprit where it damaged a main bearing which leaked oil pressure and starved the rods.
