With the exception of the Blue Bell the pubs you’ve featured are on the tourist trail. For a more local experience I would recommend the Swan at the top of Bishopthorpe Road, the Fox in Holgate ( Osset Brewery ) and the Volunteer on Watson Street, Holgate.

Thank you for your comment. Blue Bell has always been my favourite, but with 365 pubs to choose from I've always been in the ones within the walls, which as you say are in the main tourist areas. I used to drink in the pub next to the Indigo which had a more local vibe, I can't remember what it was called, it had an open mike night that I'd go to, but it is now a restaurant. I'm hoping to get to York in the two weeks before Christmas, I'll try out your three suggestions. Keep 'em coming. Thanks Phil

Thank you for the comment, I really am sorry if I killed the illusion, I can be such a know it all sometimes. It's more likely that some of the streets in Edinburgh did inspire J.K Rowling and I'm working on an Edinburgh video today, so I will make sure I point out some of those to you.

It's likely that the Shambles was used as inspiration for Diagon Alley when producers came to York while making the Harry Potter movies which makes sense as they filmed a part of the York train station for the Philosopher's Stone. I certainly enjoyed looking at the shops in the Shambles as well as the rest of York when I went there last Christmas as it felt like something out of A Christmas Carol. Can't wait to visit again in December.

Ah yes, that is an excellent point about the Shambles inspiring the film makers rather than the author. I didn't know York station was a location for the movie, did it substitute for Kings Cross? Now I have to watch the Philosopher's Stone. Christmas in York, what an excellent idea, I feel another trip to York in the making.

@@mygreygapyear yeah, it was the scene on the bridge Harry and Hagrid crossed that was filmed at the York train station. York is definitely worth visiting at Christmas time as it has such a lovely atmosphere.

I loved this! The hand-drawn map of the walls was such a lovely (and helpful!) touch. Any coffee shop or restaurant recommendations?

Thank you for your kind comments (my very first). From a restaurant point of view, Source on Castlegate stood head and shoulders above everything else, but I fear they have closed. Lots of pubs do "good" food but the chains have really taken over. I was impressed by the restaurant in the Principle Hotel when I stayed there. For food on the go there is "The York Roast Co" which do a Legendary Yorkshire Pudding Roast Dinner wrap. I stumbled across a tiny but lovely little coffee shop just through Bootham Bar if you're walking down High Petergate from the Minster. I've just checked on Google Maps and it has no sign but is called Bar Hashery. I've had good coffee and pastries or avocado on toast a few times.

Thanks. I've just booked my accommodation for September next year. Just wondering whether you'd recommend doing a walking tour or is it one of those places best discovered by yourself? I am interested in history so learning about what I am seeing is important to me, but I'd probably prefer to just wander alone and read information boards if they exist.

Thank you for your comment and question, I've often thought about taking a walking tour but I've never been able to book one that fits in with my weekend, so I think a couple of hours in a walking tour is a good shout and if it appeals to you then you should go for it.
