Fascinating, my late dad Terry Smith was Shed Manager at Longsight in the 70s until he retired in the mid-80s. Used to visit him there and check out the 86s & 87s when I was a train spotter around 1980. Met one of his BR drivers, Vernon who was a tough WW2 SAS vet, my dad told me one time Vernon was stopped at a station when 2 thugs tried to get into his cab, Vernon threw them both out onto the platform with their tails between their legs looking a little worse for wear.

The last time I went there for work (for some railway property work) the depot on the down side said "Eurostar Est Ici" on it. Oh not it wasn't!!! The depot were nice to deal with even making sure my car safe when parked up.

The 08's had the nicknames, Gronks, Jocko's and 350's (because of the 350BHP)

That noise was caused by a spirax valve, which forces moisture out of the air braking system
