Exploring American Camp Island in Georgian Bay.

Here is another great paddling experience in Georgian Bay and it is an easy drive from Toronto. American Camp island is a large flat granite island surrounded by hundreds of other little islands! It is very peaceful and quiet plus there are many great places to swim and snorkel. Excellent place for a picnic but bring some kind of shelter for shade as it can get pretty hot out there on a summer day! Getting out the the island is very safe since it is protected from wind and waves by all the smaller islands. You could do this in a canoe not just a kayak.....but always check weather conditions conditions before you head out. Check it out!!!

The island had been in my family since c. 1900 (My family’s cottage is one of the closest houses.) I spent many a summer there and due to my wife’s illness have not been able to travel back for some time now. So I really enjoyed getting to see your video of it. My dad gave it to the land trust in 2004/5.

Story goes that a Sir Douglas Alexander (or his brother Bert) bought the islands (chain of them) from the Crown in the late 1800's early 1900's. The islands including American Camp thereafter called the Alexanders. Sir Douglas (British) was married to a Canadian but they resided in NY State, thus that particular island in the chain referred to by others in the area as "The Americans' Camp" as they & other locals in the area used it extensively mainly for day tripping & Picknicks from their cottages in the immediate area.... It had been used by Native North Americans for millennia, a stopover on the canoe trade routes, for fishing & berry picking.

great video and beautiful island. I wish I could camp there for a few days. However, when I check it out on Ontario crownland atlas, it appears to be private land. Do you know if it is public or private? maybe Crownland atlas is inaccurate about this island? Thanks.

Hi thanks for watching my video! This island is owned by GBLT (Georgian Bay Land Trust)..... however they allow the public to use it on a daily basis no overnight camping allowed. They patrol the island regularly to make sure no one is camping or lighting fires and that there are not too many people on the island. The only time I would avoid it is on a long weekend when there may be too many people. I hope you have time to check it out this summer it’s a great place! Check out gblt.org for more details.👍
