A non-broadcast documentary (made just for fun) filmed during a 2011 expedition led by Stewart McPherson in search of new species of carnivorous pitcher plants (Nepenthes).
This 25 minute documentary follows on from “The Discovery of Nepenthes leonardoi” film. We follow Stewart McPherson’s continuing search for new species of carnivorous plants. Stewart explores two remote peaks in the Philippines, Mount Anipahan on Palawan, and Mount Kiamo on Mindanao. On Mount Anipahan, a possible new species of pitcher plant (Nepenthes) is discovered, while on Mount Kiamo, two spectacular new species are revealed (later named N. ceciliae and N. pulchra).
A full account of the discovery of Nepenthes ceciliae and N. pulchra, and the descriptions of these plants as new species, as well as many other spectacular new Nepenthes species is provided in Redfern’s recently published book title New Nepenthes Volume 1.
Filmed by Andy Smith.

all these pitcher plant videos have now got me addicted... i think because there's such a structure of mission for finding the plant it creates a great narrative. There's lots to tell with all the locals and the different plants, how hard it is to get through the jungle. And an epic job has been done editing and narrating this, it could be professional.... sometimes you can find stuff better than tv/cable on youtube, amazing!

I'm from Bukidnon. And Ive been climbing peaks around Bukidnon, Mindanao like Mt. Kitanglad and Mt. Sumagaya and have really observed and seen Nepenthes plants around the trail. And I was really thinking that some of our floras around these mountains have never been properly documented. This is really amazing work.

David Roberts I think no, If he collects he'll endanger the remaining plants from poachers and he knows that.

@LagiNaLangAko23 What you are suggesting is already in practice, I think they call it CITES or something. But it wasn't perfect, usually plants collected and sold are priced higher because the profit is used to protect those species. But a poacher can simply collect those wild plants(or animals) and sell them for a cheaper price. So they're still in danger.
@jewiesnew3786
@jewiesnew3786 5 жыл бұрын
@LagiNaLangAko23 Unfortunately, poachers sell them to the black market, which is hidden to the authorities. There they make a lot of money to the highest bidders, then use the money to bribe officials and even do ''inside jobs'' and disguise themselves as protectors, where they have the opportunity to poach these poor things.

Wonderful to see new species found live. I found this after watching the UK treasure islands vids. Mankind takes as much as he gives, and the path to enlightenment also brings with it the downfall of all that you were trying to preserve. So the poachers will follow the same tracks and it will become the latest tourist mecca. Of course if mankind left the place well alone, non of the wildlife would be in danger. But we cant get rid of the rats! Next time, use a helicopter.

I somehow started to watch one of your videos.. and now watched like 10 videos of you haha.. and I am not even interested in biology or plants or what ever you are doing hahaha but ehm cool... I just "woke up" a bit.. like wtf there is this topic.. and people who really are into it and then very specific for just nepenthes.. like you are just living in your own universe! no one else cares about it in the mainstream (I mean there are some..) then I realised that I am doing the same... I am IT guy => Software engineer => Frontend developer => Javascript Dev => into specific frontend frameworks => Angular => Angular 2.0 with Typescript... and I am dayli fighting with others over which technolgy is now the best to chose to create a website haha.. who the F** cares? life is strange haha just enjoy it! and don't forget about family and friends. cheers!
