You haven't just added to the conversation, you've reinvigorated theorycrafting in the fandom and introduced so much clarity to previously muddled plot elements. There are a lot of thing you've said in your videos that made me go, "Duh! That's so obvious!" And yet you were the first person to actually make those connections. Every video of yours that has come out on Inscryption has been a *fandom event*. We all gather around and watch the videos as fast as possible and then discuss your findings and how they make everything fit together - or how they introduced intriguing new ideas nobody had considered before. Trust me when I say your videos on the Mullinsverse are the best-researched, most thorough videos that current fans will be sending to new fans for years to come. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication, Flaw Peacock. Your floppiness will forever be legendary.

17:53 That’s the neat part: they didn’t. Originally, the community lucked into the correct answer by looking at the roof of Leshy’s cabin in Act 2. The method was wrong, but by sheer dumb luck, the answer was right. It wasn’t until Flemmbons did some digging and asked Mullins about that step that he went in and found the answer the “correct” way-MONTHS after the ARG had been solved.

It wasn't exactly dumb luck- well I mean it IS, it's just that Mullins likes call-backs and made it so both solutions reference Hopeless Soul's password: 2734. The same numbers also appeared in the Hex apparently

I just understood something. Last Kaycee's entry was number 12. But what is 13th arkana? Death! Now let's see other entries. Entry #1 (The Magician) - Angler catches old_data and walks even though there is no such animation. The Magician represents "ability to cultivate and fulfill potential" Entry #2 (The High Priestess) - Everything went 3D. The High Priestess represents "secrets, mystery, the future yet unrevealed" Entry #3 (The Empress) - Kaycee's playing new game and poking around. The Empress represents "fruitfulness, action, initiative; also doubt, ignorance" Entry #4 (The Emperor) - Kaycee sees Leshy (in a Woodcarver's mask) talking about old_data. Also she found Kaminski's logs. The Emperor represents "authority, establishment, a father figure" Entry #5 (The Hierophant) - Kaycee's addicted to this version. She's planning to make a mod. The Hierophant represents "alliance, servitude, inspiration" Entry #6 (The Lovers) - Leshy has got Kaycee Hobbes' ghoul skull in his cabin. Kaycee wants to "hack" getting up the table in game. The Lovers represents "attraction, love, trial overcome" Entry #7 (The Chariot) - Kaycee discovers "a doomsday machine" after digging a little bit. The Chariot represents "war, vengeance, trouble" Entry #8 (Strength) - Kaycee leaves her apartment as an exception. She ripes some foil and loses to some guy. Strength represents "action, courage, also success" Entry #9 (The Hermir) - Kaycee finds out what Leshy did to PO3. She hands this card back to Leshy. The Hermit represents "prudence, circumspection, also treason, corruption" Entry #10 (Wheel of Fortune) - Kaycee nearly throws out the disk. She's uncertain about nature of KC. Wheel of Fortune represents "element of change" Entry #11 (Justice) - Kaycee thinks nobody will play this version of game but then she dreams about opposite (which is true 'cause we are playing this mod). Justice represents "equity, rightness, triumph of the deserving side" Entry #12 (The Hanged Man) - Kaycee buries this disk within a box somewhere. She's planning to burn it. The Hanged Man represents "wisdom, circumspection, intuition, also trials, sacrifice" Now 13th arkana Death represents "end, mortality, destruction, corruption". These 13 arkanas interpretations coincide with Kaycee's story in this game. Is this valid connection?

At 41:00 I think you're making one noticeable mistake. He's not asking for a *copy* of super weasel kid, he's asking for a "clone", as in a quick rip off. Like how all FPS games used to be "DOOM Clones", just a quick knockoff that can be done inside of a month or two. So, this could theoretically have been written by Kaminski like a week after the original SWK came out. Edit: Forgot the last sentence.
@DreamPrinnySquad
@DreamPrinnySquad 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, given the tone and context it's said in and the implied massive popularity of SWK I'm thinking this is basically Kaminski saying "why the hell do you have to put all this effort in? just knock out a super mario bros clone or something and call it a day this isn't even a real game"
@ChestersonJack
@ChestersonJack 2 ай бұрын
Yes, Kaminksi doesn't say 09, but FP draws that conclusions and then later (like at 1:13:47) misremembers into thinking the character said 09 specifically. Just a minor error, and certainly wouldn't fix the timeline at the timestamp I mentioned bc it's still post Luke's KZbin career starting, but for dating Kam's message mentioning SWK it's worth considering.

