Actually unstimulated animal killings and animal cruelty was quite common in films well into the 1980s. Many films showed depicted horses with riders being shot. This didn't actually shoot the horse for real, but it was nearly as bad. Instead they would string a thin cable in the horse's path to cause it to trip. Broken legs were quite common and considered an acceptable risk, even though a broken leg is a fatal injury for a horse. The film Walkabout (which is quite good) depicts several unstimulated animal deaths where they show the Aborigine boy (none of the characters in the film were named) is hunting. Animal cruelty laws in film making weren't really a thing in the late 70's. Even Disney deliberately pushed a large number of lemmings over a cliff when they would not perform this "natural" behavior on there own while making a documentary on these animals. In fact, lemmings never do this naturally. It's a myth.

@jynexe30565 жыл бұрын
@Miguel Flagstaff I'm not quite sure how you can say that. Objectivity regarding morality is difficult. The only way to assume it is to assume that there is a God, and to assume that God can determine what is objectively morally good and communicate it to you. To some, objective moral good is killing certain types of people to cleanse the world of their horror. To a lot of people, that means killing certain types of dangerous criminals. Whats a dangerous criminal? It could be someone who murders or someone who spreads what some determine to be dangerous thought, be it then wrong religion (as it would sully God's name), it could be spreading ideas that you find to be evil (such as nazism to an ultra liberal pink haired girl or homosexuality to an ultra conservative muslim) This isn't to say having a moral compass is bad, or even that I disagree with your perspective on moral good and bad, but it is to say that your idea of morality would shift if you were raised in a different way. It is to say that there is no objective moral good and moral evil. If you can think of a concept that all humans from the beginning of humanity till today can agree or disagree with, you've found objective morality. The field of philosophy will be extremely envious of you, for there is not an insignificant number of people who spent their entire lives trying to determine what objective morality is.

Seriously, I love the ironic audacity of this film: To try making a point about how the media exploits violence for profit, in a film that was specifically made to profit from the exploitation of violent imagery. When I first saw this, I thought that was just absurd. But now thinking about what they asked Ruggero to do, and how he responded by giving them exactly what they wanted, to such an extreme degree that it was banned in 40 countries, and murder charges filed, but presented this ultra-violent imagery within a plot of judgement against the very sort of exploitation he was being paid to create; I think of it now as highly subversive, possibly brilliant.

Nick Waddle That’s not what it’s about. I know one of the major characteristics of art is that it is open for interpretation, but this had a pretty clear message. It definitely wasn’t about how “all humans are inherently evil” mainly because that’s just not true. Objective evil doesn’t exist. Different people see different things as evil. The message was definitely closer to what the guy you replied to said. If anything it’s a huge lesson for western culture on cultural relativism. Also, labeling someone who doesn’t like the movie as a left wing pussy isn’t very academic. Especially when that claim has little to no evidence. I myself am left wing, but I love this movie and am definitely not a pussy. The guy commentating was just giving his opinion and he said he doesn’t like it for “personal reasons”. That could mean a number of things.

Despite the unethical approach used to create this movie, I would say that it’s message is relevant even today. Idk what your political view is, but the way msm goes about talking about shootings, and acts of violence is very similar to back then. It’s bias and aims to scare people and either intentionally or unintentionally romanticizes the criminals commuting the acts of violence.

I think that's the basic issue. Virtually anyone would agree with the message, but the act of agreeing with the message means you must condemn the film because it is *exactly* the kind of thing that it purports to be against. Sensationalist, and exploitative.
@ThePhantomSafetyPin4 жыл бұрын
I think that's part of the genius of the film. You have to condemn what happened in the film if you like the film. It's a form of doublethink that makes us address how we look at real atrocities in the world - you can acknowledge, or you can ignore and let them happen, and if you acknowledge them you must condemn them or you are no better than the people who ignore it. It was meant also to make people think about who the real "savages" are - the people who live a lifestyle we consider "primitive", or the people who go and disturb someone else's culture for the sake of entertainment. Is it more vile that the tribe kills animals brutally and then cannibalizes the film crew? Or more vile that the film crew goes into the tribe, antagonizes them, hurts their members, sets stuff on fire, torments them, and otherwise fucks up their entire way of living for the sake of being douchebags and filming this supposed documentary? Which one you choose says a lot about that person, I think.

