This was an old train yard for a rr that only served Mc Donald steel. Thats why the tower office is there. They ran east from here over to another mill, I think, near Struthers or possbly Ohio Jct. Also the bigger building was there engine house.

You should always go down the steps of a locomotive backwards, like your climbing down a ladder! Safety first, or you might end up with a face full of ballast! LOL!

So that’s what became of some of Burlington Northern’s old E units that used to run on the (now) Metra BNSF commuter rail line between Chicago and Aurora. A shame.

Only some of them. The ones here were originally sold for a planned Commuter Service in Nashville. By the time it was ready to begin operations some much newer surplus Amtrak F40's were available thus making these redundant. When I lived in Nashville I remember seeing them stored stored near Downtown Nashville.

At 3:27 when they guys climb the stairs one says the cabin perhaps is a room used for switching. It is actually a weighing station/office...to weigh each freight car....common on all freight yards around the world, even here where I am in Australia.

This is a great video but I would like to say something to you and others, Don’t assume that you can be able to “hear and react” faster than a train at 5 mph, these locomotive ARE quiet, especially if you back is turned to them, I work with these machine and I Am Not Kidding when I say that these things scare the ABSOLUTE hell out of me, if anyone is working on or near tracks, keep on looking every few second, This will save yours and others lives, Please be safe everyone. I don’t want to discourage people from enjoying trains but PLEASE just be sure to always respect the rails and you can enjoy with your hearts content, I am advising you on being near tracks, nothing more Have an awesome day

Many good points here, however this yard is rarely active and mainly is just storage. Most of the locomotives don’t run as well

Of all the loco's at the yard I would like to see preserved, it'd have to be one of the BN Commuter E9's. Despite many of them being preserved the only one I can think of that's still somewhat in better condition and still in BN colors is 9912 (Don't remind me, I know far more about that specific unit's ''history'' than any sane man should. Just don't.) but ever since IRM repainted their unit into CBQ colors, as well as the other preserved units being repainted it sucks that there isn't any running examples of them just to preserve as a piece of commuter rail heritage. While I doubt all 4 of the units at Macdonald can be salvaged, hopefully whatever one is in the best condition can be revived using donor parts from the other units and kept as a sort of passenger heritage unit. That and I just think the BN cowl unit livery is cool.

Such a sad video to see all these locomotives just rusting away and not being really useful :'( and you bringing up that UP somtimes shows up in Ohio well it was about 2 weeks, maybe a month ago in my small little town in Kentucky I saw a Canadian Pacific locomotive pulling freight threw my town. I was so shocked as I had never seen that railroad in person only online and pictures. Sadly it had to be the day I didn't have my camera on me lol

Sometimes locomotive frames rust out or crack, just likk cars and trucks, then they're only good for parts and scrap. It's surprising to see all this stuff sitting around rather than turned into cash. There's a lot of good scrap metal.

w.c.l. F-45 should go up North to Green Bay, and the National Railroad Museum, because wcl serviced them here at the 100 year old Roundhouse of the C&NW. AND...Repaired for Mainline Excursions. Especially for the G.B. PACKERS and the Cheese Head fans, going South to the Chicago Bears 🐻 🐻‍❄. Because the PACKERS don't have Amtrak, and they are the Oldest team in the N.F.L. BUT...The Very Last passenger train was 50 years ago, with the C&NW "400" on Friday, April 30, 1971.

We need those B.N. EMD. E9A up North in Green Bay, for the National Railroad Museum, BUT!.....REPAINTED for the C&NW "400", ...AND...THE MILWAUKEE ROAD "HIAWATHA ", as two of the most World 🌎 Famous HIGH SPEED TRAINS 🚄 that used to race against each between Chicago and Milwaukee, then North to G.B. with the CNW 400 North to Green Bay and Escanaba and Marquette. And also the Milwaukee Road "CHIPPEWA" North also to G.B. when they would pass over each other at TAVIL JUNCTION, And North to Iron Mountain, to Ontonogan, and also to Houghton and Hancock with trackage rights on SOO LINE in the Keeweenaw Peninsula ; But sadly hundreds of miles of tracks were ripped off and made into nature trail for bicycles 🚲 🚲 , and forcing travelers to either drive 🚗 cars. Take busses, or else fly in airplane 🛫 ✈. And miss all the beautiful scenery of the Northwoods in the verdant pine tree 🌲 forests of the Upper Peninsula, and create new independent shortline Railroads that also used Steamers for Excursions. Happily, and Hopefully in the Near Future when gas and oil 🛢 suddenly disappear, then all the different agencies will see the vital need to rebuild the New Railroad tracks with concrete crossties and welded rails !!!!! HI IN April 2023A.D.
