I was in the market for a new saddle pad after my old one wore out.

Omg! You’re a geezer after my own heart! Big Bend SW TX, Davis Mts. That has to be the area you were in. I’ve been there twice. Stayed at Fort Davis and the Chisos Basin. Saw my first javelina in that basin. Lived in Dallas now AZ. I love Big Bend. The way the Rio Grand winds its way through those red canyon walls in the barren landscape. Stunning! One of my favorite national parks. First time I was there was in early 80’s then later in the 80’s again before moving to AZ. There is something about the desolation and isolation and pure primitiveness of it that grabs you. I wanted it to swallow me up in its wild singularity. I want to go back. On horseback would be ideal. You would feel the immersion into a time without cars and engines knowing the only way to travel. I’m jealous! Take me with you!

You are like the man i spent most of my life with. We would hike for days on end. He always chose the nights camp and never lit a fire where no fire had been. He showed cache left by Jesuit, spanish, and indian. But never took a single thing. He died at the age of 84. Blind, deaf, and broke. The richest man I've ever known.

I wonder if the crosses are note of the Spanish conquistadores in the area, as they do resemble them. I was told that the holes were to hold water when it rained as it was in such short supply. Some of them placed in hunting grounds to lure animals in to drink the water. Awesome coverage.

What a great spot! Some of those petroglyphs were Spanish, not just Indian. Talking about rattlesnakes, there's an area South of that location where, story goes, a guy was clearing some mesquite on the ranch land and the rattlesnakes were so thick, he had to close himself up in the cab because he was flinging snakes up all over the dozer. In the evenings, the boss had to pull up to the dozer and the operator would have to jump out of the cab into the back of the truck.
