Thank you very much for taking the time to watch my video.
Something a little different from the regular Wild Camping and Bushcraft videos.
I've always been fascinated by World War 2 history, and also movies made based on that time period, so a long time ago now, me and some friends decided we would love to go over to France to visit some of the D-Day landing areas, and see the museums and cemetarys dedicated to all the brave men that fought in those battles, and pay our respects.
So after a bit of planning, 7 of us decided to have a long weekend of adventure in France.
I ended up taking tons of footage so i've broken the video down into different parts.
I hope you enjoy watching

Wow, the amount of people that have left that port for battle or for adventure. There's a fair bit of history there Jay. Far out Pegasus Bridge - learned all about during my para training. They fought a good fight. Great to see the gliders to. Well, you didn't miss out the beach. I've always wanted to go myself. One day. Thanks for sharing Jay - an awesome trip. Mark

Hi Jay, like you I am a military history fan too. If I’m honest, history in general. My 1st battlefield tour was to Arnhem with some old rugby mates. We hired a battlefield Guide which was really worth the money as he took us through the battle from landing zone to extraction point (for the lucky ones). We next did Normandy and through a contact of mine who was not only a BF Guide but was treasurer of the BF Association of Guides UK. He was at his house in Bayeux and was booked the weekend we were there by rich yanks to take them round Omaha and Utah. However, he met us for a drink and gave us a written itinerary For our weekend stay, (top man). We saw the main gun batteries and the one that was missed in the 1st few days which was only discovered relatively recently by an English guy. We also went to Pointe du Hoc where the US Rangers stormed the cliff which in terms of fatalities was very costly to that unit. My interest in WW2 stemmed from my father who served with distinction in WW2 with both 2nd and 3rd Battalions Coldstream Guards. He saw action in France, Italy (Monte Casino) and North Africa where he won the MM which would now be the Military Cross. He stormed a German machine post By himself which was situated on Long Stop Hill. He ran zig zagging to the German position who were equipped with an MG34. He had a Thompson machine gun. He not only took the position but made the Germans turn the gun on their own troops as he was threatening to kill them. He made the front pages of all the daily nationals for his heroics (good for national morale at the time). You can see the photo they took at the time with him holding the MG34 by googling in Lance Sergeant Richard Sumner. Try using this link - en-gb.facebook.com/2Coldstream/posts/1401732983227320. I’ve prattled on too much but thought you might find it interesting.

What an amazing comment buddy! Enjoyed reading that! What a brave fellow your father was! Amazing to hear what he did! They where certainly made of tough stuff back then!! Part 2 of my Normandy trip will be coming very soon, I’ve almost finished editing it. We visited Utah, Pointe Du Hoc, Omaha, the American Cemetary, and lots of other amazing places, All the best mate, Jay

Docked at Ouistraham/Sword Beach, there are a few excellent museums there, one of them in a German observation tower just down the road and overlooking the beach, the Commando museum is also worth a visit. Done several week long trips to Normandy to pay my respects visiting many museums and battlefields. Pegasus Bridge museum has had a big makeover, met and chatted to a Veteran of the attack, my first visit there the old original bridge was still in place across the canal, I have a photo of it in the raised position with a barge going under it. Merville Battery is brilliant, met and chatted to a Veteran there too, a radio operator, Point Du Hoc/Hoe is good. There are many places well worth visiting, hence several trips over a few years, and still only seen a small part.

Excellent! Thank you for the info buddy. Normandy is an amazing place. Would have loved to see the original Pegasus bridge in position before the new one was put in. We managed to visit a lot of other places as well, all 5 of the landing beaches, and museums, some incredible bunkers, Pointe Du Hoc, and the British and American cemeteries. That’s all coming very soon in Parts 2 and 3 of the videos. But like you say, there is just so much to explore! We squeezed a ton into the 3 days we where there though, I’d certainly like to visit again. All the best, Jay

Hey Jay, I absolutely loved the videos you did on Normandy. They do hold some memories in my family. My brother in law by adoption was in that first wave and he was on Omaha Beach and the unit he was with was the first to March into bukenvaukt Germany where that nazi death camp was. He never spoke much about it other than you could smell the dead bodies a mile away. I have two really old triangle glass containers, held together with lead. That will tell ya they are really old and in one is sand from Omaha Beach and the other is from Utah Beach. I don't like to touch them cause every time I have I get this strange feeling in my gut, it's hard to explain. Thanks for listening my friend. Dwayne

Hey Dwayne! Wow buddy, that is some awesome history mate. Thank you very much for sharing those stories with us! I’ve still got part 2 and 3 of the Normandy videos to upload. We visited Omaha and Utah beach! Such amazing places with so much feeling and history, I felt very privaliged to be there. We visited the United States cemetery too. Just incredible! So overwhelming to see all the thousands of US soldiers buried there that gave everything. I do have a few regular camping vids to upload soon too, so apologies for the lack of content on the channel, I need to get my ass in gear with the editing and get these vids uploaded. Also planning on another Military surplus camp soon, got some sweet new/old gear to use 😎 Thanks for sticking around Dwayne! All the best and take care buddy 😎👊🏻 Jay