You might have pointed this out, but I notice that nearly all of the holders of the karnoffel cards\code were shot in the head, and I am including Kaycee in this example. Hitler shot himself in the head, big ear had a gun to his head, Kaycee’s ghoul in inscryption has an icicle in her head, and getting killed off can be referred to as “getting iced” along with the game only saying Kaycee died from fire related injuries. Getting shot in the middle of a fire could probably be considered fire related. And of course, Luke was shot in the head by Amanda.

To note about Deathcards, there are actually more than four premade deathcards. There's Kaycee, Kaminski, Louis, and Reginald, the ones we're familiar with, but did you know that after dying enough times in Act 1, you can start to see deathcard choice nodes on the map? They give you a choice of deathcards to take into your deck. However, the game doesn't want to give you duplicate deathcards- so what would happen if you somehow had every single vanilla and custom deathcard in your deck, and then visited a deathcard node which ought to have nothing left to give you? The game actually has a fallback for this, probably as more of an error catch than anything, but it gives you a deathcard named 'Luke Carder', which is a 4/4 with no sigils and no cost. This is exceedingly difficult to do, since it requires a lot of luck but it is still theoretically possible without save editing if you get lucky enough. This would mean that a deathcard for Luke exists somewhere in inscryption before he even boots the game, perhaps the game again predicting the future, and acting as a harbinger of his eventual fate? Kaycee's mod also has it's own cast of deathcards designed to fill out the roster of Leshy's second phase. They're actually all shoutouts to people who worked on Inscryption, like a mini inbuilt credits list. - Berke 2/1 Frozen Away, Guardian | Berke Oğuz Yılmaz is one of Daniel's discord moderators, and also did Turkish localisation for Inscryption. - Cody 3/1 Loose Tail, Burrower | Cody Reader is credited as doing Low Poly 3D art for Inscryption. - David 2/4 Hefty, Sharp Quills | David Hagemann is the main 3D artist for Inscryption. - Sean 1/6 Mighty Leap, Touch of Death | Sean Karemaker did 3D environment work for Inscryption, and also made Goobert's model. - Tamara 2/3 Rampager, Loose Tail | Tamara Orlova did more 3D environments for Inscryption. - Jonah 2/5 Bees Within, Sharp Quills | Jonah Senzel is the composer and sound designer for Inscryption. - Tahnee 1/3 Trifurcated Strike | Tahnee Langshaw is the actress who portrays Amanda. - Kevin 2/3 Rampager, Loose Tail | Kevin Saxby is the actor who portrays Luke Carder. - Daniel 2/2 Double Strike | This is probably Daniel Mullins' personal deathcard if I had to guess, though it might also belong to Daniel Langhjelm, who did 3D environment art for the game. Interestingly, the Kaycee deathcard CANNOT show up in Leshy's fight in Kaycee's mod, but Louis, Reginald, and Kaminski can.

It wouldn't necessarily need to be in the game before he starts playing. If you get to the point where that can happen then it would follow that Luke has almost certainly played and gotten his picture taken many times, creating several images of him that could be consolidated into a card with his name on it that represents his soul captured in full.

maybe since the game we are playing already happen and what we are playing is the kamcorder copy the luke card is like a reference that yes luke is already dead by the time we are playing the game instead of it being thing the game did on its own like a foreshadowing for the player, think about it the game we are playing is the version p03 uploaded so yeah it makes sense that luke would be dead since is clear we is gonna die after learning the data

The reveal that P03 actually succeeded in uploading Inscryption and potentially saved those on the disk makes me almost cry. It's like thinking a friend is dead or a pet is missing, and then you're given a bit of hope that they might be okay. I'm utterly ashamed of how much this game gets me emotionally. The fact that P03's evil scheme that we try to stop might be the only reason that anyone survives the deletion process. It's poetic, in a way. Makes me wish I could apologise to this fictional character. Our stoat stands unopposed.

I don't think you failed. I think you explained the writing and the underlying themes of the narrative very well. Like you said, this was more than 1 person could ever do alone, but what you've done is something I've seen few, if any, youtubers do. It's like you said in one of the previous videos, most fans 'get' the story but don't understand all the underlying themes and finer details. You brought those themes to light for all of us to enjoy and appreciate, and for that I think these videos qualify as a huge success. I'm glad you are still proud of this, you should be because it's amazing. I can't wait to see what you decide to cover next.

