Today we visit what remains of Eggborough Power Station. We heard this place was being demolished so this was our last chance to get inside and locate the control room, what we didn't realise was that demolition would be happening as we were there.

I worked there, I still live nearby, when the cooling towers came down we felt an earthquake that woke us up, we watched the Chimney being demolished and felt the shockwave hit our faces.

Norton gives us a brief insight into his serious side when he said 'I think the people that built this intended it to last forever'. My dad said almost the same thing when we went to see the demolition of Houghton main pit, where he'd worked for almost 30 years. I completely agree with his sentiment.

They could run for hundreds of years easily due to their design, the turbine shafts weighing over a hundred tons "floated" on oil making the white metal bearings contactless. These stations would have prevented the current energy crisis we are in had they not been demolished!

it was meant to be upgraded with the times that's why and there were planning to replace it with a 2,500 megawatt gas power plant till gas prises went tits up

@@djtekknotis Yes we'd heard about a proposed CCGT on the old grounds. There's also an historical link to the grounds, on old maps before the station was built there are references to Tranmere Hall and Sherwood Hall. Maureen, a retired RMN and head of a Robin Hood Historical Club told me they had witness accounts of Robin traveling up the Calder Valley and onto the Castleford area where the "trail" ended. It may have been Robin was heading to Eggorough PS site. There's a first hand account from a man who was a youngster in the 1940s, on the site was a Manor House, the owner was in his 70s, on the land was a spring that bubbled up through sand creating crystal clear pond where they would go swimming, he said he'd talked to the old man and that he had said Robin had lived there.

eggborough was one of the last coal fired powerstations built around the south yorkshire area demolishion took place at the same time as ferrybridge with only the control room & relay rooms still standing you guys are lucky to have got this far as last time i passed this place it was complete but security was so tight the perimiter cameras followed me all the way along the road that runs along the side of the cooling towers

Great video - a moment of history documented. I'm an ex-power station operator from the CEGB days, so all of those switches/dials are very familar. You are right, being hard-wired, operating switches gave you a "positive" feeling along with the associated ammeters giving a "positive" indication. It all seems complicated but a lot was repeditive - the advantage was that you could monitor everything at a glance instead of having to scroll through loads of screens.

All of the Key Lock Boxes you came across are for isolations to plant equipment - you'd sign contractors/maintenance onto permits and lock the keys to isolations in those boxes & then issue a key from the lock box itself to a contractor with the permit stopping anyone from opening said box whilst work was underway. The control room is very reminiscent of my time down the Vanguard class submarines - exact same kit I learned on, extremely outdated now, but probably was used until decommission of the plant. Not one single person would know everything about all sections, there would be people with certain roles assigned to their sections, SCPO, MCDO so on. Great work getting in there though lads, certainly had my nerves going when you decided to start playing with the switches & buttons haha!

Kinda bittersweet seeing the photos! Places that once had life just about to be destroyed. It's cheesy but I always think of the scenes in Titanic when they fade between the sunken ship footage and then footage of people in that space enjoying it in the past. This facility seemed to be in good condition.

I've done something similar to the circuit diagrams and switches on those control panels. Really complex stuff.... Back in my school days I remember we connected a light bulb to a battery. It also had a switch in the circuit, just to make it that much harder to pull off. We then had a draw a blueprint explaining how our circuits worked. Bet I could have worked in that control room.🤣

Years ago I went to Richborough power station in Kent which still has its cooling towers standing, and the main building was gutted out with rubble everywhere but the main structure was still standing. I am sure it is all gone now.

If you and a few colleagues were going to work on a dangerous component, you would turn it off with its key and lock it in one of those key boxes and each take a key. That way the component couldn’t be energised until all the keys are back.

The owners are planning to build a new 2,500 megawatt combined cycle gas turbine power station on the site. Physically much smaller but 20% more electrical output and will be the most efficient in the UK.

The uniform were, I believe National Power, when the government sold off sections of the generation industry... There was and still a 10 year apprenticeship for most involved in the running and maintenance of these plants , specific parts were serviced by many teams of workers was usually the way things were done...nice one guys...

One thing that DID concern me was that you appeared to be wandering around a building that was literally in the process of being demolished.
