My L87 engine seized at 12k on my 2022 Yukon AT4 6.2. When torn down found all rod bearings seized and welded to the crank which was discolored from heat. Found only one bad main bearing. When researched found that my issue was very common. Also found that my bearings are same part number as the corvette LT2 engine. My engine uses 0W20 oil while the corvette LT2 uses 0W40 mobil 1. The Corvette LT2 doesn't suffer from my issue. I guess oil is the culprit where it damaged a main bearing which leaked oil pressure and starved the rods.

I was a GM tech when these were introduced. Almost immediately they had problems. I had one give up backing off the delivery trailer from the rail yard. They didn't like when it got below 40° f . They constantly have misfires, the mechanical fuel pumps fail , the afm fails, the rings fail, the head gaskets fail honestly the only redeeming quality is a toddler can tear these down and rebuild them. Your bent push rod is most likely from a failed afm lifter...super common. I loved it when they managed to get wedged in the bore and you'd have to replace the 8 thousand mile engine because you broke your pry bar and slide hammer trying to remove a hammer forged lifter .

The L86 6.2s are hard to come by. Lots of 5.3s, and 6.0s out there. We pay over 500 per core (as long as there's not a hole in the block). On this generation, the vain style oil pump is usually the culprit of failure. So much so that there's an aftermarket option to put the old style pump in, delet the AFM manifold and put in older style lifters. So the AFM features are what ends up killing these. The other issue is extending oil changes while running 0W20 oil in it.

GM had a bearing failure on cylinder one on these motors. It was a factory flaw, went to look at a 2023, and they were still doing and was a shortage. I had a 2016 GMC Denali with the l83, and it was problematic, but did ok. I traded for a new 2023 Nissan Armada platinum and never looked back. The Nissan is dated, but the 5.6 just outruns the 6.2 without any fuel savings crap, so I pay over double than my l83, and a tad more than my l86. I did oil at no more than 3,000 miles.
@PapawCulberson5 ай бұрын
The main cause of that specific failure is not enough oil changes - change it at 3K at the most and use full synthetic engine oil. Do not use 0w-anything. Use 5w-30 ot 10w-30 Valvoline Full Synthetic engine oil in these engines - Wix XP oil filters. When the oil gets maple syrup color but till a little transparent - change it. Cheaper to do oil changes than replace an engine. Valvoline Full Synthetic Protect and Restore is an ideal oil for this application. AND - buy a handheld tuner and delete DOD/AFM on these engines.

@@craigquann all those GM displacement on demand engines are known for consuming large amount of oil, the old control ring is usually the culprit. Freightliner started shipping chassis with that engine's 6.6L cousin last year, and I can't wait to see all the new and exciting failure modes. The most common one seems to be a failed fuel pump control module, which is stupidly complex, but I have my concerns about the intake valve carbon buildup. A Freightliner rep was saying they swirl in such a way that they won't have that issue, which I'm pretty sure is complete BS.

I recall Car and Driver having a Corvette long term loaner with a very early production LT1 that blew up. Apparently the early run of them had some machining issues or debris. Wonder if the later ones are more stout.
@colinschmitz82977 ай бұрын
I thought of that too. At the time, I think they tried to blame it on a oil filter. Not sure that I believe them.

A correction, perhaps not that particular year but a few years later the VIN was in fact etched in the block. Located on the left rear portion in a approx 1"x3" location. How do I know? I etched a few thousand myself along with the 4.8 6.0 in their cutaway trucks and also GMs current 4500-6500 commercial series. This was done do to the fact of the high theft rate of these and a requirement of the DOT if I recall correctly. Facts matter P.S. this also includes the trans and frame in commercial vehicles

Destruction, I mean displacement on demand. A very neat system, but wow is the cost of ownership high.
@davidpowell33477 ай бұрын
"Destruction on demand" good new description for the V8 - 6 - 4 system that has never been any good and never will be any good regardless of whether it appears on a Hemi or a Caddy or a Honda or a Toyota or a Kia at the same time added a new trouble causing system for lowering the oil pump output while the "displacement on demand" wacko digitally connected gizmos increase the needed oil pump volume demand threatening the oil pressure to the crankshaft bearings not to mention the "'direct injection" which is idiotic unless also accompanied by a port injection system for normal driving use

I was a GM tech. Reminds me of a DirtyMax we had come in. Had a knock and a slight miss, yes it drove in and I drove it in to diagnose it. Found no compression in #2. Teardown revealed no piston remaining, just the rod and wristpin bouncing around in the hole. Dirtymax is a pretty tough motor.

The 6.2 L direct injection fail regularly at 120-150 K. Rings get locked up and ball bearings carrying the rockers fall out 😢

The rings only have problems when clown play games with how far they can stretch out their oil change intervals. When did GM switch from needle bearings to ball bearings in the rockers?

GM issued a notice specifically regarding the Gen5 6.2 and they are having a huge shortage of cores themselves. But apparently some “techs” are putting head bolts back into cores and impacting them without cleaning the head bolts holes of coolant and debris….
@firstlast---7 ай бұрын
Correct. That has been addressed and all dealer technicians have been instructed to no longer do that
@SmittySmithsonite7 ай бұрын
Blows my mind how a corporation as HUGE as GM is can have shortages of ANYTHING. They can pick and choose suppliers at will. Something hasn't been adding up with all of this ever since covid hit. Makes me wonder if this is an under-handed way to FORCE people to buy new vehicles, and kill the used vehicle market. Seems there's been many attempts by our government to do the same thing (Cash for Clunkers). I think the whole "shortage" thing is manufactured. Just my humble opinion.

@firstlast---7 ай бұрын
@@tatianatayts3051 That's not how it works. Going forward any dealership that is sending in cores that have been hydro locked from not cleaning threads will be on the hook for thousands. Gm isn't paying for it. Compliance is required