Less than five minutes in and, having seen this movie, I can tell what your issues are with the movie (very much understandably). I watched the movie because it was around 2010 or so, and I had watched "Paranormal Activity", which had me thinking about "The Blair Witch Project" and "The Last Broadcast". I remembered reading about another horror mockumentary that inspired movies like that and I went on to read about it, found and watched "Cannibal Holocaust". I think the movie's plot is an interesting one, if excessive. However, like almost everyone else, I think the on-screen animal killings were just too much (especially considering that some of the animals they killed were, I think, protected species). It was frustrating to me for the particular reason that the movie was "about" sensationalism in the media, namely documentaries...aaaand yeah, quite a lot of stupid irony there. The rest of the controversial material, I thought was actually kind of neat to a degree. Namely how Deodato had to produce the cast, including the extras, allegedly killed during filming and he showed how he did the scenes in court, in fact I think that would have made a fascinating real life documentary. Is the content of the movie excessive? In my opinion, yes, even discounting the animal deaths. I don't really care to watch it again and I don't blame anyone who can't stomach it. That said, I think that, otherwise, it's some creative film making. It makes me sad that it's marred by such a poor decision by the director.
@hermionestranger49644 жыл бұрын
Agreed -- the idea, message and even the horror aspects were fine, but the director didn't draw some lines in the sand that needed to be drawn. That said, I feel that a lot of the indignation that mainstream media and film news felt over this film was more due to its criticism of "first world" countries committing atrocities but accusing indigenous peoples of being "primitive" (though his own depiction of the indigenous people isn't 100% correct either, with regards to their traditions, food or clothes). There was strong indignation at Vauqier's Afrique 50 as well, which wasn't even a horror film of any kind, just a documentary about the lives of natives in a French colony -- the Eurocentric media couldn't forgive such an anti-imperialist take, and the film was banned (I believe scraps of it remain and can be seen on KZbin; I've seen a few scenes from some film class DVD of politically censored media). Yes, the animal scenes were unnecessary, and it begs the question if the director isn't a hypocrite for using exploitation factors in a film that he claims is anti-exploitation. However, I'm shocked that this film almost threw the film crew into jail for alleged murder and obscenity, and the movie was suppressed across the world, when in the Twilight Zone movie, due to the director's severe negligence and the terrible, illegal working conditions he put the cast through (including very young child actors), three performers died, two of which were children (decapitated and crushed by a helicopter in front of their guardians). The film was released with barely a murmur by the film critics; Landis left the scandal unscathed (though the movies he'd go on to direct, like Beverly Hills Cop 3 and Blues Brothers 2000 were critical and financial flops); and to this day while most critics agree that it's a bad and boring film, few seem to care overly much about the lives sacrificed so brutally for it. There's actually a large number of films and TV shows where cast or crew died during filming (Catch-22, Con-Air, The Walking Dead), and it's terrible that the directors who put the people under them into such precarious situations go away scot-free (while the director of Cannibal Holocaust, who hadn't orchestrated the death of any performer or crew-member, was thoroughly horse-whipped). Some directors are even praised as geniuses -- if it hadn't been for Clint Eastwood's common sense during the making of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, he and co-star Eli Wallach would have been killed in the bridge explosion scene, because Sergio Leone didn't ensure any kind of on-set security even where pyrotechnics were concerned. He was insanely bad to his casts. Wallach was seriously injured numerous times during the course of shooting.

I don't think anyone could deny that the message he tried to carry was hypocritical with him doing most of them within his own piece, but still the message rings true in most cases, and overall it doesn't make it any less valid. When I first watched Cannibal Holocaust years ago, my parents wanted to watch it with me, regardless of my warnings to them about its infamy. Needless to say, it made what is already an uncomfortable experience so much more so. My mother, who can't even watch the Saw films mind you, made it about halfway through before walking out on it. However, while I can't say that I enjoy this film, I do recommend it to any horror fan that wants to see the limits that the horror genre can go to.

Still, these are animals were getting killed over there on a dailey base and just in the same manner. The only difference was that there was a camera present this time. xfinafire Barron A Cannibal Holocaust was just one in a long-line of "mondo" films that we're popular at the time. Mondo were the specific genre of exploitation films that Holocaust was responding to; pseudo-documentaries that often staged or manipulated events for dramatic effect. These films are considered the progenitor of the snuff film myth, since real on-screen death was often a major part of their advertising. Rarely were people actually killed, and as far as we're aware no one's death was specifically engineered for the film, but there were plenty of real corpses, and plenty of very real animal cruelty. Goodbye Uncle Tom was one such film, it was a mondo focusing on the 19th century Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, with a framed around a group of time travelers in the Antebellum South making a documentary. The film was shot in Haiti with the full co-operation and participation of the government, at the time led by the dictator Francois "Papa Doc" Duavlier. Most of the extras were political dissidents and prisoners, and were held in the very real slave quarters and were effectively treated the same as, if not worse than, their real-world counterparts. It's undoubtedly one of the most appalling and distasteful things you'll ever see in your life, and knowing the full story behind its production only makes it infinitly worse.

