Exploring Istanbul's İstiklal street in summer,6 July 2024

#Taksim Square (Taksim Meydanı in Turkish) is one of the most famous public squares in #Istanbul. Located on the European side of the city, it is a major commercial and tourist hub. The square is named after the historical water distribution system (taksim) that used to be located there.
Taksim Square is home to the Monument of the Republic, which was erected in 1928 to commemorate the foundation of the Turkish Republic. The square is surrounded by hotels, shopping malls, theaters, and restaurants, making it a lively gathering place for both locals and visitors. It is also the site of many political rallies and demonstrations due to its central location.
Leading directly off of Taksim Square is the famous İstiklal Street (İstiklal Caddesi), a long pedestrian avenue that is considered the heart of modern Istanbul. This bustling street is lined with historical buildings, churches, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Throngs of people stroll up and down İstiklal at all hours, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
The nostalgic red historic tram runs the length of İstiklal Street, adding to its old-world charm. Side streets branching off of İstiklal lead to more intimate neighborhoods with local specialty shops and restaurants. Overall, Taksim Square and İstiklal Street encapsulate the energy, history, and cosmopolitan character of Istanbul.
