Paul - As you know, in the Kenjutsu kata (Basics of the Sword (表之太刀, Omote no Tachi) a samurai would be wearing kabuto, hence the need for maki-uchi. However, in the basics of sword drawing (表之居合, Omote-no Iai), as part of the Battojutsu curriculum, a samurai would not be wearing kabuto. That is the premise of it being a surprise attack, the need to draw quickly, and why we see kesa from "Jodan no Kamae", rather than from maki-uchi. I am wondering why you performed the Iai while wearing Kabuto? This is documented in Sugino Sensei and Otake Sensei's books on KSR.

You are correct. I was doing some experimenting once I was wearing kabuto. The film editor took the clips he thought worked best for the purpose or the video.