@@antic2347 the core points of all three though are the same, that when people from the US & Europe go into developing countries & places they perceive as lawless, and have the opportunity to exploit people they see as weaker or more vulnerable than themselves, they are likely to stray so far from "civilised" behaviour as to become monsters. I'm not sure I agree with that point 100% but it's certainly borne out by the history of (e.g.) the Spanish Conquistadors, the Belgian Congo, the British in India, Kenya, Malaysia, the white colonists in Australia and so on. @leopardprints Жыл бұрын
Agreed! They could easily have faked the deaths. There is no justification at all for the killing of the animals. In an interview with one of the actors he said that they did have an effects for the monkey deaths, but the director wanted the real thing. Plus it started the trend of animal cruelty in other cannibal movies. I saw one still of a monkey being tied up and eaten by a snake that will haunt me for life (I can't remember which movie I think it was Cannibal Ferox). Plus he treated the extras badly, like with the hut burning scenes the extras were really put in danger.

Serious question, speaking as an animal lover, but why is the footage of animals being killed controversial in Cannibal Holocaust, whereas footage of horses falling over in literally any film made prior to (roughly) 1950 completely ignored? They used to deliberately trip horses when filming battle scenes, for example, which usually resulted in them breaking limbs and death. I enjoy classic cinema, despite a substantial chunk of it being overtly racist (especially anything directed by DW Griffiths), but I can view most of these films within their historic context. However, I find films like 1925's Ben-Hur difficult to watch because I know the cruelty you see on screen is very real. There are plenty of examples of films post-1950 as well where animal cruelty/neglect is either present on screen or (more commonly) happening off-screen, including recent blockbusters like The Hobbit. My point is here is people are fixated on the animal cruelty aspect of Cannibal Holocaust, which I'm in no way defending, but are more than happy to watch films both modern and historic without complaint. It's only because it's more obvious in Cannibal Holocaust (or perhaps because it's a low-budget B-horror movie) that people get up in arms.
@DeadKraken6 жыл бұрын
I think it's also because not many people know the behind the scenes of most movies, and don't know that the violence was real. CH is well know for the real animal torturing and killing, so people are more likely to complaint about it that say, complain about The Hobbit animal cruelty(even I didn't know about that until now for example). Or they're just hypocrites, there is also this option xD
@woogusaurus14456 жыл бұрын
yea it's mostly cognitive dissonance, in shows like game of thrones 30,000 + square feet of leather and fur was used, but people don't even care about that. no one seems to have consistent feelings about animal cruelty these days.
@DeadKraken6 жыл бұрын
woogusaurus Wait a sec on that, because leather and fur is usually obtained from the meat industry(usually it's from cows for the leather and rabbits for the fur), so technically it's not animal abuse\cruelty unless it comes from a fur farm(from animals like foxes, weasels etc..) and it's not easy to determine which one is which, since also fake fur looks very similar to the real one. Take also into account that complaining about real furs is not trendy anymore, now the hypocritical PETA assholes prefer to whine about killing rats in videogames.
@woogusaurus14456 жыл бұрын
LadyKraken I'm just saying that people aren't consistent with their status on animal cruelty. People will complain when a few animals are killed on screen, but they are perfectly fine with using thousands of dead animals for clothing and decoration in a big franchise like game of thrones. There is no connection made between the two 'films', and that is the issue. It's either all ok, or none of it is ok. There is no inbetween fallacy
@DeadKraken6 жыл бұрын
And I'm agreeing on that, but I also think that most people percieve those things differently because the animals are killed or being abused for different reason. If an animal is killed primarly for its meat, then most people don't care about if its skin is then used for a jacket, but if the animal is killed for motivations considered "futile"(like for fur, sport, medicine, entertainment and what not)then its death doesn't serve any justifiable purpose and people are gonna complain about it. It's like with korean dogs, people kill pigs, chickens and cows in the million everyday to eat, but if korean people eat dogs then people are gonna whine about it like no tomorrow, because they percieve it as an useless death.

The Green Inferno is another take on how news in social media can be manipulated like in the original that used the the legacy media. Green Inferno was a satire on social justice warriors. If you understand Eli Roth's sense of humor the movie is a dark comedy on social justice warriors and that they are usually according to him wealthy adults who behave like reckless children and how their own arrogant actions cause their deaths in the movie. How Americans think tjat just because they are Americans they can dictate to the world how the world should be ran. SJWs are radical idiots that think they are making a change but in the real world it serves no real purpose then to make self-indulgent American feel more evolved than other nations who they see as inferior. The thought police. Eli Roth makes this quite clear and makes fum of this type of mentality.