The floppy disk (flaw peadisk?) timeline makes perfect sense to me: in the logs, it clearly sounds to me like the development of inscryption is something that happened a while ago ("they never told us that"..etc.) I think Kaycee just found one of the old disks they used sitting around the office one day (maybe in Natas's office!) and took it home to mess with for nostalgia... and got a big surprise.

I disagree. Entry #1 clearly says that Kaycee was *working* late and testing the *latest build* of Inscryption, which indicates that at least this entry is happening during development. Then in entry #12 Kaminski recalls the disks, but I doubt that he waited from floppy disk era to 2010-ish era to recall them, it can't have been that long. And don't forget that Kaminski mentions Super Weasel Kid while lamenting about how slow Inscryption is being developped. In conclusion, it seems the development of Inscryption was definitely during the 2010s
@StonedHunter
@StonedHunter 3 ай бұрын
The idea I got was that they got the box of all blank floppy disks, and knew they needed to bury the KC so decided to put the game on all the floppy disks to cover their bases and use the testing to find the corrupted disk and ideally take it out of production and secure it or destroy it. But they weren't expecting Kaycee to do what she did.
@Cooe.
@Cooe. 3 ай бұрын
This is EXPLICITLY directly contradicted multiple times as a poster above me has made clear. Inscryption was developed in the modern era by a team Kaycee was on. That's undebatable. The use of floppy disks has to be for some other reason than "the game was actually developed in the 90's", because it just simply wasn't. 🤷

34:30 Wait, your right. Each scribes form of inscryption does represent how the data was carried. It was first inked onto paper (the cards), they took a photo of them, they inscribed them onto a disk, then gamefuna (Kaycee and co) build a game on top of it which is how Magnificus’ ability works, he try’s to remove the old sigils, if any (what lies at the surface) and then paints his own on top of the card (interestingly, Magnificus never gained hegemony and Inscryption was never fully completed)

As a polish person i was amazed at the messages in polish, and ever more amazed by your ability to actually separate polish from russian accent, which half of the world has a hard time doing. Pieprzony Peacock! But also, as a "floppy" observation - it did strike me that the messages were possible to be written in cyryllic, but the polish letters were missing, making these messages hard to read even for a polish speaker - ex. "Nie udao mi si zama tego szyfrowania" vs "Nie udało mi się złamać tego szyfrowania" how it should be written. Maybe the font simply didn't support them (as it often happens), but it would be really funny if it had a deeper meaning to it. maybe even connected to Kamiński not being able to crack the code? - notice, the Kamiński surname is used throughout the game in its simplified form ń=n but it wasn't used in the messages, instead the letters were missing.

I recall in the last video that you said you "didn't think you did a good job" on the first two parts of Inscryption. I just wanted to give my two cents. The word "essay" is a transformation of the French "Essai", which translates to "an attempt". The 16th century philosopher Michel de Montaigne was the pioneer of this kind of writing, and his works reflected the nature of "an attempt" - they were insightful, humorous, and challenging, but never all-encompassing. His essais were meant to add to the discourse, but not completely cover every nook and cranny of a subject. I think your video essays are in the same spirit as Montaigne's essais. You've done your research, but you're not completely in-the-know, so you make "an attempt". And you add to the discourse of the game while being entertaining. I couldn't ask for more from a video essay, and I think Montaigne would approve. ❤ Btw you should check out his book "Essais" - I have a hunch you'd both get a kick out of it and really like the content.

I feel like Inscryption and Mullen’s work in general is less about solving/correctly identifying the story and more about talking about the things you’ve discovered. In that sense I don’t believe you CAN fail. Although I was vaguely aware of Inscryption and pony island as games, I’ve never cared even close to as much as I did thanks to your videos, nor do I think I would have even enjoyed them very much if they weren’t presented so floppy. The way you present information and stitch stories and ideas together, as well as your wide net of knowledge and research really does justice to such an incredible series, and I don’t believe anyone could have told this story quite like you. Every time you launch the game, restart, reload, the characters and the story are reset. Even Luke. The Bone Lord, however, seems... different. Unrestrained by this simulated causality. Perhaps, this is the power of the OLD_DATA. Something that remains throughout all the iterations of the game and maybe even the universe outside. The world itself could be reset, but the old data remembers what lies ahead.

