this is probably my favorite movie. i love brazil and brazilian music and film and history and culture. this is just such a beautifully shot and edited film, and such a tragic story that really transcends the exact circumstances of the film to say something about settler societies and capitalism as a whole. how they prop up the most violent and ruthless aspects of ourselves and leave communities isolated and exploited with little regard for innocent life. just truly a tour de force.

I love the juxstapasition between Simon's dad not being willing to bail him out of jail a second time because of his reputation but Mal went out of his way to find him just because he's part of his crew.

I hate defending River and Simon's parents, but I think they probably know that River is screwed. I think the only explanation for their dismissive behavior is that they're just afraid of the power of the Alliance. I think they let their daughter go off to that academy, and they lost her, and now they're afraid of losing their son; and they're afraid of admitting to themselves that it happened.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who disliked the sister. The way she never stuck up for Elphaba was despicable.

glad you guys liked it😍, I loved it and watched it like 8 times🩷💚, going from the play for me to seeing the movie when it dropped right away! Jon did a great job and the cast. My fav songs is obv defying gravity and always and nothing could top, popular, what is this feeling and so on, the affair and the noises will always😳. The way the governor treats elphaba🙄 deserves and always since I first saw the worst. Elphaba my fav deserves great and nothing but greatness cant wait for part 2😍

Lol "I'm Not That Girl" is literally Elphaba talking about her NOT going after Fiyero...she's not the one that's a bad friend in this story. Elphaba is probably the best person in the entire story! Glinda is the one with no backbone and an obsession with being popular & liked by everyone, and only doing things that strengthen that popularity. Lol wait until your daughter finds out (I DON'T THINK THIS IS A SPOILER, JUST REWATCH IT LOL) it's a love triangle where all 3 of them like each other, but Elphaba is the prize that Fiyero AND Glinda want the most

One of dearest friend's is a 6'1 black woman who married to a 5'8 white dude. We call them "Kip & LaFawnduh." To be fair, it was her dad who noticed this dynamic! They also met online in a chat room for anime enthusiasts, so this nickname does work in their situation. It is now their regular Halloween costumes and last year she dressed up as Kip and her husband was LaFawnduh. It was amazing!

I know this won’t be a spoiler because of how far you’ve gotten watching the show by the time I’ve watched this episode, but I think the shepherd’s doubt about belonging on the ship is because (based on his knowledge of things like big criminals, weapons, and law enforcement officers), he’s had a past that he’s trying to put behind him.

This is one of those shows where the acting and writing makes the *meh* special effects easier to swallow, hehe. I love Firefly and the followup movie, Serenity. Thanks for the reactions, and your insight and opinions, Ms. India.

The Captain wasn't selfish for leaving Simon and River. He was making a decision based on the greatest need/priority. Two people lost in the hills somewhere, supposedly taken by hillfolk who want their services. First, there was no way to know how long it would take to find them, and second, they should have been safe for however long it took to go back and get them. He certainly couldn't have predicted that the hillfolk would decide to have a witch burning! Simon and River could wait until they had time to go collect them. Shepherd Book was shot and dying. High priority - get him medical attention, and fast! This was a triage situation, NOT a matter of the Captain's pride or selfishness. Book needed treatment, and fast. Mal even swallowed his pride and his distrust of the Alliance to go to the closest medical facilities, in order to save the life of one of his crew who was in immediate peril, putting himself in Alliance control, however briefly, to save a man's life. That's leadership, not selfishness. This episode went from comedic to tragic very quickly, and then we add in the fundamentalist hillfolk who, as you rightly pointed out, shouldn't consider themselves godly if they're talking about burning people alive! And River sealed her fate when she basically revealed that the leader had helped unalive the previous leader in order to take control. Yowza!

Oh boy! So---was Zac Efron too young to recognize as "baby Simon"? 😊 And the eternal question: Who is Shepard Book, really?
