Often developers deliberately not just let old houses decay but strip out features for sale and wait until it has to be pulled down so they can 'dob and dab' a new slum in its place. A real crime. On another note the number of times vandals smash their way through a premises with no thought is stunning. I saw a photo of a control panel in an abandoned factory with about £2000 worth of switches, connectors and meters on it and someone had methodically smashed every one. Moronic in the extreme.

Trouble is with equipment that's been made for a specific task is it has to be tested and refurbished hence making it financially unrealistic, just cheaper to buy new.

Nice Video. The problem with places like this, is when they are 'Listed' it means even though they might be able to be bought for a reasonable price, they cost a fortune to fix up to the allowable standards, and those standards often limit what can be done to the building; so then no one wants to buy it. Here, some of the damage is probably done by people stealing copper and lead flashing from the roof, pipes and boilers inside which they can make money from not caring about the damage they do to make that quick money. So as screwed up as it sounds, the house would have probably been sold and in use today it it were not for that 'Protected' Listing.

Can people like us chip in like we buy together and have it restored, to keep it as heritage so the public to can see it in mint condition. I might be dreaming but it's an idea. Our names would be on a heritage ownership listing and it would save the building if it was worth it. Just an idea.

I think you are correct , as I,ve been told dealing with British heritage is a nightmare they just drag their feet ,I.e. nothing gets done without their permission, which can take a lifetime,no wonder the yank who bought one in another video of yours has done diddly squat with the place ,personally I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole, purely due to the aforementioned assholes.

So true. The owner of one I explored in Wales had "seeded decay" by making the roof leak. We reported it to the local council who then made him take measures to ensure the roof was put back to a water tight state. The surveyor I spoke to from the council told me that it's common for unscrupulous owners to do this because once it falls down "naturally" they can then sell the land.

It's hard to believe it could have got into such a state from just a decade of neglect, even with water ingress. I wonder if it had serious structural problems anyway, causing it to be abandoned.

I always feel sad seeing derelict buildings as well! It was heartbreaking when many terraced streets were demolished wholesale as part of development and improvements. I used to look in at the rooms and actually cry seeing wallpaper flapping in the wind; mantelpieces and empty grates with cold ashes, and visualise the previous life, all the happy times, sad times. All gone. 😔

Criminal neglect. As others have said the mystery car looks like a Triumph, the small lift would have been a dumb waiter. The stone slab may have been a keeping slab, the mass of stone stays cool in a cellar and were used for keeping meat on. Even small houses had them in the cellar. The round holes with the square holes & hatches look like flues for boilers. The boiler flue may have been connected to the round holes and the square ones used for chimney cleaning and to remove ash & soot that collected at the bottom of the flue. They would need blocking off otherwise the flue wouldn't draw.

Another great video! Looking at the house on street view is interesting. In 2009 it looks like its in the process of being moved out of, there's a skip in the drive but the house looks sound. 2011 there's a van in the drive, the house is boarded up but the wall on the street appears to have been cleaned. Then 2021 is as you found it. The conservatory is still there in 2011.

What an amazing place! I've driven past that plot a lot over the years and never realised it was there. There are some potentially valuable car spares there - the Jaguar XJS bits particularly. Made my heart sink seeing the Mini British Open Classic - very few of those left now from a limited run of 1000 (I think). I bet the fabric electric sunroof has long gone. The whole plot has probably been landbanked - a greedy developer buys the estate cheap, then leaves it to rot - and at the mercy of the vandals - then when the time is right, they'll build heap of overpriced, unaffordable houses there. So sad to see, but becoming a common thing now. Thanks for another fascinating video, Martin.

Hi Martin and Colin. Horncliffe Mansion! truly bizarre! If the roof tiles were removed as soon as the house was vacated, for re- use, I think that would be enough to wreak the whole structure so quickly. Once, a handsome building. Had to watch again, just something about these big homes that has a fascination factor. No matter where you travel, this tendency to build huge homes so often has the fate of this one. While it is sad, they were often built when little or no income tax existed,a good example by me is a Vanderbilt Mansion. Before income tax,the family literally possessed more cash than the federal government. Great job guys!

Enjoyed that, it was a similar story with two local places (Wilmslow/Alderley Edge), one a pub called the County hotel and the other an old house converted to a nightclub called yesterdays, The County also closed in 2009 and was fine, if a little scruffy and now not far as bad as this. I think a secure building in good condition will last a fairly long time, but older ones that get vandalised/pillaged have no chance. I did think that the car bit may have had something to do with banger racing as Jags were used as Bangers/Bombers and the Minis converted to Mini Stox. used to play as a kid in a Jag scrapyard in Heald Green and nick bits for dens we made in the old RAF base near there, they have a distinctive aroma when decomposing !

Oh man that is really sad. Very strange how badly the house has deteriorated in 10 years. The roof looks to be fairly intact, if it were gone or badly damaged I could understand floors falling in such a short time. For it to be in such a state while also being fairly well protected from the weather is mysterious. Or is the roof actually worse than it appears from the images we see here? Once the home of a wealthy family, the venue for many wedding parties and now this, paint thrown at it by scumbags and left to fall down and be lost forever. I'll try to skip over the old folks home part, there have been too many cash grab operations to assume that phase of it's life was something to be proud of. Thanks for posting this. Like many I think this video has made me sad and also left me feeling helpless at being unable to do something to save such a beautiful property. Truth be told it probably has a negative value now.

