Learning to see a situation or a challenge from multiple, even conflicting points of view is an important leadership skill. Although it takes practice to develop this ability, the rewards are numerous. Seeing multiple interpretations not only can help you be less defensive, it can also build credibility with others if they perceive that you appreciate their perspective on issues, even if you don't always agree. Moreover, considering other interpretations helps you see where you’re contributing to the problem. In fact, by checking out another viewpoint, you might find alternative ways to address the challenge at hand.
The Kansas Leadership Center offers leadership development programs to foster stronger, healthier and more prosperous communities and serve the common good.
