Despite the importance of Nazareth in the lives of Jesus and his parents, it did not immediately become a place of Christian pilgrimage. The first shrine was probably built sometime in the middle of the 4th century.
The Spanish pilgrim, the Lady Egeria, who visited Nazareth in 383, was shown a "big and very splendid cave in which Mary lived. An altar has been placed there." This was probably the larger of the caves enshrined in the grotto of the present Basilica of the Annunciation. By Roman Catholic tradition, it is the place where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary.
By 570, a church had been built on the site. A 4th- or 5th-century Greek mosaic inscription was found, with the dedication: "For Conon, Deacon of Jerusalem".
Pilgrims to Nazareth in the Byzantine period were also shown a cave with a spring from which Mary drew water (possibly the spring beneath the present Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangel Gabriel), and the "synagogue" where Jesus read from Isaiah. Various accounts mention church buildings at all three sites. These early churches apparently survived the Arab conquest, because the pilgrim Arculf, a bishop from Gaul visiting in 670, saw two "very large churches" in the town. But by the time of the Crusader conquest in 1099, all the Christian holy places in Nazareth were in ruins.
The Norman knight Tancred, Prince of Galilee, immediately ordered the construction of a new cathedral above the cave in the center of the town. It was the largest of the Crusader-built churches, and the Anglo-Saxon pilgrim Saewulf, visiting in 1102, described it as "a very noble monastery" (he also reported that the town had been entirely laid waste by the Saracens). This Crusader cathedral was apparently damaged by the earthquake in 1170. Repairs began, but were not complete when the Crusaders suffered defeat at the Battle of Hittim and were expelled from the town.
A series of subsequent treaties allowed continued Christian pilgrimage to the Grotto of the Annunciation during the next hundred years, even after 1263, when the town was sacked and the churches destroyed by order of the Mamluk sultan Baybars. The possibility of pilgrimage came to an end in 1291 with the fall of Acre and the final expulsion of the Crusaders from the remaining Frankish settlements and fortresses along the coast.
A Roman Catholic clerical presence in Nazareth was not re-established until 1620 when the Druze emir Fakhr-a-Din permitted the Franciscan fathers to purchase the ruins of the Crusader cathedral and grotto. In 1730, the Franciscans obtained a firman (decree) from the Ottoman sultan allowing them to build a new church on the site. This structure was enlarged in 1877, and then completely demolished in 1955 to allow construction of a new basilica. Before the start of actual building, a thorough archeological investigation of the site was carried out by the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (Jerusalem).
Designed by the architect Giovanni Muzio, the present Basilica of the Annunciation is built on two levels. The upper level follows the outline of the 12th-century Crusader- cathedral (a nave, flanked by two aisles), and partly reconstructs the eastern apses. The lower level enshrines the Byzantine grotto.
The new basilica, the largest Christian sanctuary in the Middle East, was dedicated in 1964 by Pope Paul VI during his historic visit to the Holy Land, and consecrated on 23 March 1969. A second, ecumenical service two days later included the participation of prelates and clergy from the Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Syrian and Lutheran churches.

It’s confirmed in Revelation 12 where “a great sign is given” - we see the woman who is the mother of the child who will rule the whole earth with a rod of iron. She is crowned with stars and with the moon under her feet.

I had just subscribed a few days ago when I saw your posting of the excavation of the Pool of Siloam. Now that I see you posting this about Jesus' earthly mother Mary and that you're reverencing this place in 'the Church of the Annunciation', I see that you are either Orthodox or catholic, and I thought you were born-again knowing God's uncorrupted Word before the Vatican and the Jesuits changed The Holy Bible, in which case I am now unsubscribing. Mary didn't ascend. She isn't co-matrix ruling with her Son in Heaven. She was a sinner as we all were, as Paul wrote, 'There is no one righteous - no, not one." EXCEPT LORD JESUS. The term 'queen of Heaven' came from the Babylonians... Noah's great grandson Nimrod who wanted to be high as God building the Tower of Babel. The action of repetitive prayer on the beads comes from the Babylonians. The worshiping of Nimrod's wife Semiramus and son Tammuz is where the Vatican/Jesuits came up with worshiping Mary and baby Jesus. Do the research. Don't accept pagan worship. Mary herself would be APPALLED that ANYONE is worshiping or idolizing her or things being associated to her by human beings here on earth for centuries in order to instill control, fear, and false worship. DO THE RESEARCH, PLEASE. You are going to answer to Almighty God for promoting false history and false worship. Mary herself, in her Magnificat that Luke recorded in his book in chapter 2, SAID SHE HERSELF NEEDED A SAVIOR. The Holy Spirit wrote through Paul in his letter to the Romans as he sat in his Roman prison, chapter 3 verse 23: "For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God." I'll pray you take what I have written seriously - as I have been researching and quoting Holy Scripture to the lost for over 50 years when the Holy Spirit opened my eyes and I fled from the man-made religion of roman catholicism.

