That king of the underworld was Arawn, and after he and Pwyll swaped places, they became good friends when Arawn discovered that even though Pwyll had evey oppurtunity to sleep with his wife, he didn't, because Pwyll is a true bro. That is why he named Pwyll "the head of Annwn", which was an honorary title that basically meant he was a good friend and champion of the king of Annwn.

For anyone who wants to read a great retelling of all four branches of the Mabinogion involving Rhiannon, her son, Manawydden and others they should read Evangeline Walton's great tetralogy consisting of The Prince of Annwn, The Children of Llyr, The Song of Rhiannon and The Island of the Mighty. She stays true to the original stories but fills in a lot of blank space with motivation and observation while keeping continuing themes running through them. Originally published complete almost fifty years ago it may be hard to find. My copy is from a reprint from 2004 but I vividly remember reading them when Ballantine published them back in the early 70's. Take it from someone who has been reading sci-fi and fantasly for almost sixty years, you won't regret searching them out. Gorgeous writing.

Stevie was inspired by the name itself after reading a book titled, "Triad: A Novel of the Supernatural" written by Mary Bartlett Leader in 1972/73. A story about two young cousins, one nice, Bronwen & one nasty, Rhiannon who treated her cousin badly. Bronwen accidentally kills Rhiannon and years latter her guilt manifests as Rhiannon haunting her but in reality it's mental issues related to becoming a split personality. The song, except for the name, has nothing to do with the story in the book.
