Timothy Snyder uploaded his entire class on the history of Ukraine, and he talked about this song when he wrapped up the lecture. It was really beautiful, and I'm paraphrasing, but he talked about how it wasn't really a song about christmas, it was actually about the springtime. We think of the winter as an ending, and spring is a new beginning. So there's this song that we all think about as a winter song, winter being an ending, and it's actually about spring which is a beginning. So sometimes things that may seem like an ending (like the war threatening the future of Ukraine) are actually a beginning. It was really touching, and I think about it every time I hear this song now.

дуже дякую! Щасливого Різдва! 2023 hasn't been an easy year, but you've made it through. Congratulations on all you have achieved, especially considering all the setbacks you've had to overcome. I hope 2024 is a great year filled with many victories! Щедрик is a beautiful song and you sang it very well. A woman named Eileen has an amazing arrangement of it on here that is well worth listening to. Merry Christmas and happy holidays, Inna! Разом до перемоги! Слава Україні!

Thanks for educating us. That song to me, is what I most associate with Christmas. If you ask me, Christmas isn't Christmas unless you watch 'Die Hard' and hear 'Carol of the Bells' at least once.

Ščedrik - the text is in Ukrainian, but I think I understand a large part of the text even without a translator, because the words are very similar to Czech. A swallow flew in, she started chirping ... = Priletila lastivočka, stala sobi šebetati .... = Přiletěla vlaštovka, začala si štěbetat ... = ČESKY. Then the text is about lambs being born to the sheep (ovečce se narodily jehňátka) I wish you a very Happy Christmas from Czech Republic ! (In the Czech Republic, we celebrate Christmas between December 24 and 26).

Merry Christmas Inna! I know it will be hard. I just finished watching White Christmas which came out in 1954. You may probably know that the film begins in a war zone. I was thinking about you all as I watched the film and of my father who fought in Italy and was wounded in the invasion at Anzio. He recovered and fought until the war ended. Bless you!

Lovely singing and song, wow! Tonight I was at a Christmas party in Nevada, at a friend's house. Ten people were there. Someone asked for Christmas music, and I specifically asked for Shchedryk also known as "Carol of the Bells." So December 22nd, 2023, somewhere in America, people listened to Shchedryk. I mentioned that Shchedryk is a Ukrainian song, and I told the story of its origin. It felt good. So now more Americans know of Ukraine, and this song, and its story.

We learned it as Ukrainian Carol of the Bells, and I first learned it in Grade 7. We performed it every year thru Grade 12 at our our Xmas Concerts, & all our alumni were invited up to sing it with us! We were told that obviously the Ukrainian words were different, but we had no opportunity to find out more back in the pre-Internet days. I’m glad to hear the original song, but I do still enjoy the English version we learned for so many years. 💙🙏🏼💛🇺🇦🫡

Your singing voice might not be trained, but it is lovely. I started learning Ukrainian when I kept finding relatives with trees in Cyrillic alphabet; and it was easier to learn than to just keep cutting and pasting names to translate to roman characters.

I have to be honest, until recently, I didn't know that "Carol of the Bells" was originally from Ukraine. I would have never guessed that. If you were to ask me where I thought "Carol of the Bells" was from, my first guess would have been Germany since a lot of the well known Christmas music (Silent Night, Canon in D, O Tannenbaum) was from there. If not that, either UK, France, or Italy. But very interesting nonetheless, especially since I play piano/keyboards.

I'm glad you're greatful for the help but I think we should do more. I think we should change the way the system works so we can provide more help and faster. The goal is the save and protect Ukrainian lives, right now, and I think we're not doing it right. I think we should be able to switch our production to make armored vehicules and ammunitions or what ever is required both for ourselfs and for our allies. I think we should be able to convert any production lines into something that could serve the military at any time. We've been thinking, believing and acting as if all people are good for way too long that we can't change how we work quickly unless we were attacked directly and I think it's one of our weaknesses. We've been relying on the Americans for way too long that now that they're stuck, help has come to an almost complete halt. We need to be able to protect ourselfs better so when we're at peace, we can help other countries that are at war a lot better. The truth is that America is protecting the world but we also should be able to protect America in case anything happens. I don't think we've been doing that in the past as if our ally was indestructible. By making ourselfs (NATO) stronger and more independant, we'd make America stronger too. We're always going to be allies with them no matter what happens. Anyway, I'm just thinking outloud. Glory to Ukraine, it's military and it's wonderful people.

Yes, that’s true. Previously, Christmas had traditionally been celebrated on the 7th of January as many of Ukraine's Orthodox churches had historic connections with the russian Orthodox church, which celebrates Christmas on the 7th January. We don’t want to have any in common with russia 🙅🏻‍♀️

That certainly depends upon the family. Some families do most of their celebrating on Christmas Eve, and then they could have the person’s birthday on the 25th. But whenever Christmas is celebrated, it will be somebody’s birthday. And who better to share your birthday with than Jesus?
