⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Exploring Boston's Green Line

The Green Line is a light rail system run by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the Boston, Massachusetts, metropolitan area. It is the oldest Boston rapid transit line, and with tunnel sections dating from 1897, the oldest subway in North America. It runs underground through downtown Boston, and on the surface into inner suburbs via four branches on several radial boulevards. With an average daily weekday ridership of 137,700 in 2019, it is the third most heavily used light rail system in the country. Enjoy this look at a very interesting operation!

Whenever we visited my cousins from Newton MA we would take the green line D branch from Newton Centre into the city. They moved to Florida during the summer of 2016. Boston is a great city full of great American history.

I've been in Boston many times to visit relatives My transit rides were only on subways and trackless trolleys. And the green line used PCCs back then. Thanks Tim for this video of an interesting operation😀💚

Btw the newer Type 8 car uses the same traction as the R142a R188 and R143 in the NYC subway.

Cool to see the old and new rolling stock running together, I’m guessing that it has to do with the older cars not having some sort of PTC so they must have a newer car attached? Great video as always, keep it up!

Type 7 need to be attached to Type 8 to meet the accessibility standard more conveniently, since Type 7 are high-floor and Type 8 are partial low-floor. Although some stations have lifts for wheelchairs to board Type 7, they are rarely used.

On game days, how come they don’t open the crowd gates when exiting Fenway station? As i recall, that used to be standard practice, to prevent crowding and possible accidents because passengers cannot safely clear the platform. The T has problems, but sometimes they are from the neck up and cannot be blamed on budget.
