New Jersey transit runs along the former Pennsylvania Rail Road. The clock tower you see getting off the train was the former Jersey Central Rail Road station.

My daughter and a group of senior high school students were the precursors of this River Trail Project idea during their senior year. They worked along with Chris Bollwage's office and his people. The trail begins at 29:39. That was a great idea for our town!

I used to walk / ride my bike on that trail leading to Bayway😊😊

The railroad from NYC was elevated in the early 1900's, but as you way, another freight line operated there for a while yet. Some of the older genertion of my family lived in Elizabeth, and I know it well. It was always a vibrant shopping area. Go have a cafe con leche and a flan in any of the bakeries on E Jersey Street. Union County has such a mix of Nationalities, and the FOOD from these cultures. Two more stops and you will be in my town, Rahway. Hope you visit soon. I see that you headed toward the port section of Elizabeth. People lived and worked in this area in many industries. My uncle walked to the ferry to Staten Island to cross over to his work at the Proctor and Gamble plant. Another century, another way of life. This is still a town where recent immigrants start their American journey, as it was 100 years ago for some of my family. I see you are doubling back. Keep the tall court building in your sights and head for it to find your way back to the train station. Greenway development is in process as the old industrial areas are repurposed. Older cities need more green areas. The school building you remarked upon was the Sports building for the Thomas Dunn high school of which there are four large buildings with a central park area.
