We're exploring the ruins of Duffus Castle, near Elgin in Scotland. A 12th century motte and bailey castle, later rebuilt in stone, the keep collapsed, at which point the castle was abandoned.

Interesting! Duff means Black,as in “Dufftown” as does Douglas and Dougal . All come from Moorish ancestry.eg THE BLACK DOUGLAS!(no it wasn’t his shield that was black,he was!) I think you will find all the old structures in Britain,Europe and the rest of the world were built by the Moors.Originally from America, the real old world. Unfortunately it’s never talked about. That’s a can of worms you could research for a lifetime and still have more to find out. Thank you for the great work on these old castles. I’d love to visit if I got the chance ✌️❤️🙊🙉🙈

Interesting. I don't recognize the term "moray" but Moravia is in Poland. I wonder - you said he was Flemish, but maybe there was a connection to Poland too. Edit - Czech Republic, not Poland anymore. I only know medieval maps, everything is wiggly on the modern map...

Interesting idea. There was a lot of Flemish immigration into Scotland at that time. I had to check the origins of the placename 'Moray' - apparently it is Pictish, and means 'low lying land near to the sea'

Whenever I see these buildings, military buildings, I think how frightened the people must have been who built them. Frightened and desperate, to carry all that weight by hand and put it in place. Took time away from farming and animal care, time with family and community. Can't build better homes or animal shelters. Build us some defenses!

Definitely the gap between rich and poor was far more significant than it is now. Freedoms were certainly in short supply back then
