That AP shotgun slug was absolutely brutal. I couldnt imagine getting hit by something so hard that it basically just smashes a steel cylinder into me. I think a cool thing to look at would be to set the hi-speed camera up perpendicular to a steel plate to watch how material comes out through the backside when shot with AP rounds.
@Phage0070
@Phage0070 Жыл бұрын
They talk about not being able to see the armor piercing effect of the AP slug, but I'm pretty sure it is that rod that pierces the back of the cylinder as it splatters against the plate. I suspect it is "armor piercing" in the sense of piercing Kevlar body armor, not steel plates. Whatever hardened penetrator was encased in the slug was stopped dead by the plate and the rest of the slug continued on.
@DamienDarkside
@DamienDarkside Жыл бұрын
Dude it wouldn't even be the ball that would kill you. With how embedded that Steel Plate Cylinder was into a wooden post, that would be in you. The STEEL PLATE would kill you itself (apart from obvious physics of the energy being dispersed into that plate but I digress)! Point being, the projectile doesn't kill you, it makes your armor kill you.

@@robertfrapples2472 not really, they hit the aspirin by trial and error and luck. 😅 The archer's paradox is just the fact that the arrow is pointed off target before it is launched (on longbows and other bows that are not cut out past center), but is still going to travel in a straight line directly to the target, because it flexes around the bow. You couldn't possibly time that dynamic reaction of the arrow mid flight.

Some old black powder pistols, or a muzzle loader, or personally, I would love to see how something like a 45-70 would do against a plate. The ball shot made a really interesting phenomena of energy transfer spalling. Much like squash head tank rounds of WW2, and until fairly recently. It wasn't as much will this solid punch a hole through the armor, but if it hits it and dumps energy, the concussive wave would transfer through the armor to blast off a piece of the armor from the inside wall of the tank. Sending razor sharp shrapnel bouncing around the inside of the tank. In this case the ball just punched and sent a 'rivet' into whatever the backer to as of the armor.

That final shot reminded me of the tests I saw that showed how the 5.56mm M193 bullet (55gr, 3250fps) was able to defeat body armor. The bullet would deform upon hitting a hardened-steel target, thereby transferring a great deal of the energy into the plate. While the bullet itself would never penetrate, it would punch a perfect little, cylindrical divot out of the plate and into whatever was behind the target. As you increase the hardness of a steel plate, you also increase the brittleness of the steel, so having a lead bullet smack into it at high speed was enough to overwhelm the integrity of the steel in a tiny area of the plate (while the remainder of the plate remained unaffected).

Id recommend using waterfowl steel shot, makes for a nice show... just stand behind cover.

That hole punch shot makes me think of how a glass can somewhat liquify and then shatter because of sound vibrations .

with first slug at 33k fps you can start to see the speed on the fragments of the impact, very useful science there lol

Though arrows aren't normally considered to penitrate modern armor... But there are platforms that do deliver arrows and some insane speeds

Awesome channel! I’d love to see a sabot slug in slow mo. I hunt with them every year out of my savage 220. Would be awesome!!

That piece that got punched out was done by the spalling effect. The ball hit the plate so hard it didn't penetrate it but blew a chunk of the armor out at the impact sight.

Hey guys... only recently found your channel and I am loving it... telling all my mates and as a scientist loving the science. I was wondering if the sparking is coming from the carbon content of the hardened steel... Anyhoo I was wondering if you could do a video on different bullets ricocheting off said steel plate... different guns/calibers/casings. I think the high speed as it skips off the plate would be epic !!!! Love your work !!!

Great slow mo video! It's cool to see things like this. I don't like the foley effects, though. If the actual sound was slowed by the same amount as the actual video, the sounds would be pitched too low for us to even hear, much less recognize. I blame Hollywood for conditioning us to expect normal-sounding noises from events viewed at abnormal rates of time passage.
