Great to see that plant now, not polluting anymore. I worked in the engineering team located just below the Carbo works, maintaining the opencast screens. The stream that ran past the carbo works regularly ran totally brown from this crappy plant. Late 70`s.

Engineering NZ webpage has a good write up on the history and what happened to it. Apparently it had two explosions over the years and a fire, combined with the liquidation of the company meaning the site was never properly remediated

That metal walkway sheeting you can see at about the 7:04 marks looks like Marston Mat. This was produced in WW2 in the millions in order to rapidly make airfields. Post war is was then sold of as surplus and ended up in all kinds of engineering projects etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marston_Mat

Dude you shouldn't do that stuff alone. That is so risky and dangerous

If nobody did anything risky nothing would be discovered and nobody would learn anything. When your young you have to take risks to gain skills, experience and knowledge. capiche?

Honestly it’s insane you can be fined $300 for not picking up your dog poo when failed corporations can just walk away from a huge operation like this. I know what nature would reclaim faster, and it sure as shit isn’t the latter. I get it’s different/terrible comparison, doesn’t make it any less cooked

Also the tall building with the stacks that you were in was the Lurgi Retort Building. The place was used to turn low grade coal into carbon briquettes.
