That the electric is still on and the place is being kept clean ( looks like no dust anywhere aside from the flies in the windowsills in back of the pulpit) I’d say this place is not abandoned in the way we think of abandoned. Somebody is lovingly caring for this place even if it’s not currently being used which is very sad. Such a gem and I’m so glad I got to see its amazing beauty.

This is both lovely and sad. I’m from a Mennonite family. Dad’s family were KS farmers and their little Mennonite church was much like this one: small, simple, in the middle of nowhere. However, they’re more similar to the Amish in that their church had nothing fancy or decorative about it, so no stained glass or fancy altar. But otherwise, this could be any one of the churches I attended growing up. I’m only in my mid-40’s, so it’s disconcerting to see a church like this abandoned, left to KZbin explorers who consider it “cool” and “vintage”, as if from centuries ago. There’s something deeply sad to see this part of American culture and heritage abandoned. But it is a lovely little church. Just beautiful.

Reverend J. D. Bothne was a Lutheran pastor active in the late 19th century, particularly in North Dakota. He succeeded Reverend Nils Forde, a notable missionary among the Lutherans of the Sheyenne Valley. On February 22, 1883, Reverend Bothne presided over the organization of the East Prairie congregation, which later became the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in a schoolhouse southwest of Fingal, North Dakota. Under his leadership, Haakon Nilson donated two acres of land for a church site and graveyard. The congregation resolved to build a church building in 1895, with the cornerstone laid on October 19, 1896. Reverend Bothne's contributions were instrumental in establishing and nurturing Lutheran congregations in the Sheyenne Valley during that era.

The Norwegians were mostly Lutheran. They settled primarily in the Dakotas and Montana. They came here to own and till their own farm, using the US Homestead Act. They never wanted to be slave owners. They carved a life out of the raw prarie. The church is probably Missouri Synod. The stricter branch of Lutheranism. 13:10 I can answer that ! One of the ropes is for swinging the bell back and forth via a wheel, as you'd most commonly expect to hear, and that wheel doesn't look to be in good condition there. The other rope controls the large hammer you saw, this is for more solemn events such as funerals when slower tolling is expected. The bell is indeed written in Danish but is definitely made by the Meneely Foundry of West Troy NY - that's the font they used, moulding bands, bell profile (shape), headstock and frame. Perhaps the congregation were of Danish Lutheran descent? It sounds to be in the note G# and therefore would be around 1500lbs by modern standards. edit just saw that it shows you this.. someone else said it could be from Denmark so wanted to confirm

They most likely came by horse and buggy when it was first built, because automobiles were still being developed. Also, when this church was built the telephone had just recently been patented (1876), and it would be another 21 years before the radio would be patented (1897). In isolated communities people crave human interaction, especially with fellow Christians...I'm sure it was well worth the effort for them.

This church is still being used and is not abandoned like they make it out to be. The flies are a result of having an exterminator come twice a year for insects. Apologize for not having them cleaned up for these two trespassers. Very disappointed in their not at least getting permission from someone. There is a neighbor 1/2 mile away. It is not as isolated as they make it out to be. I am on a committee that oversees it and the cemetary since it was closed.

@trevorn93818 ай бұрын
It is not so much a lack of faith it is that nobody lives out there anymore. USDA policy since the 1970s when Nixon's ag secretary Earl Butz who told American farmers to "get big or get out" while simultaneously gutting FDR's New Deal Ag programs that were designed to keep farm families on the land has emptied out the Midwest. Most of the descendants of the farm families who built this country church in the 1870s probably no longer live in the area, they live in Minneapolis, Chicago or in cities and suburbs on the East Coast or West Coast. Farming didn't pay enough to earn a living anymore so the kids left home and found work elsewhere. The old folks died and their small family farms got bought/leased by a big time corporate farmer who is working thousands of acres. Pretty soon the congregation dwindled to a handful of people and there was not enough money in the plate on Sunday to pay a preacher. Someone is obviously paying the light bill and doing some maintenance and upkeep on the building. Probably an elderly person or a few people old who have fond memories of growing up in that church. Sadly, when they get too old to do the maintenance, or pass on it will probably fall into ruins.
@museluvr2 жыл бұрын
I wonder how many people living in the area drive by and think of God... or attended when younger? Where do they attend now. I also wonder if someone, probably older does not come and care for it until they pass on to God? Saddens my heart.
