Trying not to chicken out at Chicken Corners (and the wind tunnels)

A day trip to Chicken Corners and the Wind Tunnels west of Moab.
An easy trail by Moab Jeep trail standards. But still some great views and some interesting places to explore.
Although if you have a fear of heights or suffer vertigo you may want somebody else to drive it for you...

I believe those tunnels are known as "Catacomb rock". Love chicken corners !

It is, and the trail ( Catacomb Spur ) is a moderate level that goes for another near 7 miles south. Maybe not suitable for a full size, definitely need lockers on this one

Great video! I drove out here last year by myself in a rental jeep, got all the way to the last clearing and “chickened” out going down the last short path along the cliff to chicken corners cause I realized I had already burned thru almost my entire half case of water, and started feeling uneasy overheated and uneasy about being so far back myself. Still kicking myself for not finishing that last little bit 🤦🏻‍♂️. Amazing views tho!

Great job! The wind tunnels are very cool. Had our Jeep Grand Cherokee on CC several times. It's about the easiest trail during Easter Jeep Safari. Glad my Grand Cherokee wasn't any wider going through the rocks towards the end of the trail as you mentioned. The scenery is killer as is the whole area.

I did that whole trail maybe 15 years ago. The footpath is narrow and very exposed. If you keep your cool it isn't hard to make it onto that mesa beyond but other than other views of the river you don't gain much. Afterwards I couldn't help but keep thinking about what if I had slipped. From the beginning of the trail you get a good look up at the shade structure on Dead Horse Point. From Dead Horse Point looking back down the road and footpath don't look that spectacular. From the beginning of the foot path looking west you can see a rock wall coming up above the river. That is a very thin fin of rock at a gooseneck in the river, you can get a better veiw of that fin from Dead Horse Point. Cane Creek Road used to narrow considerably after you passed Hunter Canyon and that marked the beginning of needing good ground clearance but now the road has been graded considerably and is wider and more gradual and about any street vehicle could make it to the beginning of the climb to Hurrah Pass. And they have built a lot of new campgrounds out on that piece of widened road. However even with all the work on the road it is still rocky enough to not be comfortable. We drove out there a couple of weeks ago after some rain and that entire stretch of dirt road was a big muddy mess. I had not heard of the wind tunnels, I'll have to check those out another day. I had to come back and add this: Consider when you are standing at the beginning of that foot path you are on the "east" side of the Colorado River, about 2 miles south of Dead Horse Point state park as the crow flies, on the "west" side of the river, and about 1400 feet lower, but it would take almost 60 miles of driving to get there. When you are crossing over Hurrah Pass you are about 1 mile north of Anticline Overlook as the crow flies, and about 800 feet lower, but it would take almost 80 miles of driving to get there.

Yeah, the thing that keeps meaning frome going a round the corner is more men thinking "what if?" and worse case scenarios. I could probably do it if I had to, but there are a ton of other mesas to explore that don't have rough access.

This was a great trail!!! So beautiful and definitely a place to visit! I went with my Subaru on Christmas Eve and only ran into to other trucks. Definitely a great place to camp or spend the day.

I rode it from the bottom of Hurrah pass to the very end on a mountain bike alone in April 2016. It took almost the whole day, but I made a lot of stops to take photos. Truck and jeep drivers were amazed that I had gotten so far on a bike. The whole trail/road was easily ridable, the only segment where I walked my bike was the very end of the uphill to Hurrah pass on my way back.

I’ve been around the corner and out onto the mesa on a couple of occasions. Always wished I wasn’t wearing big cludgy motocross boots while doing it. Those definitely increase the odds of tripping over your own feet! 😂

Nice video. Did this last year and it became one of my favorites. You can always walk the very last part if needed-Still worth doing. My 4runner w 3” lift did great. I would be a bit cautious in AWD cars.

Every time I get there I start wandering down the trail but I can never bring myself to go around that corner. I wouldn't consider myself afraid of heights but that last little bit brings it out of me. You have to have balls of steel to edge around that tight corner.

