Wow what a unique shop! I can't believe the amount of rare stuff he has in there just chucked about. Imagine how much all that could fletch on Yahoo auctions.. I love hidden indie shops like this, it kinda reminds me of the old import shops in London and around the UK in the very early 90's. Great stuff, that's for the vid.

exmosquito Yes, it's a shame that he doesn't run it anymore! According to the owner, Yahoo Auctions is just simpler and no stress. He was sitting on the floor behind the counter throughout the entire time while I was filming, btw :D A very easy-going guy, and really open to chat with game fans. Told me that he sold a lot of his remaining stock to Super Potato a few years ago. Still, all these treasures in there that don't get any attention... sigh. At 7:36-7:40 you can see another 2 brand-new copies of Recca on the shelf right below the Bio Miracles. Mandarake currently has a C-condition copy for sale for 150,000yen o_O

This is absolutely incredible. Any store like this still around? Have you been back to Japan recently? Cheers.
@Toarcade Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I've been back and unfortunately this store was finally closed in 2022 and the building was demolished. There is no other store with this business concept (selling only new old stock) in Japan currently, nor was there ever in the past... I talked to the owner and he explained that he was the only store who pursued this concept of buying up old unsold stock and sell it at (at the time) super high prices. His customers were primarily other game stores and hardcore collectors, not the usual gamer that would go to a store to buy games to play... it was quite unique :) But of course you still have other retro game stores in Japan with a large selection, though prices have soared. Surugaya, Mandarake, Super Potato are all worth a visit. Independent stores like this one have slowly disappeared for the most part, though.

@@Interlocutor_ I spent time in Japan for a study abroad program during undergrad, so staying long-term was never an option (or a desire). I can't speak for the other returning expats, but one theme I've noticed is that even after many years and despite speaking excellent Japanese, some folks just don't feel like they ever really belong because they don't look the part. E.g. you feel like you're at your home and staff members will still rush away to find an Englishspeaker for you like it's your first Japan vacation.

So the question is, can someone come in and still buy stuff? Or does he not sell at all? If he does sell is it at higher prices or is he fair?
@Toarcade9 жыл бұрын
TheAfroman No, you can only buy game unrelated things like the jackets you see hanging around. I asked him for prices for some of the items, and he said I have to look on auction sites for his offers instead.

Great video, love stuff like this so thanks for sharing. Currently residing in Japan myself. You wouldn't happen to know of any more sort of "of the grid game stores"? I know some collectors like to keep stuff like that to them self as they see other collectors as a threat. Which is sad, but never hurts to ask :) Love going on hunts myself, not to necessarily buy anything but just to marvel at everything. To bad i don't know anyone that shares that enthusiasm though >_

6:49 Mega Drive 3? It's a clone or genuine Sega?
@Toarcade7 жыл бұрын
It's an officially licensed product for the non-Japanese Asian market, but it was of very poor quality. More info: segaretro.org/Mega_Drive_3_(2000)
