I grew up in Amsterdam and left after I graduated HS. You should have seen it back when I was young. It was an awesome city with a great Main Street. We had lots of old movie theaters and neighborhood schools . Today , it is so run down. it’s a mess in my opinion.

You are wrong on the population; it is less than 17,000 and yes this is a correct number. There are also more than twice as many sex offenders than the national average. there is much more. The poverty rate is 26.5 percent. You are just so wrong on everything. Former Mayor Ann Thane stated "Amsterdam is in a real depression. It is not like it was a sudden thing it was a long and slow slide into a real depression" That statute on the bridge cost half a million dollars to buy and install, all the while the city ran a more than million-dollar deficit each year and an ongoing debt of more than 10 million dollars. The tax rate is the highest in NYS outside of NYC.

@ 3:30 That's what we call one of those "fake stores", there's a basic window display but the place is never really open and does no business. Quite common in upstate New York. The fake display just makes the street look less blighted. There may still be occupied apartments upstairs.

The industrial complex in the beginning of the video was the Bigalow-Sanford carpet manufacturing complex until the mid 1950's. Later it was owned by Coleco which made toys. That business went out of business in the late 1980's. I walked through the area in 2019 and noticed a few new business, like Executive, have moved into these buildings. With that in mind, I think the future in Amsterdam is slowly getting brighter. In that building complex, there is even a water jet cutting shop.
