Darius? I have never seen you happier! I've watched almost everything you have produced! Rome, Italy, the Mediterranean and now Crete! You look relaxed and smiling more! I thank you for your work and I WISH I could travel and explore as you do. I'm 71 now with the soul of a 17 year old! I had my chance in the mid 1970's and passed on it! Now I regret that! If people have the chance and choice to explore the history of us...do it while you can! I suppose you were named after Darius the Great of Persepolis? You are doing great things Darius! Keep it up! I am Proud of you! Wishing from Montreal 😎

I think that's probably the respectful and tactful explanation of Evan's work I've ever heard! Well done! It's easy to sit in judgement of what he did, without understanding why - trying to encourage investors to give him more money to further excavate and preserve what was on site. Appalling by today's standards, but necessary 100yrs ago with professional archaeology in its infancy. Knossos is a must-see for anyone visiting Crete, a superb glimpse into ancient and mythical Greece.

I agree with this. Without that dude, we may even know this place exists. I also do find it cool how u can see the colors that probably existed there. In rome, u really have to imagine that things like the column of trajan at one point were colorful

I really appreciate it. I felt that I should just take a look back in my observations. As a practicing archaeologist in the 21st century, of course, I recognize its inherent limitations. We DON'T do it like that anymore. Still, it's important to recognize it for its own contemporary world. The site still resonates with me as I walk through it. It's so important to explore it (as it is) - and the many other "palace complexes" throughout Crete!

What treasure to humanity that such an historical site was so well preserved. As the late Bronze Age is still quite mysterious.

The Bull Vaulters is my favorite fresco ever. It's an expression of their attitude towards life. The bull's fur symbolizes or even depicts the milkyway, the horns are the lunar symbol. I think the Minoans had the best bronze age of everyone.

This was the best video on Knossos I've seen. Both in terms of academic info and video footage. Thanks for suggesting reading about Daedalus and the Minotaur while there. Please do more about Bronze Age Mycenae, Tiryns, Pylos, Dendra, Iolcus, Thebes etc.

A lot of controversy around it- just how much "reconstruction" was involved is subject to debate these days!

That last few minutes of tips and recommendations is really good, I see (and may have done it too) people rushing through archeological sites taking pictures but not taking the time to really touch an ancient rock, sculpted by hand thousands of years ago by people with the same feelings and desires of today, make that connection with what brought the civilization we enjoy, stop and smell the roses moments are really relevant when exploring these sites.

at the end of this video you've given the best advice for exploring any historic site and for absorbing all the impressions and enjoying the experience. i would add ... at least read a bit upfront about the site you're going to visit, or watch a youtube video, so you understand where you are and what you're looking at. ps: i love your engaging storytelling skills that enrich these videos.

Thank you Darius. Thank you also for keep reminding people of the "heavy restorations" and what is real and what is not. There was so much reconstruction and guessing, that it is not possible to tell what is real and old there, and what is Evans's imagination. One can never be sure, unless he is a professional expert on these ruins or even in the museum there. I was so dismayed. I had travelled so long to see this dubious thing. BUT, the scenery, the air and the knowledge of being in Crete, made it very worthwhile. I supposed he needed to make the place look good enough for people to visit. It is not anastylosis, but a lot of fabrication.

Yes looking at the site is a far cry from what we would do today- but it's still an incredible site. We just need to be aware of the process of reconstruction there and the current attempts to preserve the site.

When I lived on Malta some years back I couldn't believe how hot and dry the summers were. The oldest Maltese homes collected the winter rainwater in underground cisterns but that was for one family. When I went to Knossos I kept wondering where they got the water a place with that many residents would need for drinking, cooking and washing. Was rainwater sufficient? Darius, can you enlighten me?
