Hi Inna - thanks for this wonderful list of books on Ukrainian history and culture. I know Serhii Plokhy is a fine writer. Back in 2015, I read the book “Frontline Ukraine” by Richard Sakwa. From what I knew it seemed a balanced, if bleak, analysis up to 2014. Published by I.B. Tauris. It may have a Russian slant - but it wasn’t obvious to me at the time. Slava Ukraine

I got to know of Ukraine's history through the books of Iaroslav Lebedynsky (French-Ukrainian historian) - I'm French. His books at the L'Harmattan publishing house are fantastic, he's worked hard to combat Soviet & Russian distortions/falsifications of history. I don't know if he's been translated in English though. I also have the French edition of "33-I: Holod. Narodna Knyha-Memorial" by Lidia Kovalenko & Volodymyr Maniak. It gave me nightmares.

Not bad list of these books about Ukraine but I would recommend other books about Ukraine which helped me to understand the current situation in that country more clearly: 1). Armies of Russia's War in Ukraine by Osprey Publishing; 2) Putin's War in Ukraine by Taras Kuzio; 3) War and Punishment by Mikhail Zygar.

I would advise you to stop reading russians' thoughts about Ukraine and Ukrainians. Ukrainians are capable of explaining their history and what they feel by themselves. You just need to start listening to them and accept what they say. Russians always like to talk about other countries instead of transforming their own

I became interested in Ukrainian history and culture after reading Red Famine about 5 years ago. I also received The Gates of Europe and The Russo-Ukrainian War for Christmas, along with A Message from Ukraine by President Zelensky, The Great Book of Ukraine, The Poet of Ukraine (about Taras Shevchenko), and Ukrainian Folktales. Two other books that I've enjoyed are Ukraine is Not Dead Yet, and You Don't Know What War Is, a diary of a girl from Kharkiv who turned 12 shortly before the invasion began. I am grateful for your book suggestions and for your KZbin channel! Дуже дякую!

I personally think that 'Voroshilovgrad' is not that interesting (maybe it is because I'm from Donbas), but 'Internat' by Serhii Zhadan is remarkable. I suggest to swap these books in the list, otherwise this list is great😃 Also, there is a book that will be published by HURI this year. Lesya Ukrainka 'Cassandra'. This book is absolutely amazing and it is a shame that there are so few translations of Lesya Ukrainka's books

Highly recommend: "The Making of Modern Ukraine" Yale University lectures by Timothy Snyder, on KZbin. 23 1-hour lectures broadcast from the classroom in the fall of 2022.

I sm in Kharkiv, my fourth time since May 2022. I have spent 270+ days in Ukraine since May 16 2022, first delivering supplies to frontline soldiers, and for ywi ninety day periods working as volunteer caregiver in the animal rescue clinic of Animal Rescue Kharkiv.