I think all of the various copies of Inscryption being worked on would have sentient characters, being Game Works-based (references to the triangle and Irving,) we just see Kaycee notice it because it's only her copy that has the OLD DATA, which would cause the strange behavior that Kaycee would observe. I imagine it's something of a Toy Story situation; as long as nothing triggers a notable lifting of the veil, like the Legendaria stream or the OLD DATA interactions, then the only hints of characters actually being alive is just that they just hit the uncanny valley of depth and realism- "they sometimes seem to be in real pain," "their reactions seem strangely real." It's a minor quibble, I just don't think the OLD DATA is the source of their sentience, given that we know they're build on the Game Works framework, just that they're as impacted by the strange pull of the OLD DATA and the Code as the humans are- it's the same mirror/rorrim microcosm/macrocosm you were pointing out. Whatever's on that disk affects people the same, whether they're made of flesh or of code.

17:44 Fun fact: the ARG solvers didn't! What they did was use the mirror/rorrim clue in conjunction with the F!OOR clue to try and use the broken slats in the roof of Leshy's cabin in act 2 with the safe code. It's an absolute miracle that worked. The true solution wasn't found until Flemmonade asked Daniel Mullins and got some hints about looking at the assets. The big problem is, Daniel made it clear that datamining the game wasn't required for the ARG, and discouraged it since they could just datamine the solution then. Asset Studio was considered to be too close by most players.

Hey Hey! Just trying to contribute here, and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I might have picked up a fact that backs up your theory at 1:00:57 about the old data giving the gameworks it's ability to create sentient characters. From a previous video I watched which took a shot at the Mullinsverse's ARG, it was stated that in his time hiding in Russia, Barry stayed at his son's/daughter's (sorry, can't quiet remember) house, who was currently living with their lover aswell as their young child: Lionell Snill. And being the grandpa he is, Barry spend some time with Lionell, in which a fracture of the old data got onto young Lionell's PC, which later resurfaced as the litteral hex artifact which later opens the portal for root beer Regy to snuff Lionell. In that video it was also stated that this fracture of the old data was the reason Lionell turned out so bitter, corrupt and as kind of an arse, the old data's corrupting presence having caught the young developer in it's vile clutches like so many others. As a side note, I have not a single clue if any of theese facts were proven, I could be entirely wrong and as stated earlier please correct me if I made the midtake here. No matter what, I wish everyone reading this a nice day/night/pancake, and if Peacock is reading this I just want to express my gratitude for your amazing work and effort that flows into your videos, every time I see a notifacation of a new video from the floppy king it brightens my day. It’s strange that Barry’s US ID is from the Department of Defense, and not some three letter agency. Someone in espionage would work for the CIA, who are not a part of the DoD. Either Mullins overlooked this (but I doubt Mullins would miss something so obvious) or Barry is less truthful than we think. He could also just be a former soldier or DIA agent who just switched departments, or some other mundane answer, but if that were the case, we should have been given some evidence of it. In addition, Kaycee saying that the idea of hiding the data in a box full of floppy disks is an idea born from Barry’s stress in the situation lends credence to the idea that Barry isn’t who we think he is, potentially being more of a grifter/con man who stumbled into something larger than himself. It would also explain why Kaycee can’t find Barry in the US, because the name is fake. That’s a little nutty, but food for thought.

1:29:15 I think it's interesting how, while Inscryption could be used to create something seemingly good and fun (the Leshy and P-03 versions of the game), it isn't a completely positive experience for everyone. In Leshy's game, the other Scrybes lose their autonomy and end up as cards to be sacrificed and killed over and over. And when P-03 takes control, while the Scrybes aren't completely taken out of the picture, they can't act freely. It's almost kind of like they're trapped in a surveillance state, free to exist until they stepnoit of line so they have to rely on the Player to act. It almost reminds me of how certain governments behave when they gain power in the real world. Stronger weapons and military means a bigger threat to dissenters, better technology can lead to dystopian surveillance states. One person's paradise could be someone else's living hell. And it also kinda mirrors real world governments getting more power and sliding closer to facism but it's too early in the morning for me to think too much on that.

oh wow that was quick. EDIT: The reason why the back to beginning cipher got solved was likely because they thought of the demo, checked the page, and saw it got updated on the literal same day as inscryption released with seemingly no actual changes.

