The amount of nostalgia I get from just seeing this video. As you guys walked around I can still imagine how loud and busy it was. Playing in the shallow pool and then sitting in the cafe above the pool after. Or going into the play area and everything being all dirty. But to me it just seems like a cool but sad thing seeing your childhood leisure centre been abandoned.
@nickybrown4048 Жыл бұрын
I've just calculated the number of lengths I would of done in that pool as I was in the swimming club there, about 290,000 lengths through my teens. That is mind blowing - makes me feel really emotional watching that, so many memories around that pool. First medals won, first kisses, friends made - how can a building represent so much. Places of fun, laughter and achievement are priceless. Sad that it's gone.

Grew up at that place. Upstairs above pool was the gym. Where the sweet machines were was the cables area, first mirrored room was the free weights, second mirrored with the stage was cardio and weight machines (some cardio was on stage). Room with windows and door to bridge over pool was cardio. Yes that is the spin studio, behind the blacked out bits is the sports hall so occasionally shuttlecocks used to hit the window and lights would flicker on and off so was annoying. Used to go in the ball pit 20 years ago now 😅 A new centre was built down the road and this one was retired. Was swimming there up until 2019/20.

So sad to see this place in such a state. I swam in all 3 of the pools here over the years. The door you came in is the old indoor pool and it has a boiler room accessed from the road the ivy leaf club is on. The pool itself was a sloped with a baby section leading to the 25m swim lane section, then to the diving bit. Which had a diving board until health and safety said that was to much fun and removed it. They closed it when the built the new pool with the slides and kids bit. And for those of you that are really old the outdoor pool is under the carpark on the new swimming pool side. The council closed it as it was too costly to run being such an old building. The new leisure centre is at braywick. Although new its not got the same appeal as this place had. Soon it will be 400 plus flats 🤨

Same. Moved away years ago, I'm only a few miles away now but went back a couple of years ago for a visit and the whole town seemed totally dead. It was midweek in the winter but there was a real sense of decline, just closed units and charity shops. I'd be in and around town so many weekends, walking from Cookham Road area all the way in just to have a wander and it was always heaving, even on Sundays. Popped into The Bear for food for the first time ever (I moved away literally on my 18th). Took a look around, got a McDonalds and ate it in the car instead.

I'm just astonished! I'm sat here, watching this with my parents, as you walked into the Dance Studio that I used to do ballet classes in I found myself very emotional! The main gymnasium with all of the seating is where I performed in Dance Shows, the swimming pool is where I learnt to swim! So many birthday parties; it's maddening that it's ended up in this state, but yet it could have been so easily restored!

@@dewester5394 it's all boarded up but the front entrance has glass behind the boards. Get a screwdriver set, take off the board. Once screws are loosened, you need to pull hard to rip the board off, don't be gentle. Behind should be a glass window and you smash it with a brick or something. Very left bottom corner one on front entrance my friends did. So try the bottom left board and the window should already be broken behind it, probably reboarded though. Be careful not to cut yourself on the glass, crawl in, and then you're in. They reboard it every day so be careful they don't board you in lol. @18:12 I think that is the depth markings for the original swimming pool. The original pool was concreted in in early 1990's and the new pool built on the side. The original pool was in the very large hall to the right of the entrance. It had a diving board if i recall correctly. I believe they had issues with the way the pool had been constructed so thats why they got rid of it.

That's what I found really confusing. They made that new café and invested in the gym and just a few years later they'd leave the place. Yes the new Braywick leisure centre is better in every way but those investments in the Magnet don't seem great now that it's going to get knocked down.

What annoys me is the new one is apparently in Braywick and therefore not nearly as accessible for most people. We used to go as kids and sometimes walked all the way from Furze Platt/Cookham Road area if parents couldn't give us a lift. Most buses stopped right outside as well. Braywick's the other side of the dual carriageway/high street. It would have to be phenomenally good to justify the move. I suppose it's more accessible for people coming from out of town, I guess.
