Having grown up in Tapo Canyon back in the early 60s. I used to hike all over that area. That particular spot was where they hauled old equipment and just left them there. So it's kind of a junk yard of sorts. Some of it oil related some it farm related. The ranchers ran cattle all over in there and Getty Oil Company also had oil wells all over up there. There was a motor house down just West off Tapo Cyn road that powered many of the wells by cable. The cables crossed over Tapo Cyn Rd. There were many concrete foundations that anchored pipe towers that these cables attached to. The towers would sway back and forth pulling and relaxing the cables. This motion operated the wells. It was quite a system. That one piece of equipment appears to be whats left of a Threshing/bailing machine. Probably used down on the open field areas off of Tapo Cyn Rd. and most likely in the flat lands of Simi Valley. I don't remember seeing any evedence of farming going on up in those hills. Nice video of the area. Kinda cool to see it again. It's been over 50 years for me.

The piece of farm equipment with the wooden floor gone, but the chain remaining in place was a manure spreader, the other piece is the header, and a pull type combine.

I think one of those rusty pieces was a hay bailer. I could be wrong but it reminds me of one in the area I grew up.

the bubbling is a spring... that supplied the water to the Marr Ranch houses

I had heard from a hiker that the water is sulfur water, do you know anything about that?
@grannyLynnsCreations8 жыл бұрын
yes it is actually... My family lived on Marr Ranch in 1969/1970 time frame.. my dad helped out working on the Oil Wells..and the water was stinky... we had bottled water delivered for drinking.. --- However, if you filled up your jugs with the spring water and let it sit out covered with cheese cloth for a day or so, the smell went away and it tasted very good. The sulfur is a byproduct of the oil deposits in the area.

@@grannyLynnsCreations That is absolutely correct. All of the ground water in those areas was contaminated with crude oil. I can distinctly remember while hiking how bad it smelled of sulfur and it tasted horrible. I always hiked with a canteen after tasting it.

how do you get to the car from the big piece of equipment
@ExploringVenturaCounty7 жыл бұрын
The large piece of equipment is located just off the main trail, if you continue off the trail past it, the car is about 100 yards past, follow the foot trail to it. Thanks for watching!
