Did you know that there is an abandoned Russian settlement in the Arctic called Barentsburg? Wait until you see this story, it will blow your mind!!
I had to take a 2-hour boat ride from Longyearbyen (the biggest town in Svalbard) which is under Norwegian control, over to Barentsburg (the second-biggest town in Svalbard) which is under Russian control.
The two towns could not be any more different.
After visiting 169 countries and more than 500 cities, I find Barentsburg to be the absolute most bizarre town in the world.
It was purchased by the Soviet Union about 90 years ago from the Dutch because of the on-site coal mine... While there are about 400 Russian & Ukrainian miners still working here today, it's a failing business, and it's obvious that Russia keeps this place alive because they want a presence in the Arctic (think natural resources, trade routes, etc).
Walking around Barentsburg gave me flash backs to North Korea. Abandoned buildings. Seemingly staged people and culture. I still can't quite wrap my head around this!
If you enjoyed this video, please share it! It's one of my top 10 favorites of all time.

He is from the United States, so he cant avoid it. All that russophobia there always gets in the mind of the people who watch the mass media. But he was honest about the intentions of Russia having that town. The job of that people is to be there, the government pay them for that. Its a job after all, I don't mean it is a easy job. The weather there is harsh. The Norwegian part is way more visited because I don't see the media attacking Norway in any way. But at least he shown the place, so people with economical resources can go there just to check how weird really is.

@@OrochiCr that is false, yes he's from the United States, as am I. He's using the word weird as in a synonym of different. Saying something is weird isn't an insult it's just saying it's different. Its more like, to keep territorial claims politicly relevant, and maybe a bit national-prestige mixed with geopoliticl mindeset and so on..

And also during winter time in Svalbard, there is no sunlight, which wouldn't make for a great video. Along with snow, wind and extremely low temperatures, blissards etc. Whilst in the summertime you have to black out your windows to get some sleep at night due to the midnight sun. So it's a much better time to visit.

Barentsburg is a part of Norway . If you are in Barentsburg, than you are in Norway, you are not in Russia. The company that owns the town is russian, they owns the buildings , and the population of this town works for this russian company . But the landscape is a part of Norway . And norwegian laws apply, and the police are also norwegian . So this is defenetly a Russian town , but it is located IN Norway !

@olanordmann1252
@olanordmann1252 4 жыл бұрын
@Mor Dor you dont get it. Norwegians are only paid by the government if they work in actual governmental positions. However, russia pays all people to live in barentsburg, because the actual coal mining is not sustainable, so russian state pays them for them to continue living there, while actually loosing money on the coal mining. Because if russia don't pay them enough, they will leave Svalbard, and russia does not want that.
@olanordmann1252
@olanordmann1252 4 жыл бұрын
@Mor Dor coal mine is owned by the russian state. It really doesn't matter, but the point was to say that russia is paying workers to live in Svalbard, they don't make any money from the coal, they only want them there so that russia has a presence in Svalbard, which is kind of peculiar.

@spacefertilizer

Roof2 everyone knows Svalbard is Norwegian. It’s as far as I know only the small mining colony Brantesburg that is Russian. Why would Russia have a consulate in Svalbard if they owned it? Because of a treaty from 1920 Russia has rights to exploit natural resources, but Svalbard is still under Norwegian sovereignty. The Russians there even have Norwegian email-addresses and phone numbers.
@spacefertilizer

Roof2 it’s a lie that Russia has a consulate there? That their telephone numbers and email-addresses are Norwegian? Why aren’t Russia just claiming the land as they would do if they felt entitled to it?