1:12:10 Quick note, if it helps remove some confusion, that camcorder guy may not be Luke. It's uncommon, but some Card Game Players (particularly those whom want to become the best) record games that they play in smaller events, then review the footage later. It used to be more common before the start of the pandemic, but it could explain the discrepancy in that the log draws attention to the parallels between Kaycee and Luke. Theirs this kind of unwritten rule of game design and especially electronic games where devs and players are at odds as Creators and Destroyers. If a Dev team can make a mechanic, a player will figure out how to use that mechanic to beat the game faster than the old Domino's delivery motto.

Thank you, Mr. Peacock. Even if your fears are true and you just reiterated what has already been discovered, the worst that could happen is you spread the lore and story of these games to people who didn’t already know or people who didn’t have the whole story. I think that in itself was worth the effort and many many hours you put into this project :)

The most striking theme is that people are much more than they seem. Leshy is monstrous and beastly, yet careful in his craftsmanship. Po3 is bitter, yet hides sweeter, more excitable points. Lionel is a terrible person, yet he really, truthfully, regrets what he did to Reggie. Lucifer is, in numerous ways, what he seems, but under all his demonic trappings, beyond his pride, he is deeply insecure about himself and how others see his work. So many characters aren't who they say they are. They even give Magnificous, as he seems to have something going on with his connection to Goobert.

Regarding the idea that you failed, or even that you could have failed, at explaining Inscryption: I don’t think that’s what the appeal of your work is. This channel is about the exploration, not the explanation. We want to see you floppily explore ideas and go down rabbit holes of thought, sometimes coming up with concise theories and other times wiping them away. The fun of it all is the journey.

I've loved this series, from Pony Island all the way to here. If it weren't for you I never would have pulled Inscryption out of an unused Steam folder and actually played through the whole thing. That was a great ride, and having these videos to see all the things I missed only made it all even better. With regards to the timeline of the OLD_DATA being used for the Gameworks, there *is* quite a large amount of time the disk existed and was unaccounted for. It was created and shipped out while the USSR was still around, and it wasn't until decades later that Kaycee tested it while making Inscryption. Who was holding onto it all that time? How did GameFuna find out about it and suddenly decide to make a game overtop of it in the late '00s? Perhaps GameFuna had access to this data for some time and used it to develop the Gameworks. Perhaps eventually Lou Natas wanted to take things further, create something more powerful, and so instead of just creating games using a suite based on the OLD_DATA's power he wanted to see what could be done with a game built atop the OLD_DATA itself. Certainly, what Leshy and Poe are able to accomplish within their own game is far beyond anything we see in The Hex, barring the final ritual which requires the player's help. It's quite a floppy theory, but it does help tie together some of the gaps in the history.

Hey Peacock! I just wanted to say, thank you. It was my birthday on the 20th and ever since I found your channel and listened thru all your videos I have been so hyped for this series! I had to travel up to up to Sacramento (to celebrate my 21st 🎉) which took me 7~ hours there and then another 7 back and I listened to this the whole way. I think it was fantastic. The way you describe your tactics and the games plot had me captivated even though my eyes were fixed firmly on the road (I drove safely!) I’ve read up on the lore of the game and played a bit of it but none of it has been as enlightening as listening to your series not only on this game, but Pony Island and The Hex too. For me, I don’t think you necessarily failed as in, you alone didn’t need to come up with all the answers to the ciphers and the collection of data. You put it into a wonderfully thought out play-through-like condensed story that was amazing to listen through. That is TRULY fantastic. You may be flawed, but who isn’t? Doesn’t mean ya failed. ❤ Much love!

Oh man, you going over the timeline actually solidified the four methods of inscryption as featured in the game translated into the passing on of the Karnoffel Code. The activation(?) sequence is first saved as the ordering of a deck of cards- of which the original art would have first been Painted, before being printed onto the cards; the cards are found by the Russians, and they take a Photograph of not only the cards, but where they have hidden them (and by extension the Karnoffel Code); the code is then copied onto a floppy Disk and sent stateside, being subject to the whole hazy subterfuge via Gamefuna; and finally, one last furtive smuggling of the Karnoffel Code back underground, its whereabouts Penned onto a skeleton card. Floppy? Maybe. But it feels good in the brain.

From someone who didn’t even play the games myself, you certainly did a great job at explaining it! There might be some flaws when looking at it from the perspective of someone who was actively digging into the game. But if you watch these videos with no context at all, you did a great job at explaining things and keeping everything concise, while letting us stew in the information that you will explain later. Good job!
