Thanks for watching! This video was less of an adventure but more of a really interesting corner of the world that I wanted to share with you. I’m just curious - do you prefer seeing more adventures/challenges or more educational pieces like this? Or maybe a hybrid of both? Have a great weekend!

I'm Dutch and actually visited Baarle this summer for the first time in my 50 year life-span. Really unique. It breathes history. Because what you did not touch up on was the unique role it played during both WW's. It was a relay hub for mail, a place of contact and smugglers abused it's unique properties. You love borders, but IMO it shows the rediculousness of borders. BTW: You reaching out to the eldery lady really moved me!

I remember planning a trip from work here in the UK to our office in the Netherlands and seeing all these crazy section of borders just on the Dutch side of the Netherlands/Belgium border. Zooming in I saw enclave within enclave. Being from an island, where you don't really see much difference without crossing a body of water, this really blew my mind. Knowing how lovely the Dutch and Belgian people are, this is definitely worth a detour to check out. Thanks for the insight

The biggest benefit my Belgian father had, 35 years ago, was that diabetic products like jam were free and cheap available in the Netherlands but expensive and only available in the pharmacy in Belgium. We lived near Baarle and grocery shopping was cheaper in the Dutch stores because of the lower taxes, clothing sales were also cheaper because in the Netherlands shops are allowed to sell at the wholesale price, in Belgium you always need to sell with a profit.

There are lots of them in Europe, like Büsingen (Germany inside Switzerland), Campione d'Italia (Italy inside Switzerland), Llivia (Spain inside France), five German enclaves caused by the Belgian Vennbahn and a piece of Bosnia inside Serbia. There is even one here in Slovenia, a small piece of Croatia inside a Slovene village.

One important factor is that like in Scandinavia, in NL and Flanders TV programmes for all ages are shown in the original language so they watch a lot of US and British content in the original language, with subtitles in Dutch. Whereas in countries where the language is French, German, Spanish or Italian they don't as programmes and films are dubbed in the language of that country, so speakers of those languages tend not to have that advantage and their English is as a rule not as good as in Flanders, NL and Scandinavia. I'm pretty sure that in the French speaking part of Belgium they watch English language programmes on TV dubbed in French, hence you will meet francophone Belgians who don't speak English whereas pretty much all Flemish Belgians do speak English.

I'm in Baarle-Nassau a few times each month for work. Sometimes I'm driving in both countries at the same time because the border splits the road in half. :) And as you have seen yourself, no issues with border crossings. Which would basically be impossible to guard anyway because there's so much border there. :P

If you have the right surrounding conditions borders really don’t matter. You can live or work in any of the countries, pay with the same money regardless of your nationality, like the bar owner said, she doesn’t even know who is Belgian or Dutch. Since they speak the same language, the country you live is even more irrelevant, it only defines where you have to pay your taxes

For anyone wondering why the majority of the Dutch and Belgian ppl speak very good English, it's because they get their first English lessons in kindergarten. The Netherlands is number 1 on speaking English for a country that don't have English as a native language. I believe Belgium is 3rd of 4rd on the list worldwide.

Belgium as a whole is not so high up, but flanders is pretty much on par with the netherlands It's just that all the french-speakers drag the average level down a lot, french-speaking people are notoriously bad at english
@BH4x0r
@BH4x0r 2 жыл бұрын
@@ihakker1416 that's because Dutch and English are both Germanic languages, it's hard to learn when your main language is French as thats a Roman language (i think that's pretty obvious tho) another thing is, that Flemish people get pretty much forced to learn French in school, while the people in Wallonia get to choose wether they want to learn Dutch or not, if they also learned Dutch in kindergarten or elementary school they'd probably be much better at English aswell

Was there recently for the fireworks. When Autumn comes arround its nothing but queue's of people trynna buy fireworks. Fireworks arn't illegal in the Netherlands contrary to what your buddy said but Belgium's rules are way less strict so that is why that town is essentially known for its fireworks and nothing else to the people here. Thing is for us being in the EU we rarely cross real borders anyway so its kinda whatever since a border doesn't mean a lot to us anymore

I was there back in 2010, and sure, it's a fascinating place for us geonerds! On the other hand, it's really just another small, sleepy town in the border region, without much to do... I think there would have been a realignment of the border a long time ago, were it not for the tourism revenue created by this weird situation - as the elderly gentleman in the street cafe correctly pointed out.
