The memorial to the people who died in action during WW I should be brought to the attention of the British Legion. There are funds available for the restoration and upkeep of War Memorials.

Not an “ancient” church at all; it’s a Victorian Church and as such probably well built and def restorable. The Yorkshire Diocese is entirely responsible for this church. If they can’t keep it in repair they should sell it to someone who would….

The "Friends of Friendless Churches" have taken ownership of a number of churches which are no longer consecrated. Whether they have taken ownership of this particular church though I cannot say.

The aesthetics of this building is simply stunning. many of the details hint at just how beautiful this church interior truly is. The windows alone, their shapes are very distinctive and set them apart, harkening to a time before the church was built. The rich colors of the stained glass! 🥰 I bet it would cost a fortune to restore it to its full glory😊🙏❤‍🩹.

I clicked on this because it said Yorkshire church. I was dismayed at the state of that beautiful place. Church of England has a responsibility to look after these places but it probably closed because of lack of parishioners i.e. income. In my last parish we restored and revitalised two derelict churches and now they're thriving. This one is so lovely I hope that the same happens there.

The money raked in by the church over the past 1000 yrs+ there shouldn’t be any derelict, abandoned churches anywhere! I take it there’s a churchyard. What about the families of the deceased? How are they supposed to visit their loved ones?

Church of England is not a rich church.. the upkeep of these buildings is high. A lot of churches closed down as the community stopped giving.. like church roof funds etc. where I was an organist the roof leaked we had buckets everywhere. And no funds to fix it . A large village our congregation averaged 10. Out of a two thousand villagers. We had 4 pubs always full but empty church. In these areas in the countryside less money coming in. Sad but most are sold and turned into houses or flats.

Churches go derelict because nobody or very few attend services. If the people abandon the church, then it's abandoned for a good reason. This church is about 200 years old. Huge decline in the CofE over last 100 years.

Sad to see, we have money to waste on projects like HS2, or cash for migrants but we come up short with buildings like this! This church could be repurposed for the community, or even as a home but I think the costs are now spiralling out of control. The real tragedy is the number of memorials inside that are no longer seen.

Looks like a church belonging to the Church of England. Church buildings are normally abandoned when there are no more people going to church to give money to pay for salaries and the upkeep of the church building. It is so sad.

Where I live we have a lot of African and Indian/Sri Lankan christians go to the local churches, and they are really helping to keep christianity going.

This will be a former Church of England building, no signs of key elements you find in a catholic church, ie confessional. Windows obviously date from around 1920 as they commemorate the fallen of the Great War

I hope you closed that door securely when you left to stop destruction by weather and vandals. Somebody obviously tried to keep the church safe by putting up fences but if you can get in through that open door anyone can and their intentions may not be as kind as yours.

A great explore especially being able to go below, I have a similar love for these old churches more so cemetery chappels but i mainly just document the outside as my climbing days are over. This is a large church with church rooms for various activities and obvious signs of lots of community events - possibly a youth club, fetes etc. It's been abandoned with a lot of useful stuff- saleable, if you're being cynical, like the pews. It is hard to believe it couldn't have been used as a community resource, or at worst sold for housing. How sad to think of the people who paid for memorials to be erected to loved ones, expecting them to be visible to the community for hundreds of years and so their names remembered. Such a waste.

The basement storeroom for chairs spoke of large church gatherings - even a numbered spinning wheel which could have been used for cake walks!

Someone has been using this church as late as the 20th century. There are signs that it has n't been abandoned that long. Red carpet, some modern office things, construction, fixtures, etc. It would be interesting to restore it for an event center for weddings, etc. If the cost were not prohibitive. There should be a way to get govt grants for preserving a historic structure.

A Victorian church which has modern steel security shutters and fencing on it, so not ancient or lost. There is one that looks much the same within walking distance of me where I live. I would think we have hundreds of abandoned churches around the UK. Church users are a minority these days. My late Uncle was a Priest and when he died his funeral was in the church where he served the Community for most of his adult life, was the last service in the church. It was closed down and now stands boarded up and empty.

Trying to remember the name as I used to be on the church choir when I was in primary school, the soutains (Black cassocks) that went underneath went home with choir boys to be washed at home generally.) That is a lovely old church. I'm surprised it's not offered up to developers to make it into a lovely home. I am spiritual, and would love to live there. Change the toilet into a shower room (with toilet etc)....At 06.16 - wow! That IS a surprise! Just don't get how they can just leave a church to fall to pieces like this, what a shame. Think the church itself is old, the walls of that thickness was built earlier, looks like 1500's even though they added a War memorial inside. The walls are old and the lattice work in ceiling reminds me of quite old churches. Modern ones had oak beams and different structures, but not an expert but that is the feel of it. Just a shame it is falling down though instead of the council selling it of and or use it for other activities. Could be a wicked boxing club or youth club. x

I am not of any religious persausion, but I do like to photograph old churches, primarily for the architecture. It is so sad to see these derelict constructions become even more delapidated. From the looks of it, this church would need serious renovation, running into the hundreds of thousands - moneys, no doubt, that the C of E or Roman Catholics would be unwilling to outlay. Either way, a comprehensive Surveyor's report would need submitting - tho' I doubt the local council would put their hands in their pockets for same....tragic.

A lot of old churches have been sympathetically restored into office blocks or workshops, smaller chapels sold off and converted into homes. It could be its location and lack of interest in purchasing that has created its current demise. It is well secured and has kept out casual vandals, but that door needs to be shut on your way out to deter others from making the same way in.

I closed the doors best I could on the way out and I’ve also informed the authorities that it needs sealing up so it doesn’t get destroyed by vandals.

the reason some of the keys you tried on the upright piano and the note that stuck is due to moisture in the piano causing the wood in the keys to expand and stick the other instrument would have been an old probably 1960s 70s or 80s electric organ probabl had built in speakers or went to a sound system now unfortunately not used

Seeing this lovely building in this state makes me want to grab my cleaning gear and get in there to clean up. Wouldn't it be a nice surprise for whoever owns it now, to get in there and find it all cleaned and polished. The cross on a pole is what one of the altar boys or servers would have carried to lead the priest or vicar into church on a Sunday morning for the start of the service. It is a processional symbol that would have walked ahead of the priest and the holy book. Would have accompanied the bread/wine and offerings from the back of the church to the front, and at the end of the service, would have walked ahead of the Priest/Vicar down the aisle and out of the main church into the vestry. It's possible, that the void under the church may have one time been used as a crypt, or designated as such, although if the area was not consecrated, they they would have not been able to have been put there, and also there are no memorials, so this could have had any internments removed.and relocated elsewhere. Thank you for filming this for all to see, and for respecting the items within. I'd far rather see someone like you go in and take nothing but film and pictures, than see someone who goes in with the sole objective of stealing.

Thank you for your input I really appreciate it 👍 I absolutely love documenting places like this even tho it is sad to see it decaying after 10 years of abandonment. I’ll always show respect wherever I visit I can’t stand people who don’t. They was some old steps outside leading underground but it was gated and locked so I couldn’t take a look but very interesting for sure.

This place could make a nice open plan living space . with plenty of land. fix the roof and most of it is sorted. i hope someone snatches this little hidden treasure gets swooped up

There are two organisations which may help: Friends of Friendless Churches, and National Churches Trust. Hope one, or both might help

churches belong to the people of the parish, if they waste this lovely building its their loss, shame on them
