Prior to 2000 you could smoke everywhere. Grocery stores, hospitals, airplanes. In the 90s we hung out at McDonald's just because we could smoke there and the mall too. Smoking was banned for high school students by 1990 in most areas. Before that high schools had teacher and student smoking areas.

The book Vincent was reading on the toilet in the restaurant and at Butch's apartment was 'Modesty Blaise', a 1965 novel about the title character who was a British Intelligence agent, a sort of female James Bond. Vincent was likely in the can so much because he suffered from OIC, opioid induced constipation, due to his heroin habit. 'Modesty Blaise' was first introduced as a graphic novel character in 1963. Such comics were often published in magazines printed on cheap paper, referred to as 'pulp' magazines, making the beautiful spy's story... 'pulp fiction'. So even though Vincent was reading the hardback version, the character first came to light as a pulp fiction subject. And pulp magazines were a common source of reading in one particular location -- the john. So, the scenes where Vincent is reading a novel about a pulp fiction character are basically where the film gets its name! Gotta love QT's Easter eggs!

Yes Uma Thurman is in fact the main character Beatrix Kiddo, aka The Bride, from Kill Bill. In fact she and Tarantino worked out a lot of the basic plot line and character development of The Bride while making this movie.

The unanswered question is what gives off the golden glow in the case? Speculations run from gold bars to a holy relic. If you watch closely, when the bullets missed, you will see a gold glow in the air, and they felt like God saved them. My vote is holy relic.
@GullibleTarget
@GullibleTarget Жыл бұрын
My vote is drugs/addiction/greed. To addicts, be they like Vincent or some street-junkie drugs is like materialised 'god'. Doesn't matter what drug. Something that will give you momentarily bliss and 'salvation' but ultimately...it will steal your soul and will hurt everyone around you. You will steal, lie and kill for it. Which is why the code to the lock is 666; the mark of the beast. An anti christ who pretends to come as a savior but will destroy your immortal soul. That's why Jules got out of the business. Drugs brought him money but it turned him into a killer, thinking he was justified in being one because he killed people who messed up drug or gambling deals. Killing in the name of the antichrist in the suitcase: addiction. Death on a toilet is also biblical. Reminds be of the biblical demon called belphagore. A demon that thrived on gluttony, indulgence and was constantly constipated with sin, defecating for eternity. The imagery of belphagor is echoed in Vincent dying on the can because he was constipated because of the heroin he took.

0:19 Here in Austria smoking in restaurants was totally normal until 2019. Then, for elusive reasons, it was governmentally banned, which led to a massive decline in the number of visitors, because lots of people, me included, weren't willing to dine or drink out any more. Due to the vast losses in sales restaurants and bars had to be shut down forever one after the other. It was an economic and cultural disaster.

Woohoo, one of my fave movies! Thank you for keeping at least some of *that* scene in- so many reactors dont, or keep a tiny bit & look super uncomfortable, lol. The backstory ive heard is that Jimmy and Jules go way back, are good friends, and Jimmy even got Jules out of a tight spot before. Despite the fact that Jimmy seemingly lives a normal life now, he didnt always, and he and Jules see eachother as equals - i mean theres obviously trust there if he goes there and tells him "i got a dead body in the car and i need your help". So bc they know eachother, Jimmy immediately realizes that Jules is trying to "Jimmy" him, as hes possibly done in the past, and heads him off with a certain type of language. Jules doesnt take it as disrepect bc he knkws Jimmy doesnt mean it in a disrespectful or anti-racial way: he's using the word bc hes pissed, that theres a dead body and a bloody car in his garage and Jules is tryimg to bs him about coffee ffs. So he's basically saying "cut the crap, do what you gotta do and go". And he's using the language of gangsters bc he used to run in those circles - theyre criminals, not Starbucks baristas. But like i said, Jules gets it which is why he's not offended. Anyway thats just some backstoy/my take on it. Great reaction as usual!

When Mr Samuel L. auditioned for this, he walked into the room with a burger and a drink, was eating and drinking both. They'd ask him questions, and he'd just stare at them menacingly as he kept eating and drinking.
@merkitten953
@merkitten953 Жыл бұрын
You neglected to mention that the reason he stared menacingly was he'd been called back for a 2nd interview- then Tarantino was late & kept him waiting, so when he did get there, Jackson was in a bad mood. The glares were real, and he was in a fuck it mood so he just kept eating his burger and taking sips of his drink thru the audition. Tarantino liked it and put it in the movie.

The bible verse is made up. Marvin worked for Marcellus and was a plant in their group which is why Vince and Jules didn't kill him. Which also makes his accidental death more of a shame. Mia and Vince did not win the trophy, they stole it. That part was edited out for length. The gun in Butch's kitchen was Marcellus' who left it there to get coffee and donuts. Butch seeing Marcellus walk in front of his car is an homage to the same scene in Psycho. And I'm sure everyone else will tell you why Vince is in the bathroom all the time.
