Exploding Burn Barrel FAIL: Maximum Swirl!?

I got my hands on a used 55 gallon steel drum to burn my yard brush with. I tried a new design on the vents in an attempt to create a nice clean burn swirl. It did the job but lighting up the wet leaves was a challenge to say the least. Here is what happened.

Shredded leaves make the best mulch! They feed the soil, which feeds the plants. And they compost quickly.

With my barrel leaf burner, there is practically ZERO smoke. I love it. I took a barrel with both the top and bottom completely removed, then set the barrel on top of four bricks ( placed equally apart). Next, I fill the barrel with leaves. After it is topped off, I light the top and get it burning. Once it is going decent, I then reach down and light the BOTTOM of the pile at the bricks. They start burning. The heat and smoke runs up the pile of leaves and causes them to smoke heavily. But guess what? Smoke is unburned fuel. That fuel now travels up the barrel and into the burning leaves/flames in the top, causing the smoke to ignite. You'll have some smoke for the first few minutes, but once it gets going, WOW, what a beautiful, clear, smokeless flame. When the level gets down, you can continue to dump leaves into the top with the rake. I find doing this in the evening while is dark and cool to be the most enjoyable chill time.

Great tip, I need to modify this one. My leaves were pretty wet also, and combined with the paint burning off it was a smoke show for a little lol

Thanks for the video dude! Gas vapors are heavier than air and sunk to the bottom before you lit it causing the little boom. I learned the hard way too.

If you need to use gas to start a pile of leaves on fire, turn in your man card.

Blow air in there with a shop vac blower. Adding air will reduce smoke.

Next time, for even more efficient burn, use a 22.5" grill grate, and use steel tubing to raise it above the intake vents. Cuts down on the bed of coals massively. Almost everything burns off. I was actually considering making a 1/4" mesh screen catch below it to catch the stuff that gets through the grill grate, to make it burn everything that isn't tiny

Kool video man!!! Gotta love a burn barrel! But NEVER NEVER start fires with gasoline!!!!!You will pay one day! Always use fuel with a low ignition point like kerosene or diesel fuel etc...!

I use roughly 50/50 diesel to gasoline to start fires. It's a good mix of violent but not to violent. Some firefighters gave me the idea

I ended up using your design for the cuts...and MAN that works great. I've seen barrels that didn't want to stay lit no matter what you did. This stays lit great. I got to have one good burn and then my county just issued a burn ban for 90 days. :( More fun later.

1. I don't live in the city, so burning is normal and people don't complain. 2. Burning leaves are a no no- mulch them on your lawn- is great food for the grass and better for the air we breathe. 3. You should have known what would happen if you did this and live in a city. 4. NEVER use gasoline for anything but running gas engines!!

There's a video out of a guy using a barrel with a locking lid but he has a leaf blower plumbed into the bottom so the air charge swirls with the shape or curve of barrel Maximum burn and virtually no ash or leftover

Your burn barrel was nice to designed the holes were a bit too big but definitely nicely designed As for the burn -- accelerance can create ugly situations But the most important thing it's to know the ordinances regarding use of burn barrels in your locale. Notwithstanding it does sound like you were burning for a long period of time.

I found that the holes at the bottom began to clog up with ash. It had a good burn for a few hours of wet leaves. Lessons were learned. I just expected it to flash immediately.
