Don't miss our tips on safely navigating abandoned sites and the best spots for capturing hauntingly beautiful photos.
The Lime Green Mansion is an iconic yet abandoned property in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Designed with grand ambitions, it's said to be based on the Romanian Tsar's Palace (The native country of the original residents). The mansion features 14 rooms, high ceilings, and expansive balconies. Unfortunately, the project was never completed, leaving the mansion in a state of disrepair. Over the years, it has attracted attention for its vibrant exterior and potential for transformation.
The mansion was abandoned before completion due to various financial and personal issues faced by the original owners. The property has since become a local curiosity, often explored by urban adventurers and those intrigued by its mysterious history and striking appearance.
The mansion is currently listed for sale, presenting a unique opportunity for someone with the vision and resources to restore it to its former glory. The property sits on a 13-acre parcel of land, offering stunning views of the surrounding valleys and hills, making it a potential dream home for the right buyer.
Also known as Melbourne's cheapest mansion, it was originally built by a European couple who had grand dreams of constructing a luxurious mansion to raise their family. Tragically, the couple passed away before the house was completed, and with no heirs, the mansion was left abandoned. Over the years, the property has fallen into disrepair, with graffiti, broken windows, and overgrown vegetation becoming its defining features. Despite its dilapidated state, the mansion remains a local curiosity and a potential goldmine for someone willing to restore it to its former glory

Lived my earlier life in the local area, passing this house nearly every week. Always eye-catching in the rural setting, masses of red-brown bricks set against the greenery. I never saw the appeal in the design but knew it was a huge place. Often filled with construction vehicles in the front, it never seemed finished (evidently). I know it got used once for a paintball event, probably added to the damage. It's on a rural main road, nowhere near a town, vandals must've really wanted to get in there on purpose.

Thanks Owen. Yes it really is an unusual design, with few internal doors and a confusing room structure. For me the biggest appeal was the two large ‘turrets’, as I love castles, as well as the huge rooftop balcony. I could imagine sitting up on that top level and enjoying the view with a few friends, having a nice meal and watching the stars come out. It really is a shame to see it all smashed up, hopefully the next owners (it’s on the market) can give it some new life

From what I’ve been told, the original owner was Eastern European (not sure from where exactly) and designed the house to emulate the Tsar palace from his country of birth. Clearly, plumbing was an afterthought 😂. Despite the perplexing design, I can’t believe the amount of damage that has occurred over the years. People are just evil. Great video! Thanks 👍

I didn't know the part about emulating the Tsar's palace, thanks I'll add that to the info in the description :) Yes I definitely couldn't see where the kitchen would have been, either it wasn't there or it's been completely removed. It's a huge contrast from the footage of how it used to look, and it's surprising just how much the brambles take over!

It would have been incredible to see it while it was still looking nice. I found some footage from a news story in the early 2000s, while it was furnished, and it looked so good. I hope the new owner is able to bring it back to life :)
