Traveling a thousand kilometers from the coast of Mexico, the National Geographic Pristine Seas team set out to better understand the island’s reefs, unexplored deep waters, and surrounding seamounts. The expedition was part of Pristine Seas, National Geographic’s largest initiative dedicated to environmental preservation, founded by National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Enric Sala in 2008. 2010 a tanker, the Sachem Osprey, collided directly with the atoll, spilling its contents of xylene onto the reef. A little-mentioned chapter of environmental disaster there. Additionally, that leftover ammunition from ww2 continues leaching / polluting the environment.

Interesting but why didn't you dive in the freshwater lagoon? Much more interesting. Freshwater lake in the middle of an ocean.

The lagoon is dead. Acidic waters and overeutrophied. There's a bit of seaweed and that's it.

It was discovered in 1711 by 2 French Captains who wrote it in their diaries. The French Are the only ones with a written Proof of their discovery. France officially took possession of the Island in 1848 and nobody contested it. As Mexico failed to show any proof that the spanish had discovered the Island before the French, it was granted to France by the King of Italy in an international arbitrage. Mexico itself recognized french sovereignty on the Island.

Nicholas Janosy Thanks Sherlock. Yet the first humans to set foot on the Island and the only ones with a written proof were French. In international law, a Terra nullius goes to the First one who can prove it found the Land First, in this case the French as the international arbitrage said.

Besides introducing invasive species that nearly destroyed the fragile ecosystem of the island, which they did not discover themselves btw, and overfishing illegally the area, I don't really see what the Mexicans did in this island.