When we were kids the derelict bomb sites were our adventure playgrounds. We used to also play in Hough End Hall Chorlton, which I believe has now been restored. In Launceston there used to be a row of listed convict built cottages. The owner deliberately left them unsecured and just waited until the dereliction made them fall down and eventually was allowed to bull doze them. Another great vid

Hi Martin. I hope you are well. I was just in manchester today and heard that a wooden door under the canal had been opened. I realised that you had previously spoken about it and where it was situated. Anm arrow denoted its position. I couldnt believe it but its been opened and water is now flowing down it. Its amazing and something you may of seen yourself. But if not i thought id let you know and its well worth a look. Martin.

Hi there... I happened across your channel by accident when your recent wander up at Deeply Vale was thrown up by my KZbin feed. Incidentally you said I think in that video that you couldn't work out where the festival was staged - it's a lot of years since I went to the festival and we lived in Ramsbottom at the time so we walked up (it was quite a long way!) to see Steve Hillage who was playing. Where the stage was situated I seem to recall that the first building on your video (with the water course running through it) was visible from the seating area away to our right just a hundred yards or so. And whilst on derelict mills like those up at Deeply, have you never wandered through the remains of the mill near Greenmount? Dead easy access and it's been there more years than I can remember - I went to school in Tottington and walked past the remains almost daily plus our cross country route ran right by the lodges associated with it. If you want a location give me a shout and I'll bung you a pin over. Interesting too to see your video on the canal and the "plug hole" - I worked for years at the BBC on Oxford Road and I used to walk down past the back of the Hacienda to the big wharf or dock or whatever it was at the Deansgate end of that canal. I can also remember before the Hacienda when the building was a big chandlers with a huge boat showroom and even a branch of a SCUBA diving shop on the premises. So over to Horncliffe Manor. I explored this place back in 2012 so I was appalled to see how much it has deteriorated in the few years since. We were able to explore pretty much everywhere with no dodgy floors or gaping voids. My photos and a full exploration report can be seen via the link below. I hope it interests you. www.jarrelook.co.uk/Urbex/Horncliffe%20Mansion/Horncliffe_Mansion.htm Best wishes...

So sad to see a building like this go to rack and ruin. I also went to a wedding there about 15 years ago. I remember the ceremony in an upstairs room and the beautiful staircase. I just remember the place being so elegant and cared for, its tragic how it looks now. Yes I certainly didn't see any evidence of abandoned cars then at all. The developer /owner is probably waiting for the point of no return as to the state of the place. I wonder how many boxy houses you can get on the site! Thanks Martin and Connor for going so I don't have to but please stay safe . That is one scary Hoover..I was terrified 😂

My guess is that it was badly maintained towards the end, almost the start of its ruin, then when abandoned, the lack of maintenance quickly allowed water & weather inside, & those features already a bit unstable, decayed rather quickly. this gives it an accelerated decay look. Just a guess of course.

My wife had her prom here just before it closed, I remember the conservatory was set up for the disco. It used to be one of the main wedding venues in the valley. I had several friends who worked there. It was set on fire not to long ago - the roof fell in during the fire so it’s now even more of a mess.

Hi Martin, Isn't this house an amazing place have been there a number of times with some mates. It's know locally as "Jag mansion" for obvious reason. Isn't it tragic the vandalism that has been done, back in 2016 it was lived in by some homeless men who almost lost their lives when they made a fire in one of the fireplaces which got out of control luckily fire crews were called and put the blaze out. Most of the Oak panels, Door casings and ornate plasterwork has been removed and saved by English Heritage. As you said martin apparently its open to offers around £500.000 and there must be at least one ghost living there.

Perhaps the owner who went into liquidation couldn't afford the upkeep. It could have been starting to rot while they were there and had to vacate on Health and Safety grounds. As you say, 10 years is a short time for it to become so bad so perhaps the rot had started while they were there! I love the stone work at the front and the old photos of it in its prime.

Hi mate. Just thought I'd give you a suggestion for a couple of places to explore! The first one is the Monsal Trail in the Millers Dale area. The former main line from Manchester Central to Derby through the Peak District and the second one is the Middlewood way. The old line from Marple to Macclesfield. Would be great if you could do a video on those two! Enjoy... Regards... Bren.

Brilliant place, certainly very dodgy within the main building. The floors being down no doubt takes a lot of the structural integrity away from the main walls. Don't blame you for exploring it though, very worth it. I have seen a few videos from there but wasn't aware of the wall painting. I really wish that was able to be preserved. Depending on its history could well be a museum piece. The car graveyard is very strange, there are lots of theories regarding it, but nothing concrete. fascinating place!

Same challenges here in Australia although we don’t have properties quite as old.Historic homesteads fall into disrepair as many are in the bush and there’s just no money around to restore them ; and the detail required for Heritage Status is often unachievable by general trades people ;.specialists are rare and expensive and remote locations don’t help.
