Chicago resident here...I love my dive bars. I just turned 40 and been going to them since I was 18. I also lived in Iowa when I was younger and we were allowed in the bars still at 18 and would have my sisters boyfriend now husband buy us drinks lol. My favorite thing was bellying up to the bar next to the old timers and listening to their stories. Also props to you Joel for letting me come live with you and my sister after you first got married and were in law school when I was 18 and building me a bedroom in your house(literally he built me a room in their basement) and only charging me $100 a month for rent. Very relatable...all my friends are like real grown ups(...my two high school buddies are doctors now but they know who to call if they're in a jam and needs someone to have their back. I'll never forget when I was living with them I came home drunk in the middle of the night and we had a shared bathroom that you could enter from the hallway but they could also enter it from their bedroom. So I had spilled grape gatorade all over my self after coming home from the bars and was in the bathroom buck naked and my brother in law walks in flips the light on(yes I didn't turn the lights on for some reason) and sees me standing there naked and covered in blue looking gatorade and i just turn look at him and say "Joel I'm all blue" which he than walks back into his bedroom and I hear him say to my sister, "your brother is drunk, naked and covered in gatorade in the bathroom. Don't go in there" I remember being out on my brother in law's dad's farm in Iowa and him teaching me how to drive a stick shift...I look down on the seat(bench seat...it was an old Ford pick up) and he had cut a whole out on the seat and I asked "what's that for" and he said "to keep my beer in place while I'm driving around in the fields"...apparently they didn't have cup holders lol.

bellying up next to some regulars is the best! I just did that on a trip to St. Louis and its just always such a great time to hear some fun stories from some old-timers! and man hahah what a story with the gatorade hahah your brother in law and sister sound awesome!
