When I initially build, I over build my power capacity for later expansions, especially when you start building the small and large asteroid miners, that wirelessly receive power from your base. My favorite base building area is in the asteroid cloud above the abandoned base you find the laser rifle.

Spicy on the tool modification station there are 2 spots to interact with.. plus if you make oxygen canisters you can make it to the old hub. it was by the place you went with the bubble.
