I haven’t been to Cleveland in almost 25 years. Lots of cool history in this video. Never understood why people in the north east would malign Cleveland as the mistake by the lake. People I met while I was there were always kind to me.

Adam, the funny thing is, Cleveland would actually be a great location to have a second home for you during the summer months and early fall. We are in the heart of baseball country and there are many MLB ballparks within a reasonable days drive from here. Pittsburgh: 2 hours Cincinnati: 3.5 hours Chicago: 6 hours Philadelphia: 7 hours Milwaukee: 8 hours New York city: 8.5 hours Boston: 10 hours Detroit: 3 hours Plus, Cleveland would love to have the Woo ! 😎

Thank you for showing some of the great parts of the city I was born and raised in and still live. I worked in downtown Cleveland for 28 years, in the Justice Center. I watched lots of movies being filmed during my lunch hour, ate at Tower City, the Galleria and the Old Arcade. hope you enjoyed your time here. Had I known I definitely would have tried to come meet you and thank you for your great content, always, in person!

Hi Adam, welcome to CLE! Some info on the Galleria. I had one of the last retail stores in there. The mall was built by Dick Jacobs, previous owner of the Indians and why the ballpark is still called "The Jake" by locals, and it was a total luxury gem of downtown shopping. You could buy from the national chains and the mall would deliver to your house later if you wanted. However, all the leases for the big stores came up for renewal at once and the mall found it hard to continue. Fun fact: the Hard Rock was interested in putting a restaurant in there because of the proximity to the Rock Hall of Fame but the mall was still posh and dynamic and the owner did not want a spinning guitar in front of his building. A new owner took over and he was also a great guy. I am a big supporter of public transportation and the city has done wonderful things, but one of the things that created the biggest challenge to us surviving there was when the city did major construction to create new bus lanes down Euclid Avenue, basically bisecting the city for a long time while it was being done and making it difficult to serve many of our customers. At the same time they took all the street parking along the mall and turned it into a bus lane. Sales were very challenged during those times. But we hung in there until our space was repurposed as part of a new YMCA. But we loved being a part of downtown CLE for 30 years and I still exist in suburbia.

Cleveland used to be a fun city to live and work in. Back in the day, I worked for the NBC affiliate which was located on E.6th St. We'd grab lunch at the Galleria and shop for a new outfit for our night out on the town. After the 11 p.m. newscasts, a bunch of us production folks used to head on over to the Warehouse District. The Spy Bar was one of our favorite hangouts or Fagan's in the Flats. My friends and I would frequent Metropolis and the Aqua club on any given weekend. I don't know what happened after 2000 as I moved abroad to Europe and didn't return until 2012. On the trips I made home in that time period, the Flats were completely closed by 2008 and the Warehouse District was a shadow of its former self. The Galleria, Tower City and Arcade were also on their death beds. What the heck happened while I was gone?
@AK-ey2uy

@@AK-ey2uy Yes. I moved back in 2012 but the Flats and Warehouse District today are nothing like the they were in their heyday. The few clubs that are in existence play crap music. There used to be an eclectic choice of clubs that played house, techno and industrial .. all of which are long gone from Cleveland. No wonder people are still leaving Cleveland to live and work elsewhere.

George Reeves was my favorite Superman as a kid. I was born in 70 and on Sunday mornings the local PBS channel played the old Reeves Superman. I haven't been to Cleveland in probably 15 years. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cleveland Clinic are my memories of it. We had a great room in a beautiful old hotel that had seen better days, but it was extravagant in its day, probably 15-20 foot high ceilings, giant windows looking out on the lake, extravagant woodwork and furniture. It was owned by a national chain so the quality was still good but it was headed downhill. What I remember most of all besides the hall of fame was the smell of decay downtown on just about every street as half the buildings were empty. Also we shopped for hats for my wife in that first or second mall.(My wife was having brain surgery at Cleveland Clinic.) It was pretty active and alive when we shopped there. As for Cleveland Clinic, it may offer some world class health care, but it is also an awful bloated corporate behemoth with quality being crushed by its sheer size.

During the summer in Cleveland, there's a "Slow Roll" group that bicycles throughout Cleveland and environs. Every Monday evening is a different roll. Pretty much every year they cycle through the old League Park neighborhood and we ride past Jerry Siegel's house. There's nothing better on a summer evening - 300 strong this year. Also, the midges were a great distraction to the Yankees in 2007 when they were flying thick on everything on the field. The bug spray they used was useless, and it was hilarious to us Clevelanders.

I wish I would’ve known you were in Cleveland my husband and I would’ve loved to meet you! We know all the weird spots. Al Capone’s private swimming pool and apartment still all original, famous graves (Eliot Ness, THE Chief Wahoo, Chef Boyardee…), 1800’s subway sky bridge, Leif Erikson sculpture, you name it.

I remember my mom taking us shopping at 2 different May Co. stores as kids. George Reeves' Superman is the one zi grew up with but Cris Reeve was played an excellent version.

I can’t speak to today, but as of not too long ago, that food court was still (barely) operational on Browns game days. The galleria is reasonably close to Browns Stadium, and there is lots of foot traffic… Eight days a year.

Something that you'd not be able to see because it no longer exists, but near where the innerbelt highway is currently near Progressive Field (I-90/71) was the site of the Restaurant created by and that birth the canned food of Chef Boyardee (yes, he was a real person). Also, Old Stone Church was used in the scene where Eddy Brock becomes Venom in the Sam Rami Spider-Man 3.

Thanks for sharing and bringing back so many memories from my childhood growing up in the east suburbs of Cleveland in the late 80's and early 90's. We would go downtown often to visit the malls in Terminal Tower or the Galleria. Needless to say they were much busier back then so it's very sad to see all the empty shops and fountains that aren't working anymore.

Very cool video- I know those places very well because growing up before going to baseball games at the old stadium my father would take me to The Arcade and also we would go to the Galleria after games to cool off- get a bite to eat before driving home and my father worked downtown at a point so he told me a lot about the history of things- and I remember going to the Tower City Mall when it opened in the 90s and also remember the Warner Bros store and all the high end stores it had there. Also- sorry the Rays lost- but it was a great game to watch- I saw all 15 innings on TV... great video- I always look forward to seeing where you end up in your videos and I have learned a lot from your videos!

Great tour, Adam and Ryan! I’m so glad you had a chance to explore. My hometown is a suburb of Cleveland. Like Ryan, we also left 10 years ago, but for Houston.

You know what they say about malls. You’ve seen one, you’ve seen a mall. (Feel free to use that dad joke Adam)

I’m still convinced .. these old malls need to be turned into retirement communities! If I had millions I would do it.

Back when I was I kid my grandpa would take me to a comic shop on the third floor in the old arcade. It was called super city comics. He got me the death of superman comic there. The place is still awesome inside.

Adam, Milwaukee Wisconsin would be a good place to visit! Lots of ghost ads on brick buildings, defunct Grand Avenue Mall, Milwaukee Brewers and Summerfest!
