Most of Kearny is down the hill from where you looked at the mine engine. Kearny was a purpose built town by Kennecott Copper and developer Foxworth-Galbraith to replace the town of Ray which was abandoned add to come to the open pit mine. There are actually two smelters in the Hayden -Winkleman area. The now long decommissioned Kennecott smelter was put in place for Ray Mine. The still functioning Asarco smelter until the 80s did not smelter copper ora from Ray Mine.

A previous coworker of mine grew up there. She's about 65 now. Most all of the people living in that town are her family members. Her family has lived there ever since the town was established. She still loves that town. I'm guessing due to the great memories she has had there.

Some of the area you film that you thought was Hayden was actually the town of San Pedro. Which was the other side of tracks from Hayden so to speak. The money, the management of kennicott copper and some extent ASARCO lived in Hayden back in the day, and people who worked for Kennicott who had brown skin lived in San Pedro. Once Kearny was built the money moved to Kearny. There is also a demarcation if you work for kennicott versus asarco. Kennicott ruled the roost, but kennicott is now long gone.... ASARCO is nothing what it once was .. ASARCO, back when it was actually the American smelting and refining company... Was considered top class, a cut above... But that's long ago as well. It is now owned for many years by grupo Mexico and they're slowly bleeding it dry.

Just beyond the pit (or currently part of…) was the town of Ray. My grandmother was born there. She later moved to Hayden and finally Winkelman.

I only recently discovered your channel and this is the second video I'm enjoying you do a very good job. I looked up Hayden on Wikipedia while I'm watching your video and it looks like the area is so polluted that people are moving out I would love to live in an area like that but I would hate to be poisoned

Back in the day... The building that is now the police department was a Valley National Bank. The desert around Hayden - Winkleman is gorgeous.... Edit, so the building that you thought was a drugstore was indeed a drugstore, was built as such and I can remember when it had a old style "soda fountain" Across the street the building with the awning you though had been a saloon... Restaurant... Indeed it was for many years, called the Bull Pen. I washed a lot of dishes there... The building next to it Casa whatever .. was a western clothing store and JCPenney catalog store. Further down the road and I believe it was one of the buildings burnt down was the Rex movie theater. Had a stage and orchestra pit as well as a balcony it wasn't a Fox or anything of that nature, but it was nice in its day. . By the time I got to go to it.. it was said when you go to the Rex you took two sticks.... One to hold the seat up the other to beat the rats. I could go on and on........ One more little tidbit there by what is now the police station, (Valley National Bank... It had the cool VNB Eagle sign) ... And when you came in Where H-A-Y-D-E-N is spelled out... There was a sign for proclaiming Hayden Arizona voted Life magazines best number one small town in America... 1958. The signs seem really dated by 1970.... I think those signs stayed in place into the mid-80s. Winkelman by the way is much older than Hayden and has a very colorful history.... I remember jumping in the Gila around Winkleman flats, and those who know understand what I'm speaking of... And tubing The gila all the way down to Kearney or if you want to do a full day of it and I mean full day... All the way down to Kelvin / Riverside to that bridge. By the way, I've never heard that called the Kearney bridge before. But things change and perhaps it is now.

Last post.... Maybe. On 77 right outside of Winkleman, just past the slag dump .... And yes you could feel the heat driving by when the slag was dumped... I loved watching it at night as a kid... And still would as an adult... Anyway... As you enter the Gila Canyon, which is beautiful.... if you look up about 200 ft you will see the old 77...... Yep that is the old road hanging on the side of the canyon walls.... Much of it is still intact, for several miles into the canyon .... Up to about Christmas mine ...Well as of 20 years ago it was... including asphalt and road signs... And there's fossils up there.... There's also a half dozen 1930 vintage cars hanging off the side on cables to secure them.... It's a very cool hike that very very few people know about... It is not easy to get to.... Thankfully. Okay and one more thing... Winkleman had a Chevy dealership, and Kearny had a Ford dealership.... Also I'm almost positive that last burned out building kind of close to the what is now the Hayden police department... I'm pretty sure that's the old Rex movie theater.

Hi Charley, I knew I could count on someone that had history there. Thank you for sharing all that wonderful information and history for others to see. I did film Winkleman but wanted to get more and put it into another video to do it justice. The area on the river where tubers are was pretty full. BTW If I called it the Kearny bridge I meant to say Kelvin bridge. 🙂Thanks again and have a great week.

In all the years spent in AZ, i never got to that area. I really like that type of country. Have you been to Bagdad? That's pretty interesting too. Had a friend who was a supervisor in the mine, when we did work down there he'd get us a tour all the way down in the pit. AWESOME. Good job.

My first thought was how a town with near-zero economy affords a police dept with a sizable fleet of newer vehicles, a public library, etc? I'm guessing there's a business district somewhere out of the area shown?