One places their trust and faith in to whom they are praying, and kissing statues of said person, lighting candles to said person, putting money in a box next to the statue of said dead person. I was raised strict catholic south of L.A. in the 60s until I got saved and accepted Jesus as my personal Savior in 1973. NO one is to pray to anyone but the Father in Lord Jesus' Name - HE said this. This shows you do not know nor study God's Word - maybe the rewritten Vatican version which is heresy because it is rewriting the Word of God from the Old Testament and the New Testament scrolls that were written BEFORE 300AD Jesuit doctrine. The Holy Spirit had Paul write this in his first letter to Timothy - 1 Timothy 2:5-6= 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time... And here is what Lord Yeshua Ha'Mashiach said: “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. O You who hear prayer, to You all flesh will come.” (Psalm 65:1-2) “… Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24) “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:13-14) We are NOT to pray to dead people but only our Father in Heaven in Lord Jesus' Blessed Holy Name. Mary is dead. She didn't ascend as a co-matrix to her Son. She was a blessed vessel chosen to birth our Savior. She herself stated in Luke chapter 2 in her Magnificat that SHE HERSELF NEEDED A SAVIOR. So yes, catholics worship Mary, they pray to her, they idolize her, they have idolizing statues and beads - which is a Babylonian ritual the catholics took from the pagans - the Madonna and child - that is from Noah's great grandson Nimrod's wife and son - We were made to pray repitious prayers - the Hail Mary (Mary would be APPALLED that people were praying to her and treating her with worship and idolatry instead of her Son given all glory!) - people bloodying their knees crawling to man-made cathedrals and churches worshiping Mary as if she is the mediator to heal people, to save people, to get them out of Hell or man-made place called pergatory - there IS no such place - If you read the Holy Bible and studied God's Word - JESUS IS THE WORD - you'd know this, dear. Jesus's church of believers isn't built on PETER. Peter was the one whom the Holy Spirit chose to speak His Truth out of his mouth on the Mount of Transfiguration - that Jesus was the Christ, the only Son of the Living God. JESUS IS THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE. Jesus meant that the words of Truth that Peter spoke is what He was going to build His church on. So yeah, catholics, and some orthodox, Greek and Eastern, worship Mary as if she were queen of Heaven - also taken from Nimrod's wife and Babylonian paganism. Mary was a sinner. She wasn't a virgin after she gave birth to Jesus - Jesus had at least four half brothers and two half sisters - THAT'S in the Holy Bible - Jude, Josas, James, and Simon - Jesus' sisters' names aren't listed. I know a huge amount of what the man-made RCR is and why it was created and who created it. All the popes and bishops and cardinals and nuns and priests and followers of this religion kiss statues of Mary, bow down before it, worship it - that is worshiping - you know that, right? You need to read Exodus 20 and see what Almighty God told Moses to tell the children of Israel about worshiping idols. Then see what Jesus taught in the Gospels.

@@ronaldmiller673 I have a Messianic Jewish believer in Lord Jesus Christ in North Galilee and this gentleman may very well know a lot of history of Israel - living there, etc. - and I applaud him for his knowledge. I love history. I love Jesus. I'm an ex catholic saved - John chapter 3 - for over 50 years and I know a great deal about the Truth of God and His Word. It doesn't matter what a person who has lived in an area a long time knows or if the person has a degree in history or whatever. What matters is that a person needs to know the uncorrupted Word of God in the Holy Bible - not any man-made religion says but what GOD says. Not what the Vatican changed but what was written by Eusebius and Josephus Flavius and the disciples and the gentiles - Luke for one - and Paul and Isaiah, Jeremiah, Job, Ruth, Esther, David, Samuel, Moses, God Almighty Himself who wrote His Word in 66 books using the 40 men HE chose. Almighty God didn't create religion - MAN created religion because of ego and pride - pride - the sin Almighty God hates the most. Almighty God created FAITH IN HIM AND HIS SON - THE TRINITY. Considering the mosaic floor remnant of the Byzantine church has the Quinotaurus Cross of the Merovingi, it must date from the SEVENTH Century when they were in power in FRANCE.