I chickened out as well. When you look back along the cliff edge you can see it’s eroded underneath at least as far as the hiking trail which creeped me out even more. Fantastic scenery with Thelma & Louise point across the river.

Did this a while back in a VW Syncro. Did the final chicken corners and all. This video doesn't do respect to how scary those two little bends are. None the less, we didn't die so I guess it was a positive experience. I have a full size Ford E350 4x4 camper van now. Not sure I would do it in that vehicle. It was scary enough in the Syncro. The trail to chicken corners and the wind caves are awsome however, even if you chicken out and just walk the last couple hundred yards. We go every year to at least the top of Hurrah Pass. Nice spot to have lunch and admire the views. thanks for sharing this video. Brought back great memories.

I saw that memorial plaque too. Honestly, I don't think the person cares that it is technically "not allowed." I am curious to know more about what happened- does anyone know? Did this person pass in the MOAB area? Sad- R.I.P. Great ride in a SxS. Pretty easy up to Hurrah pass...in almost any truck- BOF or Unibody with only 1-2 mildly tricky spots. Stop at Hurrah pass if you don't want rock damage- gets very bumpy, even in the SxS we were bouncing a lot. Great views along the way though.

Fun trail. I have a built up Land Cruiser, but I still like to go do the scenic, easy trails in Moab sometimes. I'm lucky I live here in Utah, but if you're making one trip to Moab in your life, I think this is a good trail to start out on.

Boy-O-Boy I tell you what, those views are stunning. Didn't find out until my last journey slash adventure where spent practically the whole time exploring the lower half of Utah how beautiful it is there. Up until then was either in the mountains mostly or down by the sea. Bottom line: I had no idea what an amazing place the desert like areas are. Appreciate you pointing them out so well.

I have been getting my stock Forester over Hurrah for the past several years. The spot I've chickened-out on is 5:20 in your video wear the white pickup bangs heck out of it's rear bumper. Of course, heading away from Hurrah is the opposite direction. So I'd have to climb my Forester up that couple of steps, then around to the right the road goes up into steep sand. I wasn't sure I could drive through that sand without getting stuck, and I didn't want to block the road, so Basecamp is as far as I'm willing to go.

Hello, my wife and I have a trip planned to explore Utah for the first week of October. We have a very similar setup to your truck and tent and are wondering what places you would recommend? Last year we did Colorado and the highlight of our trip was Imogene pass. We lean towards less crowded nature with epic scenery over "Tourist Traps" although we will be spending some time is Zion. We have over a week and would love any feedback or advice you have. Planned on starting in around Moab and working our way from there.

Hard to say considering there is so much. The only reccomendation I could say is look at the areas surrounding each of the National Parks. The places just outside their boundaries are also fantastic, have way less people, and dirt roads and ATV tracks are plentiful.

A small suggestion: I wish you would take just a little more time with the description of where the trail is and how to get there (this is the case for most of your videos.) I know you think you are being clear, but you always seem rush though that part in order to get to the journey itself. I can usually figure it out, but generally have to dig out my maps and do a search to really find the area.

I just did Kane Creek…. It’s not difficult at the beginning but about a mile before the creek it gets pretty rough. I think it has a lot to do with the trail deteriorating in some spots and a couple tight spots. I hope BLM doesn’t let that one go.

Generally really good. My gas mileage is noticeably better and I haven't been camping anywhere where I wished I had it back. One drawback is I don't have 100lbs over the rear axle anymore. Suddenly I remember I'm driving a pickup truck again without that extra weight for traction. The rear end seems so much more "bouncy" .

IS there enough clearance for a stock Honda CRV? ~8" FYI I drove it on Potash Road without any issue

I think so. It's definately harder than the Potash road. You'll have to maneuver through the rocky bits so you don't hit the big rocks. But if you think through what you're doing you coax get a CRV through. The good thing here is if you mess up you might hear a thunk but it won't roll you over or tear a hole in the car.
